Before long, I cautiously approached the village entrance, gazing at the thatched houses glowing with a red light. A wave of horror movie scenes flooded my mind. Despite having the Void Spirit by my side, the sudden fright still sent chills down my spine.
"What kind of place is this?" the Void Spirit remarked in my body, its tone dripping with disdain and impatience.
"I have no idea what this place is..." I barely finished when the Void Spirit abruptly interrupted me, shouting, "Heart!"
At the sound of the Void Spirit's voice, for some reason, my body instinctively leaned backward. In an instant, a swarm of Blood-colored Fireflies swept past me, like a flash of red lightning darting before my eyes.
Out of instinct, I gripped Jiang Ling tightly in my right hand and swung it upward in an arc. A Slash Mark emerged from the blade, obliterating all the Blood-colored Fireflies that had flown past me.
"Haah..." I exhaled deeply, scanning my surroundings warily, fearing more insects might emerge from somewhere.
Just as I was looking around, I caught sight through a window of one of the thatched houses. To my horror, I saw that inside those houses were heaps of Blood-colored Fireflies. The unsettling red glow was emanating from swarms of these fireflies.
With the help of that red light, I vaguely noticed that there were bodies lying within. These corpses had long since decayed and were sprouting numerous red plants. Some of these plants had even bloomed into vibrant flowers, and within those flowers, I could faintly see fist-sized fruits emitting a continuous red glow.
"Could this be the true fruit of the Blood Farmer?!" I exclaimed in astonishment to myself, momentarily lost in thought. Just then, the Blood-colored Fireflies inside sensed my presence and rushed toward me like dogs catching a whiff of bone.
Though I was momentarily distracted, their movements were clear to me. I quickly reversed my grip on Jiang Ling and swung my arm to slice through the air.
I intended to use the Slash Mark generated by my sword strike to crush those Blood-colored Fireflies. However, to my surprise, they seemed to possess intelligence; as I unleashed the Slash Mark, they deftly changed direction and skillfully dodged it, heading straight for me.
I froze for a moment, cursing under my breath, "Damn it! These pesky bugs are getting smarter!" Just as I thought this, the Blood-colored Fireflies were already upon me, ready to surround me completely.
However, since they had emerged from the surrounding thatched houses, they hadn’t managed to encircle me from above. Seizing this opportunity, I gathered strength in my legs and leaped into the air to evade their attack.
Seeing me escape, the Blood-colored Fireflies showed no signs of giving up; they changed direction along with my jump and continued to pursue me relentlessly.
"You're really relentless, aren't you..." I muttered to myself, raising Jiang Ling again, ready to strike. But at that moment, the Void Spirit within me said, "Are you really going to keep playing mind games with that bunch of bugs? Can't you try a different attack method?"
Feeling insulted by the Void Spirit's apparent mockery of my intelligence, I snapped back, "Shut up!" With that, I changed my approach, pointing the tip of Jiang Ling downward towards the Blood-colored Fireflies that were chasing me, quickly channeling my power into the sword.
In an instant, a fist-sized Black Sphere formed at the tip of the sword. Unlike the one emitted by Li Zhisheng, this sphere was violently contracting as it absorbed power, and due to the intense compression, it released black lightning continuously.
Just as the sphere was about to reach its peak and the Blood-colored Fireflies flew close to my feet, the pitch-black sphere detached from Jiang Ling. In a split second, there was a whoosh as it shot into the swarm of insects with blinding speed.
A loud boom echoed as a jet of dark light mixed with streaks of black lightning surged forth. The force was so great that I was knocked back several meters.
Once I regained my footing, I saw that the beam of light had not yet dissipated and was slowly expanding, engulfing the surrounding Blood-colored Fireflies along with nearby houses.
Looking at the massive beam before me, I couldn't help but sigh inwardly, "Looks like I've overdone it with my power."
"It should have been like this from the start. When dealing with swarms of enemies, explosive attacks are far more effective than concentrated strikes," the Void Spirit murmured within me.
As I spoke, the beam reached its maximum expansion and then began to slowly dissipate. Before long, it completely vanished. With the disappearance of the light column, I realized that I had indeed overused my power; half of the village had been obliterated by this explosion, leaving behind a bottomless pit in its place.
"How am I supposed to find any clues now..." I lamented.
"There are no living people here; what clues could possibly exist..." the Void Spirit replied.
Hearing this, I wanted to explain that I was looking for a way to save my friend. But then I thought about the Void Spirit's character; it wouldn't care about anyone else's life or death anyway. There was no point in trying to explain anything further.
"What’s wrong with my character?" the Void Spirit suddenly questioned.
At that moment, I suddenly remembered that the Void Spirit could read my thoughts. So I explained, "What I mean is, even if I explain it to you, you won't care anyway. Besides, can't you read my mind? Is there really any need for me to explain further?"
Upon hearing this, he nonchalantly replied, "I may not care, but there's one thing I must remind you: if you don't want me to take over your body, it's best not to use your abilities so recklessly."
After he said that, I quickly glanced at my arm. Although the mark was still some distance from my shoulder, it was gradually spreading upward. Just as the Void Spirit had warned, if I used that technique a few more times, I would truly be in danger.
"Got it, I'll be careful," I said, but I didn't withdraw my power because I still felt that there was some hidden danger lurking around.
Then, I looked around and was relieved to see that some houses remained standing; they hadn't been completely destroyed by the earlier explosion. However, inside the houses was pitch black due to the absence of the fireflies' light.
"I hope I can find an antidote in these remaining houses..." I muttered to myself as I walked toward the nearest thatched cottage.
As soon as I entered the house, a strong smell of decaying corpses assaulted my senses, mixed with an inexplicable fragrance. It resembled the scent of tulips, but combined with the stench of death, it became unbearably foul...
