Seeing this, Haoyang instinctively lowered his head to glance at the waiter by his feet, who was pleading desperately with him. Red, tender shoots were piercing through the skin on his face, growing out from within him.
Haoyang was startled. The waiter happened to be holding onto his injured foot, and the pain combined with the sight of the waiter’s face covered in plant sprouts made him act without thinking. He lifted his leg and kicked the waiter away.
The waiter was sent flying by Haoyang's kick, crashing into the wall with a dull thud. Moments later, he let out a "wow" as he spewed a large amount of blood from his mouth.
Along with the blood, numerous red fireflies flew out from his mouth.
"What is happening? Why are those bugs coming out of his mouth?!" Li Zhisheng exclaimed, charging up a Black Sphere in his hand while keeping his eyes fixed on the red dots dancing in the air. I had already drawn Jiang Ling, ready to attack at any moment.
"Could these bugs spread some kind of disease?!" I said cautiously.
At that moment, Haoyang nervously took a few steps back and said, "If they can spread disease, then I must have encountered those bugs before. By all logic, I should have been infected already. But why am I fine?"
As soon as he finished speaking, the Blood-colored Fireflies that had flown out from the waiter suddenly surged toward us as if they had gone mad.
"Haoyang, watch out!" Li Zhisheng shouted as he pushed Haoyang aside and hurled the Black Sphere at the swarm of fireflies.
There was a loud explosion, and black smoke filled the area. It seemed that many of the fireflies were killed by this attack, while the remaining ones hesitated to approach due to the ominous smoke.
Although Li Zhisheng's strike had temporarily halted the Blood-colored Fireflies, it was not a long-term solution. The waiter lying on the ground was already dead, yet more Blood-colored Fireflies continued to pour out of his mouth, gathering in increasing numbers in mid-air.
Seeing that the swarm of Blood-colored Fireflies was about to fill the entire room, I urgently grabbed Haoyang and Li Zhisheng by their clothes. "We can't stay here any longer; we need to leave now!"
Without hesitation, I led them swiftly out of the inn filled with Blood-colored Fireflies. Looking back one last time, I saw countless bugs swirling inside, illuminating the entire room in a crimson glow.
As we fled, those bugs followed closely behind us. Just then, Li Zhisheng acted quickly again, charging up another Black Sphere and turning around to launch an attack that pushed back the pursuing fireflies once more.
Taking advantage of the moment, we quickened our pace and rushed onto the main road of the town. Just then, we were stunned by the sight before us. The sky, which had previously been dotted with a few red lights, was now completely covered, resembling a massive glowing red dome that enveloped the town. Countless Blood-colored Fireflies were continuously pouring out from every household, gathering in the air.
"Is this what the legendary net of the underworld looks like?" Li Zhisheng muttered, staring blankly at the sky.
"At a time like this, you still have the mood to joke..." Before I could finish my sentence, I saw those fireflies surge towards us like a wave of blood.
In that moment, even I panicked. There were so many Blood-colored Fireflies that we had nowhere to hide. Seeing this, I gritted my teeth, reversed the blade of my sword, aimed it at my chest, and glared fiercely: "Damn it, it seems we have no choice but to fight!"
With that, I plunged Jiang Ling into my chest. In an instant, time froze, and all the fireflies halted mid-air.
"What is this..." The Void Spirit within me was also taken aback by the scene before us, but I paid no attention to him. Instead, I unleashed the power within me. Suddenly, a black halo emerged beneath my feet, pulsating on the ground, and a semi-circular black translucent shield formed around me.
Taking advantage of the time freeze not yet dissipating, I leaped up and charged towards those red fireflies. Just as they were mere inches away from me, I gathered all my strength and infused it into Jiang Ling. Then, with both hands gripping the sword tightly, I swung it fiercely.
At that moment when I swung my sword, time resumed. The Jiang Ling in my hand shot forward with a surge of intense black energy, creating an unprecedentedly large Slash Mark.
In an instant, that Slash Mark streaked across the sky like Black Lightning, clearing away half of the Blood-colored Fireflies that had been hovering above.
Seeing this scene below, Haoyang was momentarily dumbfounded. He widened his eyes and couldn't help but exclaim, "What incredible power..."
But before he could finish his sentence, I realized that I had exerted too much force in that strike and was unable to maintain my momentum quickly enough. The remaining half of the fireflies suddenly turned towards me and charged forward.
At that moment, I was sideways facing those fireflies. As they approached me directly, I found myself completely defenseless.
In this critical moment, a massive Black Sphere brushed past me closely and annihilated all the Blood-colored Fireflies that were about to make contact with me. Immediately after, that Black Sphere soared into the sky and exploded with a deafening roar about a hundred meters away from me.
A powerful shockwave surged towards me before I could react, knocking me down from the air and crashing heavily onto the ground.
"Are you okay?" Li Zhisheng rushed over to me after I fell, reaching out to help me up with a concerned expression.
Hearing this, I couldn't contain my anger and retorted, "Damn it, are you trying to take me down with you?!"
But Li Zhisheng replied seriously, "If I didn't do this, those bugs would have taken you down."
At that moment, I noticed Haoyang standing nearby, seemingly startled by the display of power from both me and Li Zhisheng. He stood there with his mouth agape, looking somewhat dazed.
I steadied myself, brushed off the dirt from my clothes, and walked over to Haoyang alongside Li Zhisheng. I patted him on the shoulder and said, "Hey, stop spacing out! We need to move; if we keep wasting time like this, we might exhaust our energy."
However, Haoyang remained unresponsive, still standing there with a blank expression.
Seeing this, a sense of dread washed over me. At the same time, Li Zhisheng seemed to notice something unusual as well. He gasped and took a few steps back, pointing at Haoyang's exposed arm. "Look, doesn't he have that kind of plant growing on his hand too..."
