"No, no, no!" I cried out in pain and fear, my voice echoing with despair.
"Hey, Shen Xu! Wake up! What's wrong with you?" Suddenly, I heard Li Zhisheng's voice beside me, accompanied by a gentle shake of my body.
"Don't!" I shouted, jolting upright from my seat. I was drenched in sweat, my eyes darting around in terror. The driver stood before me, sighing as he patted my shoulder. "Buddy, you had a nightmare. It's understandable... Alright, we've arrived at the station. Time to get off."
After hearing this, I wiped the sweat from my face and glanced back at Hu Fang, Li Zhisheng, and the still unconscious Death Apostle.
"You just had a dream; everything is fine now," Li Zhisheng reassured me.
"A dream?" For a moment, I couldn't shake off the shock from earlier; my thoughts were still muddled.
Before Li Zhisheng and Hu Fang could respond, the driver spoke again. "Alright, you all need to get off now. I'm leaving." With that, he turned away with a grim expression.
"Let's get off first," Li Zhisheng said and helped Hu Fang lift the Death Apostle toward the door. I followed closely behind them, occasionally patting my forehead and muttering to myself, "Was it really just a dream…?"
As we stepped off the vehicle, I looked up at the sky. A beam of morning light was spilling over the horizon, heralding the rising sun.
At that moment, Hu Fang abruptly said to me, "He’s dead."
"Who? Who died?" I quickly asked.
"Have you forgotten already? The passenger from last night. The driver found him dead when we stopped just now and called for a doctor. He died from heart paralysis; he was taken away before you woke up," Hu Fang explained, her tone somewhat somber.
In truth, I wasn't surprised by what Hu Fang said. After all, I had anticipated this outcome the moment I made my decision. Yet guilt and self-blame still lingered in my heart.
"You might not know this, but I had already discussed it with Li Zhisheng before making my decision; you just weren't there at the time. I really..."
Before I could finish, Hu Fang interrupted me. "I know; you don't have to explain. You did it for the safety of the majority. I understand—truly understand. It's just hard to watch someone die right in front of you; it's unavoidable to feel upset. I'm fine; I don't blame you..." Her tone remained heavy.
"Alright, alright, let's not dwell on this anymore. Where should we go now?" Li Zhisheng interjected quickly to lighten the mood.
After listening, I sighed and pondered for a moment. "Right now, we have no way to fight back against Yang Master; our only option is to seek refuge. The best sanctuary I can think of is the Shidao. Let's go find them."
"Well, that's all we can do. After all, you sent Mo Shu Old Senior a whole cart of Jujube; he will definitely take us in. If that doesn't work, we can always send another cart!" Li Zhisheng said with a smile, trying to lighten the mood, but it was futile. Hu Fang's face remained grim, showing no signs of amusement.
"It's getting a bit chilly; we should hurry up. As for whether Mo Shu Senior will take us in, we'll see when we get there," I said calmly while wrapping my clothes tighter around me.
After that, we didn't linger and made our way to the local train station, where we chose the earliest train to head towards the city where I lived.
...
After a long and tiring journey, we finally arrived at our destination. Once we got off the train, I borrowed Hu Fang's phone and called Meng Zhuang to come pick us up.
It wasn't long before Meng Zhuang appeared in a black sedan. He stepped out of the car with his sturdy frame and smiled as he saw me. "Shen! What happened to you all? How did things end up like this?"
"Ah, it's a long story. First, take us to the rental house in the suburbs; I need to grab some things before you take us to Yunpo Mountain," I replied.
Upon hearing this, Meng Zhuang cheerfully agreed and helped Death Apostle into the back seat of the car. The remaining three of us followed suit and we headed towards the rental house in the suburbs.
During the drive, Meng Zhuang updated me on the company's performance and asked when I could return to help out since things had been quite hectic lately.
I smiled wryly and replied, "I want to return to normal life as soon as possible too, but right now we're not in control of our situation. You'll have to bear with it for a bit longer. If it gets too tough, let Manager Wu transfer some staff from the branch office over; if I remember correctly, their business hasn't been doing well."
"You don't know..." Meng Zhuang said. "Recently, I'm not sure what's going on, but we've had a lot of business coming in. The branch is so busy they can hardly keep up! If you hadn't asked me to pick you up, I'd still have two clients waiting for me."
As he spoke, Meng Zhuang picked up a folder from inside the car and showed it to me. I took the folder and flipped through it briefly.
The two clients he mentioned were actually some of my previous close connections; I had helped their companies quite a bit in the past. It seemed they wanted to give back by bringing some business to my company now that it was thriving.
Thinking about this made me feel somewhat gratified. I murmured softly to myself, "In today's society, there aren't many people who know how to be grateful; it's nice... Meng Zhuang, you'll have to work hard during this time. I'll call Manager Wu later to check on things and see if I can help you out."
"Then I would trouble you, otherwise we will really be exhausted to the point of collapse..." Meng Zhuang said.
Hearing this, I forced a smile, thinking to myself, "Aren't I in the same situation..." With that thought, I put the folder back.
Afterward, I chatted with Meng Zhuang about the company's recent developments, and soon we arrived at the rented house on the outskirts.
After parking, I asked the others to wait in the car while I went upstairs to grab some daily necessities. As I made my way up alone, I noticed that the front door was wide open. The inside had already been ransacked; not only that, but some valuable furniture had also been taken away.
"It seems that it wasn't just Yang Master’s people who came by; there must have been a group of thieves as well..." I sighed. I went inside to gather some daily items and clothes, and also took a few things from Hu Fang and Li Zhisheng's rooms before preparing to leave.
Just as I was about to step out of my room, I accidentally kicked something among a pile of clutter on the floor. Feeling something unusual, I bent down to clear away the mess and picked up what I had kicked—it was my phone that I had forgotten before leaving.
"It looks like Yang Master’s people came by and turned the house upside down; those thieves must not have found my phone..." With that thought, I pressed the power button, and the screen lit up. At that moment, a notification popped up on my phone screen stating, "Eighteen unread Text Messages..."
