As the blood flowed out, Haoyang gradually regained consciousness. He opened his eyes and looked at me and Li Zhisheng. "I... where am I..." Before he could finish, he was seized by a fit of violent coughing. This time, not only did he spit out blood, but it was also mixed with small red, thread-like substances that resembled plant roots.
"Do you feel any better now?" I anxiously patted his back, hoping to help him calm down.
"Much better. It seems like there's no longer that foreign sensation inside me, and my breathing has become a lot smoother," Haoyang said as he wiped the blood from the corner of his mouth.
Once he steadied himself, he looked around and noticed Li Zhisheng's concerned gaze. Confused, he asked me, "Weren't we just at that old man's house? How did we end up here in this desolate place? What happened to the village?"
I sighed and recounted everything that had transpired while he was unconscious. After hearing it all, although Haoyang appeared somewhat bewildered, there was a hint of unease in his expression.
"What's wrong? Is something off?" Li Zhisheng noticed the change in Haoyang's demeanor and asked.
Haoyang pondered for a moment before saying, "So those two really are the true Blood Farmers? They are the ones behind all of this?"
"That's right. What are you thinking?" I replied.
"Have you considered what we ate at their house before all this happened..." As Haoyang spoke, a chill ran down my spine. I suddenly remembered that before heading to the neighboring village, we had eaten a meal at their home, and that food could very well have come from the corpses...
Thinking of this made my stomach churn violently; I felt like I could vomit everything I had consumed. But it was too late; the food had already been digested and absorbed into my body.
At that moment, it wasn't just me—Li Zhisheng also looked extremely uncomfortable. He frowned and pressed one hand against his stomach. But soon after, I steadied myself, feeling no other unusual symptoms in my body. "You both shouldn't feel too bad. In fact, after eating that stuff, we haven't felt anything wrong until now. Perhaps it was edible food; it's just that the cultivation method is extremely inhumane."
After I finished speaking, Li Zhisheng tried to calm himself down to check if there were any abnormalities in his body. After a moment, he still frowned and said, "No, that kind of 'food' definitely has side effects..."
"What?!" My heart sank in shock.
"I'm starting to feel a bit hungry now, and I really want to eat that kind of food!" He said, beads of sweat rolling down his forehead.
"Now that you mention it, I also..." At that moment, my stomach began to growl as well, and I felt an intense craving for that "food," almost like an addiction. I even wanted to rush back to the village I had flattened and see if there were any remnants of that "food" left.
I had to fight hard against my desires to keep myself rational. "It seems that the fruits grown by the Blood Farmer are like drugs, creating a strong sense of dependency that compels people to consume them." I could feel sweat starting to bead on my forehead too.
At that moment, Haoyang, who had been leaning against the side, looked at me and Li Zhisheng calmly. "I feel the same way as you two, but not as strongly. Maybe it's because I've been lying down, so I haven't expended much energy and don't feel hungry."
"Regardless, we should leave here first; otherwise, I might really go back to find that damned 'food!'" Li Zhisheng said anxiously.
I suppressed my emotions and replied, "It's the middle of the night; where can we go? Have you forgotten? That town was destroyed by the Mountain Flood. How can we go back? Are we supposed to walk back?!"
"We can't just stay here forever! I think you want to eat that damned 'food' just as much as I do. Do you want to become a Blood Farmer?!" Li Zhisheng suddenly stood up, his expression serious and somewhat feral in the dim moonlight.
Hearing him say this, I knew deep down that it wasn't a big deal and we could discuss it calmly. But I felt an urge to lash out at him. I continued to suppress myself and tried to remain calm. "Just take it easy for now. Since things have come to this point, there will be a way..."
Before I could finish, Li Zhisheng suddenly gathered a Black Sphere and slammed it into the large tree behind Haoyang. There was a loud bang as the tree, over a meter wide, was blown apart and collapsed with a crash. "What way?! What other way is there?!" he shouted angrily.
Li Zhisheng's temperament had changed drastically; not only was I shocked, but even Haoyang beside me was taken aback. He quickly turned and pressed close to me, whispering, "What's wrong with Li Zhisheng? Is it the effect of that Blood Farmer plant?"
"It should be." With sudden determination, I grabbed Li Zhisheng's arm and swept my leg under him, tripping him to the ground.
Taking advantage of his fall, I twisted his arm behind his back and pressed my weight down on him. "Li Zhisheng, calm down! I know you're feeling terrible right now, but so am I! If you lose your rationality in this situation, we might end up in an even more dangerous predicament."
After the sudden attack, Li Zhisheng seemed to be startled. At that moment, instead of becoming more frantic, he gradually calmed down. Lying on the ground, he gasped for breath and said relatively calmly, "Thank you, I feel a bit better now. Let... let me go." He appeared to be in some pain from being pinned down, a look of discomfort crossing his face.
Seeing this, I quickly released my grip on him and slowly moved away, fearing he might go wild again.
Once freed, Li Zhisheng let out a long sigh. He turned over and lay on his back, gazing at the stars above. "Now I finally understand why those villagers went crazy. These bloody vegetables are indeed something else."
"Otherwise, why would they go to such lengths to lure people into the village and then use them as 'fertilizer' for their crops? Those words they said to me before, and the cabbage they sold me were probably all part of their trap. Perhaps they have lured many others this way before, but this time they brought about their own demise..."
"Yeah..." Li Zhisheng sighed again.
Just then, a hint of light began to appear on the horizon. "Is it already getting bright?" Haoyang said as he got up and looked toward the rising sun.
As I struggled to suppress my craving for those vegetables, I stood up and brushed off the dust from my clothes. "Since it's getting bright, we should hit the road..."
