Hearing the voice, I instinctively pulled Hu Fang and Death Apostle back. There was a frail figure crouched on a large rock behind us. He wore a brown jacket on top and deep blue jeans below, which were already tattered with several torn patches.
"Who are you?!" I demanded.
"Who am I?" The man sneered as he jumped down from the rock. "I am not human; I am a ghost, specifically here to take your lives, Evil Spirit..." As he spoke, his eyes glowed a deep red, and suddenly he vanished right before my eyes.
"Heart!" Yao Long shouted from a distance, raising Azure Spirit. The blue flames of the Void Spirit on the bow quickly coalesced into an arrow, which then transformed into a streak of blue light shooting toward me.
Before I could react, I heard a "whoosh" behind me as if something had caught the arrow, stopping it just behind my back.
Turning around, I saw a pair of blood-red eyes fixed intently on me. He was gripping the arrow shot by Yao Long, and with a sudden force, he crushed the flaming arrow into pieces.
"Attacking your allies isn't good..." he taunted.
"I'm not attacking an ally; I'm targeting you! Shen Xu, get out of the way!" Yao Long shouted again, releasing another arrow while simultaneously pushing off the ground to charge at this self-proclaimed Evil Spirit behind me.
Seeing this, I quickly dodged aside, pulling Death Apostle and Hu Fang with me as we rolled away to safety.
At that moment, both Yao Long and his arrow reached the side of the Evil Spirit. Yao Long intended to inflict damage through close combat while the Evil Spirit was distracted by the arrow. However, to his surprise, the Evil Spirit let out a soft grunt and swiftly turned around. He leaped lightly into the air and aimed a kick at both the arrow and Yao Long's shoulder.
If it had been the old Yao Long, that kick would have surely hit. But now empowered by the strength of Worm King, he wouldn’t be so easily struck.
As the kick from the Evil Spirit knocked away the arrow, Yao Long immediately halted, gripping Azure Spirit tightly with one hand. With that hand holding Azure Spirit, he lunged toward the leg of the Evil Spirit.
With a loud "crack," the attack from the Evil Spirit was blocked. Thanks to the light emitted by the blue flames from Yao Long's bow, I saw that his bow was firmly pressed against the leg of the Evil Spirit.
"Are you really here to take our lives, rather than to lose your own?" Yao Long smirked, pulling back the bowstring with his free hand. In an instant, a blue arrow materialized.
The Evil Spirit gasped in alarm, attempting to retract its leg, but it was already too late. Yao Long's arrow had been released, and with a whoosh, it pierced through the Evil Spirit's leg.
The force of the arrow was considerable; as it struck, the Evil Spirit's entire body was propelled backward and crashed heavily to the ground.
"You're good at trash talk, but is that all you've got?" Li Zhisheng approached, gathering energy for a Black Sphere in his hand before hurling it at the Evil Spirit, showing no intention of giving it a moment to breathe.
As the Black Sphere exploded into a cloud of black smoke, I couldn't shake off my doubts. This person had previously evaded Yao Long's senses and appeared silently behind us; there must be something extraordinary about them. How could they be defeated so easily?
I glanced at the Death Apostle beside me; he seemed to sense something was amiss as well, frowning involuntarily.
"Something's definitely not right..." I muttered to myself, and in a daze, I thought I saw something behind Yao Long that glimmered faintly with red light.
Realizing the danger, I shouted urgently, "Yao Long, it's behind you!"
Yao Long reacted as if he had sensed it beforehand. He swiftly turned around, drawing his bow and aiming at what was behind him. But even with his quick reflexes, he was still a moment too late. A flash of cold light appeared as a silver dagger suddenly emerged and plunged into Yao Long's abdomen with lightning speed.
Li Zhisheng witnessed this scene and instinctively conjured another Black Sphere to throw at the source of the faint red glow. However, before he could act, an invisible force struck him in the chest. He let out a muffled groan and was sent flying backward.
The impact was powerful enough to send Li Zhisheng tumbling several dozen meters before he finally came to a stop. Meanwhile, Yao Long staggered from his abdominal injury; his upper body weakened as he leaned dangerously to one side. Before he could regain his balance, another wave of invisible force concentrated on his wounded abdomen.
Yao Long let out a pained scream as he was also knocked to the ground.
At that moment, the faint red glow slowly revealed its source—a figure emerged from the shadows; it was none other than the Evil Spirit. It brushed off its clothes lightly and remarked, "You only defeated my shadow, yet you're so pleased? You must be underestimating me..."
At that moment, in the distance, Li Zhisheng struggled to stand up. From his movements, it was clear that the previous blow had injured him significantly; even standing seemed to be a challenge for him. Meanwhile, Yao Long lay on the ground, clutching his bleeding abdomen, and Azure Spirit was also sprawled nearby.
At this time, Haoyang, who had been hiding in the shadows away from the moonlight, slowly emerged. He tightly gripped the remaining four Cloth Bags at his waist and crouched down as he approached the Evil Spirit from behind.
Noticing that I had spotted him, Haoyang made a shushing gesture towards me, signaling us to remain silent. Understanding his intent, Death Apostle and I dared not make a sound and silently observed the Evil Spirit's every move.
I watched as the Evil Spirit casually slipped one hand into his jeans pocket while moving closer to the fallen Yao Long. He muttered to himself, "Did I not tell you? I am not human. Why do you refuse to believe it? Trying to deal with me using human methods, you think...?" At this point, he suddenly turned around and shouted angrily at Haoyang, who was cautiously approaching him, "Is it useful?!"
A chill ran down my spine as I thought urgently for Haoyang to run. But before I could say anything, the Evil Spirit vanished from sight and reappeared behind Haoyang in an instant. He then kicked Haoyang directly towards Yao Long.
Unable to contain myself any longer, I sprang up, drawing Jiang Ling from behind me and shouted, "Stop!"
As soon as the words left my mouth, I sensed an unusual aura nearby. Turning my head, I saw Hu Fang crouching on the ground surrounded by faint red lightning crackling around her. She remained silent, as if a powerful force was about to surge from within her...
