Have you heard the legend of the "Thirteenth Step" among the seven great mysteries of the campus?
Originally, it was said that there was a staircase with twelve steps in a certain school. If one were to climb it at midnight while counting the steps, an extra step would mysteriously appear. Those who reached the thirteenth step would suddenly vanish without a trace...
This eventually evolved into the urban legend of "counting stairs."
After all, the number of steps in any building is fixed; they cannot just change unexpectedly.
But what if, while counting, one suddenly found that a step was missing or that an extra step had appeared?
It is said that this indicates a distortion in space, and one could inadvertently step into a world that does not belong to them...
An entrance to another world! What an enticing notion!
Filled with longing for this so-called otherworld, I decided to give it a try!
So, on a day when I was home alone, ensuring there would be no interruptions, I rolled up my sleeves and prepared for my personal experiment.
That said, I wasn’t quite brave enough to do this alone at midnight. Instead, I chose an afternoon when everyone else was out, approaching the "counting stairs" game with a playful mindset.
I had confirmed beforehand that my staircase had seventeen steps.
Taking a deep breath, I slowly began my ascent—
“One, two, three…”
Upwards, exactly seventeen steps.
Now, turning around to continue—
“One, two, three…”
Downward, there were exactly seventeen steps.
Nothing happened.
After going back and forth four or five times, I suddenly felt a bit bored.
Although this outcome was something I had long anticipated, I still felt a twinge of reluctance...
Why not just close my eyes and count this time?
After all, I was in my own home; I had walked these stairs countless times. I was so familiar with them that even walking with my eyes closed wouldn’t pose any danger.
Having made up my mind, I decided to start over.
I closed my eyes and stepped onto the stairs again.
“One, two, three…”
Perhaps because I couldn’t see, my movements were more cautious. To be safe, I held onto the handrail as I ascended.
“Sixteen, seventeen.”
I opened my eyes; nothing had happened.
Hmm, good. Now it was time to go down.
I turned around, grasped the handrail, closed my eyes, and slowly took a step—
“One, two, three…”
As I reached around the eighth or ninth step, I suddenly collided with something without any warning.
"Ugh..." Who was the fool standing in front of me without a sound?
I stumbled slightly, quickly steadied myself, and opened my eyes to see who I had bumped into—
The stairwell was empty.
I stood there in shock for a moment, then suddenly remembered that no one was home; it was impossible for anyone to be playing such a prank.
Even if it were a prank, there was no way someone could have hidden themselves so quickly. After all, it only took a few seconds for me to steady myself and open my eyes. There was no way someone could have concealed themselves that fast, especially since this was a stairwell where you could see everything at a glance—there was nowhere to hide. Besides, I hadn't heard any footsteps...
But that impact just now definitely felt like I had bumped into someone...
So, I hurried downstairs to check the entrance, confirming there were no signs of the door being opened. Everyone was still out, and I made sure there was no one else in the house.
It really was just me at home...
So what exactly did I bump into just now?
