"Did you hear that sound?" Li Zhisheng whispered, furrowing his brow.
"Yes, I heard it too..." I replied. "It seems like someone is crying, and it sounds like it's coming from the kitchen." With that, I tiptoed toward the kitchen.
At that moment, the large pot in the kitchen was still boiling, bubbles occasionally bursting through the lid. There was a narrow door on one side of the stove, piled high with firewood, so much so that I hadn't noticed it when I first entered.
As we approached the door, the sound of sobbing seemed to grow closer. "It seems to be right behind that door." I cautiously stepped forward, and just as I was about to touch the doorknob, the wooden door suddenly swung open.
I jumped back in surprise and stumbled into Li Zhisheng behind me. "What are you doing here..." I turned to see that the person who had opened the door was the old man I had been looking for, followed by a middle-aged woman. Both of them had slightly red eyes, and their voices carried a nasal tone, as if they had just been crying.
"I..." In my panic, I stumbled over my words, feeling as if I had been caught stealing. But then I realized I hadn’t done anything wrong; there was no reason to be alarmed. I quickly composed myself and said, "I was looking for you to ask something. When I saw you weren't here, I searched around for a bit and then heard the crying, so I came to check..."
"I see, sorry for making you laugh at us..." The old man said as he and the middle-aged woman wiped away their tears and glanced at the boiling pot on the stove. "Dinner is ready; if you have any questions, you can ask while eating."
I wanted to refuse, but my stomach betrayed me with a loud growl. Li Zhisheng behind me also whispered while holding his stomach, "It seems we really haven't eaten anything."
Feeling embarrassed, I said, "I'm truly sorry for misunderstanding you earlier. Now I'm here eating your food; this is really..." With that, I hurried forward to help.
After some bustling around, we brought a steaming pot of mixed vegetables to the table. After eating a bit, I asked the old man about the situation in the neighboring village.
The old man told us that news about the Blood Farmer had indeed spread from that village nearby, which was not far from here—only about half an hour's walk.
After hearing this, I wanted to head straight to that village with Li Zhisheng. However, just as we were preparing to leave, the middle-aged woman called out meaningfully to us. "Buddy, it's not safe here at night, especially recently with all that's been happening with the Blood Farmer. If you get caught, we won't be able to save you..."
Meanwhile, the old man quietly muttered to himself as he cleared away the dishes from the table. "They don't need us to save them..."
Despite his loud voice, I still heard him. From his tone, I sensed that he seemed to already know we were not ordinary people.
I didn't say much in response; I simply thanked them and instructed Li Zhisheng to stay behind and watch over Haoyang. After that, I borrowed a piece of clothing from the old man and set out alone.
At that moment, darkness had fallen, and there were no streetlights along the roadside. Only the faint flicker of candlelight from the Thatch House nearby provided some illumination. Although the light was weak, it was enough for me to see the path ahead.
I followed the main road through the village and soon left it behind. Looking up, I saw that the sky was overcast; there were no stars, and even the moon was completely hidden by clouds.
Following the direction given by the old man, I walked for about half an hour before another village appeared before me. From a distance, I could see numerous Blood-colored Fireflies swirling around the village. The thatched houses within no longer emitted warm candlelight but glowed with a blood-red hue.
Surrounded by those Blood-colored Fireflies, the entire village was shrouded in a ghastly crimson light, creating a terrifying atmosphere. Even from afar, I could feel waves of chill emanating from that village.
At that moment, the Blood-colored Fireflies that had been hovering above the village suddenly began to move. They surged toward me like a swarm of bees emerging from their hive.
Seeing this, I heightened my vigilance, gripping Jiang Ling tightly and preparing for whatever might happen next. The fireflies flew faster and faster until they were less than a hundred meters away from me.
A surge of alarm shot through me as I considered summoning the Void Spirit to battle those damned insects. However, as they approached, they did not lower their altitude but maintained their height, buzzing loudly as they zipped past my head toward the village behind me.
"This is bad; their target isn't me but that village!" Without hesitation, I plunged Jiang Ling into my chest.
In an instant, time seemed to freeze. The countless Blood-colored Fireflies above formed a red galaxy. Although this sight was breathtaking, I had no time to admire such a horrifying beauty.
"Damn bugs!" I suddenly roared in anger, yanking Jiang Ling out and allowing my internal power to flow slowly into the blade. The jade dragon on the sword sensed my strength and transformed into a You Long, coiling around my arm.
"What on earth are you doing?! What are those things?!" the Void Spirit scolded from within me.
"Enemies!" I replied, suddenly pushing off the ground and leaping into the air to block the Blood-colored Fireflies. Immediately, I gripped Jiang Ling with one hand and swept a Black Light horizontally, creating a Slash Mark as time froze around me.
A faint sound of insects bursting filled the air as the Blood-colored Fireflies were shattered by the powerful force upon contact with the Slash Mark, exploding one after another.
In that moment, it was as if a rain of blood fell from the sky, with the glowing bodily fluids of the insects continuously dripping to the ground, staining it a deep crimson.
"You call me out just to crush a few pesky bugs? Are you unhappy that your mark isn't growing fast enough?!" The Void Spirit looked at the fireflies I had destroyed, clearly annoyed.
"This is more than just pesky bugs; there might be something terrifying in that village ahead," I said. With that, I descended from the air, stepping through the 'blood water' as I made my way toward the village.
As I approached the village step by step, the chill in the air grew stronger. However, due to the awakening of the Void Spirit within me, I felt no fear at all...
