Tao Star Nine Souls
“What’s wrong with it?” The Death Apostle took a few steps back, possibly worried that the Yellow Dog might suddenly go wild and hurt him.
“I don’t think it will harm you…” I looked at the Yellow Dog in my arms and, for some reason, those words slipped out, as if I could sense why it was barking so furiously.
The feeling was fleeting, a mere flash in my mind, and even I couldn’t clearly understand why.
“I think it’s just barking because of the evil energy from the Soul Burial inside Li Zhisheng,” I continued.
Upon hearing this, the Death Apostle looked at me with a puzzled expression. “How do you know?”
I glanced at him. “Honestly, I’m not sure; it’s just a feeling, like I somehow know.”
After listening, the Death Apostle responded meaningfully, “I hope you’re right.”
Meanwhile, Li Zhisheng seemed oblivious to our conversation, completely immersed in his book, not even registering the Yellow Dog’s intense barking.
After a moment, Li Zhisheng finished his examination, retracted the power of Soul Burial, turned to me and shook his head helplessly. “Nothing. Still nothing has been discovered. It seems Soul Burial isn’t effective. You’ve regained your strength now; why don’t you try using the power of Void Spirit…” As he spoke, he handed me the Soul Mirror.
Just as I was about to reach out to take it, an unusual sensation washed over me. It felt as if someone had activated the power of Void Spirit within me; that power was filled with coldness, sending chills down my spine.
“Wait!” I exclaimed. “Is there someone else here?!”
Li Zhisheng seemed to sense something too; he abruptly stood up from his seat and scanned the surroundings warily. “Hmm, I feel it too… But who is this person? Besides you with the power of Void Spirit, who else could be here? Mo Yun? That’s impossible…”
As Li Zhisheng pondered aloud, a name suddenly flashed in my mind, and I exclaimed simultaneously with him: “Hu Fang?!”
We exchanged glances; I set the Yellow Dog down and turned to the Death Apostle. “This is bad; something might have happened to Hu Fang! Where is her room? We need to check!”
“I know; follow me!” Without waiting for the Death Apostle's response, Li Zhisheng dashed toward a door on the right side of the hall.
The three of us didn’t dare to waste any time and hurriedly made our way to the door. Li Zhisheng led the way and tentatively pushed against the door. Finding it locked, he called out loudly into the room, “Hu Fang! Is that you? Are you in there?”
As the shout echoed in, the presence of the Void Spirit within the room immediately weakened, but did not vanish. Soon after, Hu Fang's voice came through, "I'm in here, I'm sleeping. What's going on?"
"That's not right. With such a strong presence of the Void Spirit, how could she possibly be sleeping?!" I muttered to myself, feeling something was off. I called out into the room, "Hu Fang, are you okay? Open the door; we need to talk."
"I'm fine, don't worry about me. I want to sleep now; let's talk later. I'm tired."
Hearing Hu Fang's response, I was certain it was her voice, but her words only deepened my suspicions.
"Should we go in and check? What if something happened to her..." Death Apostle, unable to sense the Void Spirit's presence, seemed to feel that something was amiss from Hu Fang's reply.
"Alright, step aside. I'll break down the door!" I said as I prepared to charge at it with my body.
But just as I took two steps back, Li Zhisheng raised his hand to stop me. "You're in good shape; don't use brute force. Let me handle this." With that, Li Zhisheng activated his Soul Burial again, intending to use its power to shoulder-barge the door open.
Just as he focused on the door and prepared to rush forward, we heard a creak as the old door swung open. Hu Fang stood at the entrance wearing a red leather jacket, looking at us with surprise. "What’s up? Why are you looking for me?"
Seeing this, Li Zhisheng quickly halted his momentum and nearly collided with Hu Fang.
I took a moment to scrutinize her and noticed she was dressed for going out, her hair neatly draped over her shoulders—definitely not someone preparing for bed. It was clear she had been lying.
"Hu Fang, we sensed something unusual in your room. Be honest with us—what happened?" I asked directly.
"Nothing much; I was just lying down getting ready for bed when you all showed up..." she replied.
"At a time like this, there's no point in lying. Just tell us what’s going on." I cut through her words, and she fell silent.
Seeing her standing there at the door with a flickering gaze and no response, I continued, "Right now, things are chaotic within Yang Master. Er Ye is attempting a coup to seize leadership; even Mo Shu Senior couldn't stop him. And we don't know if the former Sun Warrior Leader has the ability to withstand Er Ye. If Er Ye hasn't succeeded yet, we might still have some time; but if that ruthless Er Ye has already taken control, we could be facing danger at any moment."
"If you notice anything unusual or feel something is off, you must tell us. Otherwise, if danger strikes and you’ve kept this hidden from us, it could put all of us in jeopardy..."
Perhaps my tone was too severe; upon hearing this, Hu Fang lowered her head silently and murmured, "It's not as serious as you think; I just... just..."
"What's going on?! Hurry up!" I said, feeling a bit anxious as I grabbed her.
Seeing this, Hu Fang seemed startled and appeared somewhat afraid, remaining silent and staring at me with terrified eyes.
Death Apostle, noticing Hu Fang's fright, quickly pulled me back and asked in a calmer tone, "Don't be scared. Shen Xu is just too anxious. Don't blame him. If there's something to say, say it. Shen Xu is right; we are indeed facing unprecedented danger. Otherwise, he wouldn't be so eager to eliminate Er Ye. He is also afraid that more people will die at Er Ye's hands."
After Death Apostle finished speaking, there was a moment of silence among us before Hu Fang finally spoke up, "I really didn't mean to deceive you. I just wanted to contribute and not be a burden to you."
"All this time, it's been Shen Xu, Li Zhisheng, and Yao Long protecting me while I've done nothing. Several times, you almost got hurt because of me. This time, I know the stakes are high. To avoid being a psychological burden and to keep you from worrying about me, I hid away to practice mastering Void Spirit..."
"Because I know that if I don't find a way to help you this time, there may not be another chance. Especially you, Shen Xu; you know how I feel about you..."
Before Hu Fang could finish, I pulled her into my arms tightly, holding her close and whispering in her ear, "I know..."
