"Li, Li Zhisheng!" I wanted to shout, but the words stuck in my throat, as if something invisible was blocking my mouth.
In a moment of desperation, I instinctively waved my arms in the air, trying to grasp something, but this action was undoubtedly futile. Not only did I fail to touch anything, but I also wasted a lot of energy, which only made me feel more anxious.
Having gone through so much and seen countless ghosts, why was I still feeling uneasy at this moment? Was it the sense of powerlessness from being unable to use my abilities?!
Thinking this, I tried hard to calm my emotions and lowered my flailing arms to my sides. "Hoo..." I took a deep breath, feeling the changes happening around me.
But just then, something suddenly grabbed my hands tightly from both sides. Now, even if I wanted to move, I couldn't budge at all. A wave of intense fear surged in my heart as my limbs became immobilized.
I widened my eyes and twisted the only part of my body that could move—my neck—trying to see if there would be a half-rotten woman's face appearing as Hu Fang had described.
As I looked around anxiously, I suddenly noticed a dark mass slowly rising from beside my pillow. "Is this Hu Fang's face?!" I thought, feeling a surge of tension as I stared at the dark mass.
As seconds ticked by, I realized that the black mass was indeed the hair of that female ghost. At that moment, her entire face was fully revealed before me.
Her deep and hollow eye sockets radiated waves of grievance, while the other half of her face had rotted away to expose white bones, sending chills down my spine.
"Why is it a man..." The female ghost looked at me and suddenly spoke in a sharp voice. Her tone suggested she was utterly confused by my presence and seemed somewhat angry.
"Is her target Hu Fang?!" I thought to myself.
Just then, I heard another woman's voice coming from somewhere. This time, the voice sounded very childish, ethereal and sharp: "Is it not okay for a man?"
As the voice echoed, a childlike ghost emerged from beside the woman's head. It bared its teeth, blood continuously flowing from its mouth, and a foul stench rushed into my nostrils, making me cough uncontrollably.
"Men... men are better... hahaha..." Suddenly, the woman went wild, laughing maniacally as she opened her bloody maw and lunged at me.
The childlike vengeful spirit followed suit, pouncing towards me with an even wider mouth than that of the female ghost. The two evil spirits had mouths as wide as bowls filled with sharp barbs; if they bit down on my arm, even if it didn’t sever it completely, those sharp spikes would tear away large chunks of flesh.
At that critical moment, I suddenly felt my bound hands and feet loosen violently. Sensing the opportunity, I sprang up from the bed, sitting upright. My back was already soaked, and beads of sweat rolled down my forehead.
I gasped for breath, trying hard to calm my startled self.
After a brief pause, I heard Li Zhisheng's voice at the door. He wiped his mouth with a tissue and slowly walked towards me. Noticing my unusual expression, he asked, "Have you seen that Evil Spirit?"
I wiped the sweat from my forehead with my sleeve and replied, "I did see it, but not just one; there were two. One looked like a woman and the other like a child—a Vengeful Spirit. They carry a heavy Grievance; it seems they were wronged and have been eyeing Hu Fang for quite some time."
"Eyeing Hu Fang? What do you mean?" Li Zhisheng asked. I recounted everything I had just witnessed in detail.
After listening, Li Zhisheng muttered in surprise, "They had such a good opportunity when Hu Fang was unconscious, yet they didn't act. Instead, they waited until Hu Fang regained some strength before making their move. What could they possibly want..."
"This question can only be answered once you catch them and interrogate them yourself..." With that, I lay back on the bed.
"Alright then, you go ahead and sleep. I'll keep watch beside you," Li Zhisheng said as he pulled over the chair I had moved earlier and sat down next to the bed.
"Are you really not going to fall asleep?" I felt a bit uneasy about Li Zhisheng since he often dozed off while sitting.
"Don't worry; I won't fall asleep at a time like this. Do you think I'm that careless?!" Li Zhisheng replied irritably.
Hearing this, I thought to myself that he wasn't always so alert; if Yao Long weren't around, I wouldn't have asked him for help at all. With that in mind, I said to him, "Okay, okay, I trust you. I'm going to sleep now."
With that, I closed my eyes, trying to drift off. However, due to the earlier scare, I couldn't fall asleep no matter how hard I tried; I tossed and turned restlessly.
I don't know how long had passed when suddenly I heard the window creak open with a "squeak," and a gust of wind blew in from outside, making the curtains flutter noisily.
"Are they here?" I opened my eyes and asked.
"Not yet." Li Zhisheng was now standing beside me, his eyes fixed intently on the window.
After a moment of silence, Li Zhisheng suddenly exclaimed urgently, "Over here!" As soon as the words left his mouth, he quickly dashed from the bedside and rushed to the window, reaching out as if to grab something.
"Did you catch it?!" I hurriedly got out of bed to take a look, but just as my legs swung over the edge, I heard Li Zhisheng shout at me, "Don't move!"
But it was too late; my legs had already touched the floor. At that moment, I was sitting on the edge of the bed, my legs dangling in mid-air and not yet touching the ground.
Hearing his shout, I quickly glanced down. To my horror, I was met with a child's face staring intently at me from below. Its gaping mouth was right beneath my legs, and if I stepped down, it would surely swallow me whole.
In a panic, I lifted my foot to retreat back onto the bed. However, just as I did so, a withered arm suddenly reached up from below and grabbed my ankle, yanking me downward with force.
Realizing the danger, Li Zhisheng wasted no time. He swiftly threw the Vengeful Spirit he had been holding out of the window and then rushed over to me in a few quick strides. He kicked away the two withered arms that were gripping my ankle and grabbed my legs with one hand, tossing my feet back onto the bed.
At that moment, I caught a glimpse of something unsettling: a decaying face half-rotten was perched on Li Zhisheng's shoulder. It wore a twisted smile and looked at him with hollow eyes…
