I continued to read, "Uncle Li can plant now, but the other uncles took him away..." From the misspellings, it was clear that this child might not know many words, but from his expression, it seemed that someone here had been infected but was taken away by others to be dealt with.
After that, the writing on the paper began to blur to the point where it was no longer recognizable as words, but rather a series of hasty scribbles, making it difficult to discern anything at all.
I had originally thought I could find some useful clues within this, but I was disappointed when the trail abruptly ended. A sense of frustration washed over me.
At that moment, I turned back to look at the corpses on the ground; they lay there undisturbed, including several children. The content on that paper might have been written by one of those children.
I searched the room again and found nothing else of use. After confirming there were no more leads, I leaped out through the hole I had fallen into and left the house.
Next, I searched the remaining houses but found nothing valuable. Some were like the first one, containing corpses sprouting blood-red plants, while others were completely empty—no furniture or belongings left behind, as if the owners had long since moved out.
Having found no clues at all left me feeling quite dejected. Standing alone on the village road, I sighed and pondered, "How could this be? This village certainly seems to be the origin of the Blood Farmer, yet why are there no clues whatsoever? Could it really have been obliterated by my actions?"
Just then, Void Spirit, who had been silent until now, suddenly spoke up: "Do you think the murderer would stay at the crime scene after committing their act?"
His words struck a chord within me; I sensed that Void Spirit might know something. His statement felt like an intentional reminder.
"You mean this place is just the crime scene and not where the murderer is?" I quickly pressed for clarification.
Void Spirit replied calmly, "I don't know the details of this matter. However, often what we see is not all there is to reality, and what we think may not be entirely illusory. As for the truth of this situation, it depends on how you choose to judge it."
Upon hearing this, it felt as if a clue had suddenly clicked in my mind. I began to think rapidly while continuously scanning my surroundings, softly muttering to myself: "Truth and falsehood... illusion and reality..."
Looking at the pile of buildings I had destroyed and the remaining thatched huts nearby, a sudden realization struck me: "Could it be that I've been guessing wrong all along?! This village is indeed where the signs of the Blood Farmer first appeared, but the true Blood Farmer is not here; this is merely a garden for the Blood Farmer!"
I exclaimed in surprise with wide eyes. At that moment, dark clouds gathered overhead, and with a loud crack of thunder that illuminated everything around me as bright as day.
"Yeah, how did I not think of this before... The people in this village seem to have been dead for a long time, and the rumors I heard recently clearly don't match the situation here. The villagers must have all died long ago, and that old man and his group couldn't possibly be unaware of it... Could it be that their entire village is made up of Blood Farmers, trying to turn all these surrounding areas into their garden?!"
I muttered to myself, and as the words echoed in my mind, the conversations with the old man and the middle-aged woman resurfaced. The more I thought about it, the colder I felt inside, and beads of cold sweat began to trickle down my forehead.
At that moment, I realized something was wrong. Haoyang and Li Zhisheng were still at their house. If they really were Blood Farmers, then now would be the perfect time for them to strike!
Without hesitation, I quickly summoned the power of Void Spirit and dashed back toward the village.
Thanks to using Void Spirit's power, what would have taken half an hour only took me a few minutes. When I arrived, the village looked just as it had when I left—dimly lit thatched houses lined the dark road, with flickering candlelight spilling out from within.
But instead of feeling warmth from that candlelight, I was engulfed by a chilling sensation.
In the blink of an eye, I reached the old man's house. There was no sound inside; it was eerily quiet. Seeing this, I pushed open the door without a second thought.
The room was empty, with weak candlelight flickering on the table. My ominous premonition grew stronger as I quickly made my way toward the bedroom.
Just as I lifted the curtain to enter the bedroom, I saw the old man and the middle-aged woman standing by the window with gleaming knives in hand, their backs turned to me. On the bed lay Haoyang, motionless, while Li Zhisheng seemed exhausted and had fallen asleep beside him, completely oblivious to the danger behind him.
Seeing this, I shouted urgently, "Hey! What are you doing?!" As I rushed forward before they could react, I raised Jiang Ling and struck down their knives with two sharp clangs.
As their knives clattered to the ground, they whipped around in shock. In the candlelight, two grotesque faces appeared before me; long, red tendrils extended from their mouths, each adorned with a dripping crimson bud.
Suddenly, those buds opened wide like snake heads without eyes and lunged at me.
Having anticipated an attack, I swiftly raised my hand and slashed with my sword, severing both buds in one motion as they fell to the ground.
The old man and the middle-aged woman saw the flower bud severed and let out frantic cries as they hurriedly retreated, crashing against the wall behind them.
At that moment, the sounds from this series of actions startled Li Zhisheng, who had been asleep. As he turned around and saw me fiercely pointing my sword at the old man and the middle-aged woman, he was momentarily at a loss.
"Shen Xu, what's wrong?!" Li Zhisheng asked.
"These two are Blood Farmers! I shouldn't have spared them from the beginning!" I said, gripping my sword with one hand and sweeping it horizontally towards the two of them, intending to cleave them in half.
However, just as I made my move, several bright red vines suddenly emerged from nowhere, tightly wrapping around my sword arm and legs.
Seeing this, I tried to use my other hand to tear at the vines, but as soon as I moved, they ensnared me again. In an instant, I found myself completely immobilized; even with the power of the Void Spirit, I struggled to exert any force.
Realizing I could no longer resist, the old man and the middle-aged woman before me revealed their sinister expressions. They were licking their lips over the branches where I had severed the flower buds and slowly began to close in on me…
