Accompanied by the chilling laughter of the woman before me, a flash of lightning illuminated the room as bright as day, followed closely by a loud clap of thunder.
In that moment of illumination, I could clearly see that this was no youthful maiden; she was unmistakably an old hag. Her hair was completely white, her cheeks sunken in like a withered corpse. The lightning and thunder made her appear even more sinister.
"Who are you?!" I asked, stepping back a few paces alongside Yao Long.
The old hag coughed twice and replied with a smile, "Who I am is not important. What matters is that you will soon become my bait... Come in!"
At her command, hurried footsteps echoed from the entrance as several men rushed inside. Leading them were the village chief and the bearded man we had seen earlier.
As soon as they entered, they surrounded us, their faces twisted into menacing expressions. "Are they the ones who harmed our brother?!" the bearded man growled.
"It shouldn't be them, but they possess something I want..." the old hag said, slowly approaching us with an extremely eerie expression on her face.
Seeing this, Yao Long angrily drew his Azure Spirit, pulling back the bowstring and aiming it at the advancing old hag. "I should have killed you directly!" he shouted, and in an instant, a crimson arrow formed on the bow, its tip aimed at the old hag's forehead.
Yet the old hag showed no fear; she continued to inch closer to Yao Long. "Young man, there's no need to be so angry. Let's talk nicely..."
Before she could finish her sentence, Yao Long bellowed, "Screw you! Who wants to talk nicely with you?!" Just as his words fell, he suddenly released the bowstring, sending the crimson arrow flying toward the old hag.
In a split second, just as the arrow was about to strike her head, a shadow darted past her and shattered Yao Long's arrow into pieces.
I couldn't help but be astonished. To block a shot from such a short distance—what could it be? I looked around to see what had intercepted the arrow.
But upon closer inspection, I realized that none of the men had moved; instead, a black segmented object was swaying behind the old hag.
Focusing intently, I discovered it was clearly a scorpion's claw.
"Stop your futile struggles. Hand over your Worm King willingly, and perhaps I'll consider sparing your lives..." the old hag said smugly.
"Worm King? Is that what she wants from Yao Long?" I thought to myself before addressing the old hag. "I don't know what your Worm King is, but since you are using us like this, don't blame me for being rude!"
I swiftly drew Jiang Ling and, without hesitation, plunged it directly into my chest. In an instant, time froze, and everything around me came to a standstill.
"What is it this time?" the Void Spirit within me asked impatiently.
I didn’t respond but instead channeled the power of the Void Spirit into the sword. Then, I pulled the sword from my chest and gathered strength in my legs. With a swift motion, I swung Jiang Ling, cutting down the men who had surrounded us like leaves swept away by the wind. During this time, I felt no mercy.
Just as I was about to strike at the Old Hag, an intense sense of foreboding washed over me. At the same moment, I heard the voice of the Void Spirit: "Don't attack her! She is filled with poison; if you recklessly engage her, you'll be infected by her deadly venom!"
Hearing this, I quickly withdrew. The moment I stepped back, time resumed, and the heads of those men fell to the ground.
Seeing this, Yao Long was not to be outdone. He nocked several arrows with Azure Spirit and shot them toward the Old Hag.
However, before the arrows could reach her, they were blocked one by one by the Scorpion Claw that she had summoned, causing no harm whatsoever. The Old Hag's fury ignited as she witnessed her subordinates fall in an instant.
With a fierce expression, she shouted at us, "Well then, if you refuse my hospitality, you’ve brought this upon yourselves!" With that, she let out a strange cry and lunged at us with her pincers raised.
Realizing her ferocity and speed made her difficult to counter, I gathered my strength in my legs and quickly grabbed Yao Long, making a dash out of the house.
As soon as we exited, I steadied myself and turned back to unleash several dark Slash Marks into the room. With too much force behind my strike, I shattered what was already a dilapidated building into pieces.
A thunderclap echoed through the air, illuminating everything around us. At that moment, I saw that the house had completely collapsed, burying the Old Hag beneath the rubble.
"It seems she was wary of the Worm King's power; that's why she tried to deceive us and planned to kill us through treachery. Thankfully we were on guard..."
I couldn't help but sigh. Before I could finish my thought, Yao Long suddenly unleashed the power of Void Spirit, enveloping his bow in azure flames. He said sternly, "Don't let your guard down; she’s definitely not dead yet!"
No sooner had he spoken than a long Scorpion Tail emerged from the debris, its tip bearing a claw much larger than a human head.
Seeing this, Yao Long continued to gather power on his bow for a single decisive shot against the Old Hag. I couldn’t afford to be careless either; however, since I couldn't approach her directly for an attack, I concentrated my energy on my sword. Suddenly, a red You Long emerged from the hilt of my sword and began to swirl around me incessantly.
"Now!" Yao Long suddenly shouted, releasing a barrage of arrows infused with Phantom Power. In an instant, a dazzling blue light shot forward, streaking through the air like a meteor.
Hearing the call, I quickly channeled the power from my sword into a massive Slash Mark, merging it with Yao Long's arrows as they flew toward the extending Scorpion Tail.
At that moment, a loud bang echoed from the distant ruins as the Old Hag rose from the rubble. Simultaneously, our combined attack was almost upon her, leaving her no chance to evade.
Seeing this, the Old Hag hurriedly wrapped herself with her Scorpion Tail, encasing herself completely. Suddenly, there was a tremendous explosion as a black and blue beam of light erupted from her position, sending debris flying and dust swirling around.
The force of the blast was overwhelming, and both Yao Long and I were thrown back by the shockwave.
After a moment, regaining my footing, I looked at the cloud of dust and said, "She should be dead now..."
But before I could finish my sentence, a dark claw emerged from the smoke, charging straight toward Yao Long and me...
