"Over there!" I exclaimed, rushing into the alley. Li Zhisheng and Hu Fang quickly followed me into the narrow passage.
After a moment, as I emerged from the alley, I spotted the yellow-brown dog sitting at the entrance. It was perched there, staring at us with wide eyes as we hurried out, completely unlike any ordinary dog that would run away upon seeing people. At that moment, it lifted a hind leg to scratch itself, looking quite content.
"You stubborn dog! Now I've caught you!" I said irritably, reaching out to grab it. But before I could touch it, the dog let out a whimper and extended its tongue, starting to lick my hand as if trying to befriend me.
Instantly, my anger dissipated. I crouched down and began to gently stroke its head. The yellow-brown dog took the opportunity to nuzzle against my leg.
"Now that we've found the dog, what do you plan to do?" Hu Fang asked from behind me.
"Ask your big brother Shen Xu; look how close he is with this dog now," Li Zhisheng replied.
Seeing them throw the question back at me left me puzzled. Initially, I thought this dog might be the source of our problems and that killing it would free us from this time-stopping curse.
But now, seeing how docile it was, I couldn't bring myself to do anything.
"Hey there, doggy, do you know any way to get out of here?" I found myself asking the dog helplessly, even questioning my own sanity.
To my surprise, the dog seemed to understand me. It slowly backed up a few steps and barked twice in my direction before suddenly lunging at Li Zhisheng and Hu Fang.
Startled, I quickly grabbed it. Hu Fang jumped back in shock and exclaimed, "Is this dog trying to hurt us? Maybe we should ignore it and think of another way."
Li Zhisheng pondered for a moment and said, "It seems this dog can't help us get out of here; we need to come up with another plan. Let it go..."
With a sigh, I replied, "Alright then. I thought we might have found a clue, but it turns out we're still empty-handed." I gently patted the Yellow Dog's neck before standing up to leave with Hu Fang and Li Zhisheng.
"So what are you going to do now?" I asked as I followed behind them.
"We definitely need to come up with a plan; it's just not going to be easy. How about we go back to the tunnel and see if we can find the location of the Underworld Gate? If we can locate the door, we might make some progress," Li Zhisheng said without looking back.
At that moment, we heard a few more barks from behind us. Turning around, I saw the Yellow Dog standing at the tunnel entrance, barking furiously at us.
"Stop barking and go away," I waved my hand at the dog, signaling it to leave. However, it showed no intention of departing, continuing to stand there and yapping.
Seeing this, I decided to ignore it and turned back to Li Zhisheng. "Didn’t we just wander around the tunnel for a while? We didn’t find anything at all. I’m afraid going back would be pointless."
"It’s different this time. I plan to get out of the car and search carefully in the tunnel, not just wandering aimlessly like before."
Given Li Zhisheng's determination, and since I had no better plan, I had no choice but to comply, though deep down I felt that searching again would be futile.
I kept these thoughts to myself, hoping that Li Zhisheng was right. After that, we returned to the car. At this point, Yao Long asked us as we came back, "How did it go? Did you find the dog?"
I thought to myself, aren’t you supposed to have strong perception? Didn’t you hear the dog barking so loudly just now? But then I realized he was probably too focused on the Death Apostle to notice.
"We found it, but there’s been no progress. Now Li Zhisheng wants to go back and check the tunnel again in hopes of discovering something…" I started the car and headed back to the tunnel once more.
By now, we had gone back and forth three or four times in a short span of time; I had memorized the route to the tunnel by heart.
After a moment, we arrived at the tunnel. This time, I parked the car inside the tunnel, so Yao Long got out with us to help search.
Facing the white tunnel walls, I looked up at the ceiling about three or four meters high. Although there were two rows of lights for illumination, the interior still felt quite dark.
I reached out and slapped the white tunnel wall; the sound echoed throughout the roughly four hundred meters of tunnel. The noise sounded solid, and the walls didn’t seem like they concealed any hidden passages.
"How are we supposed to find anything? I can’t feel anything right now. Yao Long, Li Zhisheng, can you use Soul Burial and Void Spirit to sense anything?" I asked the three who were searching.
They didn’t seem to have a better method than mine either; they were also feeling along the walls with their hands. Hearing my question, Yao Long replied, "Nothing. I can’t feel anything at all. Are you sure this method is really effective? With Mr. Death in his current state, we don’t have much time to waste."
"Didn't I tell you that the Death Apostle should be fine now? Don't worry. If we can find a way out, he will definitely return to normal!" Li Zhisheng said.
With that, everyone began to search diligently, and I didn't dare to slack off. I followed their example, constantly feeling along the walls with my hands. As my fingers brushed against the surface, clouds of dust fell from the walls, making it hard for me to keep my eyes open and causing me to cough repeatedly.
However, in this empty tunnel, it seemed that only my coughing echoed; I couldn't tell if they had already covered their mouths and noses to avoid the dust.
After searching for a long time, my arms were sore from holding them up for so long. "Huh..." I let out a long breath, blowing away the dust in front of me, then lowered my hands and shook them to relieve the soreness.
Just as I was resting, I suddenly heard Li Zhisheng's voice coming from deeper within. He called out urgently, "Shen Xu! Come here quickly! I think I've found something!"
Upon hearing this, I wasted no time and hurried over to where Li Zhisheng was.
When I reached him, I found that he was standing next to the tunnel wall, and beside him was a slightly ajar door emanating a faint black-purple glow...
