"Now it seems like the only option is to walk back," Li Zhisheng said as he stood up beside me.
Hearing this, I thought carefully. It didn't necessarily mean we had to go back the same way. After all, if there had been a landslide that buried a town, and considering the serious accident we had earlier, it was unlikely that no one would come to investigate or rescue. If we returned along our original route, we might just encounter a rescue team.
With this thought in mind, I shared my idea with Haoyang and Li Zhisheng. After receiving their agreement, I helped them both as we set off on our return journey.
Along the way, we worried about getting lost and dragged our exhausted bodies back along the original path until we reached the site of the landslide.
At that moment, we indeed saw some rescue workers in uniforms conducting search and rescue operations nearby, while medical staff and volunteers were also joining in.
We stood on the hillside, wanting to shout out to them to let them know we were there. However, after a night of struggle and a morning of hiking, we were so tired that we could barely speak, only able to hoarsely call out, "Help... help..."
As we shouted, a few volunteers in the distance seemed to notice us. They hurriedly signaled to others nearby and rushed toward us. Seeing this gave me hope, and I instantly relaxed. But as my body lost its tension, I suddenly felt weak and blacked out…
…
I don't know how long it had been when a bright beam of sunlight shone on my face, pulling me back from my slumber.
As I opened my eyes, I realized I was in a hospital. There was an IV drip in my arm, with medicine flowing drop by drop into my veins. On the beds beside me lay Haoyang and Li Zhisheng; they seemed still asleep while a nurse was changing their IV bags.
"Nurse! Nurse..." I called out to the nurse nearby as I slowly sat up. "How are they?"
"You’re awake! They’re fine; just very exhausted. They just need some rest," she replied as she finished changing the IV bag and hurried away, looking quite busy.
At that moment, my conversation with the nurse seemed to wake Haoyang and Li Zhisheng. They both opened their eyes and looked around in confusion. "Where am I?" they asked.
"In a hospital," I answered. "You’re both okay; just get some rest."
Upon hearing this, Li Zhisheng climbed out of bed and looked out at the sunny window. "I know this is a hospital, but where exactly are we?"
After listening, I looked around and noticed the name of the hospital on the bedside table. It seemed to be a hospital in my city, and it appeared to be not far from our previous rental.
At that moment, seeing that Li Zhisheng had also noticed the name of the hospital, I said, "Although I don't come here often, if I remember correctly, this hospital should be close to our rental."
"Then let's head back," Li Zhisheng replied. "Hu Fang and the others have been worried about us since they haven't heard from us." He attempted to get out of bed but, not noticing the needle in his arm, accidentally pulled out the IV line, causing him to gasp in pain.
Seeing this, I quickly pressed the call button by the bed and said, "I know you're worried about them, but we should at least wait until the IV is finished."
Soon after, a nurse arrived. After scolding Li Zhisheng for a bit, she helped him reinsert the needle.
Afterward, we discussed some matters regarding Blood Farmer. Once the IV was done, we settled the bill and left the hospital.
As we stepped outside, I realized that this place was very close to our rental—only about twenty minutes away. However, since we had just woken up from a deep sleep and were still feeling weak, we decided to take a taxi back.
The ride was quiet. Upon arriving home and stepping through the door, we were greeted by Hu Fang, who looked extremely worried. "Where have you two been? There was a landslide and a car accident earlier; I thought something happened to you!"
I smiled wryly and replied, "Yes, we experienced both a car accident and a landslide. Fortunately, we were rescued by a rescue team; otherwise, we might not have made it back." I gestured toward our bare upper bodies.
At that moment, I suddenly felt something was off—as if I was missing something. I began searching my body while muttering softly to myself, "Am I missing something…?"
Just then, Haoyang, who had been mostly silent until now, spoke up. "Looking for something?"
I was about to respond when it suddenly hit me what was missing. "Jiang Ling!" I exclaimed. "Where's Jiang Ling?!" Since I had fainted during the incident, the rescue team must have prioritized saving lives over retrieving my belongings.
"Don't worry; your sword is with me…" Li Zhisheng said as he pulled Jiang Ling out from his pant leg.
I stared at him in astonishment as he revealed Jiang Ling. "How did you manage that?!"
Li Zhisheng chuckled wryly and explained, "I guess this is fate. My pants are double-layered. When you fainted, I was about to collapse too. But when I saw your sword fall, I quickly picked it up. Not knowing where to put it so it wouldn't get lost, I stuffed it into my pant leg. Then I fainted as well. Whether it was coincidence or luck, your sword ended up tearing through the lining of my pants and stayed inside."
Upon hearing this, I took the still-warm sword from his hand, unsure of what expression to wear.
"You’re back..." At that moment, Yao Long, who had been in the back room, stepped out. However, upon seeing Haoyang with us, his expression darkened slightly. Yet, he did not directly tell Haoyang to leave. Instead, he silently walked over to my side and asked, "So, did you find any clues?"
I motioned for Hu Fang to take Li Zhisheng and Haoyang back to rest while shaking my head at Yao Long. "No, no clues at all, just a body full of injuries..." I glanced around the room and noticed that Death Apostle was missing. I then asked, "By the way, where is Death Apostle? Why haven’t I seen him? Did something happen?"
Yao Long chuckled. "No, he probably ate something bad from takeout and has been running to the bathroom. He’s still in there now."
"At least nothing serious happened. I remember we have some stomach medicine at home; you should go find it for him. I'll head back to my room to get some things..." With that, I went back to my room alone.
Once inside, I pulled out the Sheepskin Book, looking at the mark on my hand. I wanted to record the incident with Blood Farmer in it and see if it would have any effect.
But to my surprise, as I wrote the final period, the words on the paper began to slowly fade until they completely disappeared...
