"Is this really a Black Soldier?" I was puzzled. I thought to myself that I had been wielding this weapon for nearly two years; how could I not have discovered its true purpose? Or had I misunderstood this weapon all along?
As I pondered, I glanced at the Jiang Ling in my hand. The dark blade looked as ominous as ever under the light, but after hearing Mo Shu's words, I felt a strange unfamiliarity with the Jiang Ling that had accompanied me for nearly two years.
"If that's the case, does that mean my Azure Spirit is the same?" Yao Long interjected, pointing to the Azure Spirit still slung across my back.
"Exactly. The two Black Soldiers you hold are not what you think they are," Mo Shu said as he slowly walked over to me, extending his hand and signaling for me to hand over both weapons.
I hesitated for a moment, but seeing his kind smile and sensing no malice, my curiosity about what he meant by the true Black Soldier got the better of me. So, I took off the Azure Spirit from my back and handed it along with the Jiang Ling to him.
After receiving the Azure Spirit and Jiang Ling, the old man weighed them in his hands and muttered to himself, "Just as I suspected, your weapons are not ordinary Black Soldiers; they are specifically designed to counter Yin Masters and Yang Masters."
I was taken aback, thinking I must have misheard. The weapons I had used for so long were actually meant to counter myself?! "Are you sure? Isn't it true that only those with special souls and Void Spirits can wield a Black Soldier? How could it be designed to counter Yin Masters and Yang Masters?"
Seeing my confusion, Yao Long chimed in, "Yeah, Master Mo Shu, are you sure about this? I've been using this bow for many years."
Mo Shu noticed our bewilderment and returned Jiang Ling and Azure Spirit to us. "I'm not mistaken, and neither are you. The Black Soldiers you hold are indeed designed to counter Yin Masters and Yang Masters. The reason these weapons can only be activated by special souls and Void Spirits is that they are specifically made to kill Yin Masters and Yang Masters. Haven't you noticed that these weapons absorb your strength and blood?"
"I have noticed... but isn't that just to activate the spirits within the weapons? Doesn't it make one stronger?" I replied, feeling a bit confused myself.
Mo Shu explained, "That's right; absorbing the blood and souls of Yin Masters and Yang Masters can indeed make the weapons stronger. However, as your weapons grow more powerful, you will become increasingly weaker..." Just then, Mo Shu's expression suddenly turned serious. He lunged forward swiftly and snatched Jiang Ling from my hand.
"What are you doing..." Before I could finish my sentence, a sharp pain shot through my arm. Looking down, I saw that the blade of Jiang Ling was embedded in my skin. Although the wound wasn't deep, blood flowed freely from it, and I realized that the blood pouring out of me was continuously gathering into Jiang Ling.
As the blood flowed in, I suddenly sensed something unusual; it seemed that the power of the Void Spirit, which had been dormant within me, was also being drawn away.
"How could this be..."
"Do you understand now?" Mo Shu pulled the sword out from my arm. "Rather than telling you, it's easier for you to experience it yourself." He then twisted his wrist, gripping Jiang Ling with the blade pointed at his own chest, and handed me the hilt. "This is why your blood and the Void Spirit can be infused into the sword; because the sword itself continuously absorbs your power. Once this Black Soldier is in the hands of a killer, we can convert your Void Spirit's power and vitality for our own use."
At that moment, I realized everything. Hesitantly, I took Jiang Ling from Mo Shu, thinking to myself, "No wonder this weapon is specifically designed to kill Yin Masters and Yang Masters. It means that those who kill do not need a Void Spirit to contend with powerful Void Spirits; the reason lies in this weapon."
"So, we have never been enhancing our own power with the Black Soldier; rather, we have been controlled by it?" Yao Long also understood now, looking incredulously at the Azure Spirit in his hand.
"Yes, you're not wrong. In short, this weapon actually suppresses your power, preventing you from unleashing your full potential. So, my guiding you up the mountain this time was to help you break free from the Black Soldier's restrictions."
"You mean that after breaking these restrictions, the weapon will no longer absorb our blood and souls?"
"Not only that; the power contained within this weapon will continuously provide you with strength. That's why I needed to test you—to see if you are capable of bearing this power. Otherwise, not only would you fail to gain the spirit within this sword, but you could also be harmed by its power."
"So that's why those eight spirits I absorbed in the mountains were deliberately arranged by this old man!" I murmured, feeling a surge of anger because his test had almost cost Li Zhisheng his life.
"What... what?! You absorbed them?!" Despite my low voice, it seemed Mo Shu still heard me. He looked somewhat angry and said, "Do you know those spirits were my guardians of the mountain? Now that you've absorbed them, how am I supposed to protect Yunpo Mountain? Oh dear, you young people!"
"Guarding this mountain? With just those few spirits?" I was quite surprised.
Mo Shu stomped his foot and replied, "Yes! Those spirits have been around for quite some time; they have always guarded the mountain against invasions by Yin Masters and Yang Masters. Once they use Void Spirit or soul powers, they can sense it and attack the user of that power. Although they aren't particularly strong, they are more than enough to deal with most Yin Masters and Yang Masters. At least they could hold them off for a while. But now..." With that, Mo Shu let out a long sigh.
Upon hearing this, I felt a moment of guilt, but given the circumstances, I had no other choice. Otherwise, Li Zhisheng and I might have already been killed by those spirits.
"How about I..." I started to offer compensation, but then I realized that even the Void Spirit might not know where to find such things. How could I possibly make it up to him? Reluctantly, I listened as Mo Shu continued to complain in front of us.
After a moment of grumbling, he waved his hand and said, "Forget it, forget it. Since you've already absorbed it, consider it a gift from me. However, I have one request..."
"What request?" Hearing him stop complaining felt like a reprieve, and I quickly asked.
Mo Shu held up two fingers in front of me and mumbled, "Two carts full of sweet and fragrant Jujubes..."
