Standing by the roadside, I gazed up at the towering mountain before me. One side was a sheer rock face, impossible to climb, while the other was shrouded in thick fog. Although it appeared to have a gentle slope and was covered in lush greenery, the dense mist could easily conceal dangers that might put Yao Long in peril.
"What should we do? Which way should we go? The dangerous cliff or the gentle slope?" I asked Li Zhisheng.
Looking at the mountain peak, I fell into deep thought. "If it were Yao Long, which path would he choose?" I furrowed my brow, realizing that our immediate priority wasn't to uncover the mysteries hidden within the mountain but to find Yao Long as quickly as possible.
Seeing my uncertainty, Li Zhisheng shared his analysis. "If it were Yao Long, I suspect he would normally choose the steep cliff. Although it looks dangerous, he would be able to see the path clearly and assess the situation better than on that fog-covered gentle slope. However, since Yao Long's goal is to investigate the secrets of this mountain, I think he might be more likely to opt for the gentle slope."
"So you mean he could be trapped in the fog on that slope? But that shouldn't be..." I pulled out my phone to check; the signal was strong, and the mountain wasn't far from us. It didn't make sense that he would lose signal completely once he entered.
"Could it be due to unnatural factors? But it's broad daylight..." I muttered to myself.
"At this point, speculating further seems futile. We should investigate first. Can you use the power of Void Spirit now?" Li Zhisheng asked.
Upon hearing this, I tried to sense the Void Spirit within me. Although it was currently sealed by Xie, its power had grown too strong for him to contain completely. I could faintly feel its energy and realized that if I entered a near-death state again, I could break through the seal.
"It should be fine," I replied.
"Well, my Soul Burial power isn't fully restored yet, but it's about seventy to eighty percent recovered. Combined with your Void Spirit's strength, we should be able to handle it," Li Zhisheng said as he clenched his fist, a wisp of black mist slowly escaping between his fingers.
Just then, Li Zhisheng seemed to remember something and quickly asked me, "By the way, did you bring Jiang Ling's and Yao Long's bows?"
His question jolted my memory; not only had I forgotten Yao Long's bow, but I also didn't have Jiang Ling's with me. Now, even summoning Void Spirit using Jiang Ling's bow was impossible.
"Oh no, how could I forget about this?" I exclaimed, slapping my forehead in frustration.
At that moment, Li Zhisheng raised the corners of his mouth and smiled slightly. "I knew you wouldn't remember to bring it." He took off his coat, revealing a long object wrapped in brown cloth on his back, along with Yao Long's bow hidden behind him.
"Here," he said, taking the brown-wrapped object from his back and tossing it to me. "I noticed you were empty-handed when you left, and Yao Long's bow was still in the living room. I thought about whether the Black Soldier mentioned in the letter might be related to your weapons. So before I set out, I kept an eye out and took Jiang Ling and Azure Spirit from the living room while you weren't paying attention."
Hearing this, I realized I hadn't noticed that Yao Long hadn't taken Azure Spirit when he left. It was strange; he usually never went anywhere without his bow, yet he hadn't brought Azure Spirit during our last two missions. Why was that?
Though I was puzzled, since Li Zhisheng had brought Azure Spirit along, we should make good use of it. I asked him, "Can you use Yao Long's bow? If so, if we encounter danger, you should..."
Before I could finish, Li Zhisheng quickly took down Azure Spirit from his back and handed it to me. "Did you forget? I used Azure Spirit once before; it absorbed all my power at once and released it uncontrollably. It's too dangerous for me; you should use it instead."
With that, I had no choice but to strap Jiang Ling onto my back and take the Azure Spirit he offered. Since I had never used Yao Long's Azure Spirit before, I wasn't sure if it would work like Jiang Ling, but given the circumstances, it was up to me to use it now.
After everything was settled, we headed toward the misty mountain ahead.
As we walked, the path was undeveloped and overgrown with weeds. Among the knee-high grass were many loose stones that could trip us up if we weren't careful, forcing us to proceed cautiously.
Due to our slow pace, what should have been a journey of about ten minutes took us over half an hour to reach the foot of the mountain.
Standing at the base and looking up, we saw thick clouds of mist rising from the trees on the mountain. The visibility was far lower than we had anticipated.
"This mountain mist really is like a cloud," Li Zhisheng remarked with some concern in his voice. "At this rate, visibility must be only about ten meters or even less."
"But even so, we have to go find Yao Long. We can't just stand by and watch him potentially fall into danger, right? Also, the fog here is too thick, and visibility is low, which could easily lead us to get lost. Let's try not to stray too far."
Li Zhisheng nodded in agreement. After that, we slowly made our way toward the dense fog.
Once we entered it, as Li Zhisheng had said, the visibility was extremely low. Several times I nearly walked into a large tree without noticing it.
At that moment, Li Zhisheng pulled me to a stop and said, "Wait a minute, Shen Xu. Don't you think something feels off here?" He bent down and picked up a stone from the ground covered with dry leaves, then began marking a nearby tree with it.
"What do you mean..." I was about to ask him what felt wrong when I realized that instead of heading toward the Mountain, we were now walking downhill. We hadn’t even noticed when we had gone off course.
"How could this happen?!" I quickly looked around. The area was still shrouded in thick fog, making it impossible to see far ahead. The light was dim due to being blocked by both the tree canopy and the dense mist.
Li Zhisheng continued marking while explaining, "The slope here is relatively gentle, so it's not easy to notice. Plus, the ground is covered with a lot of dry leaves and grass along with the thick fog in front of us, which further weakens our sense of direction. It's very likely that while we were dodging the suddenly appearing tree trunks, we lost our way..."
