The spotlight focused on the seemingly defenseless Uterus Skeleton Mutants. Just as Xiao Qiang and the others let their guard down, a nimble Uterus Mutant suddenly leaped towards Wen Zhaoqi, who was controlling the angle of the lights.
In an instant, before anyone could intervene, its claw lightly grazed his neck. As the area engulfed in flames expanded, a piercing scream erupted, and a thick stream of dark red blood gushed from Wen Zhaoqi's neck.
The spotlight shifted, revealing a corner of pitch-black space.
Xiao Qiang's heart skipped a beat—Lin Yu panicked and hurriedly adjusted the light stand. A Uterus Skeleton Mutant, faster than her movements, had already grasped one-third of the light stand.
Fortunately, her short dagger had not left her hand. Without hesitation, she lunged at the white, emaciated creature clinging to the light stand, delivering rhythmic slashes—cut! cut! cut! Each strike was precise. The sharpness of her dagger was no joke. The Uterus Skeleton Mutant that had been struck sprayed out filthy blood, its arm now shortened by a segment, proving its ferocity.
The Uterus Mutated Skeleton had its right arm severed by Lin Yu's sharp dagger, leaving only a bone spur that sprayed blood. Unfazed by the pain, it quickly reached out with its left claw in an attempt to grab her dagger.
In that split second, Xiao Qiang struck with a Thunder Slash. Her fingers aligned like a blade as she swept her palm across with tremendous force aimed at its neck. Lin Yu hesitated for just a moment before thrusting her dagger into the chest cavity of the Skeleton Mutant. The force of Xiao Qiang's attack was not to be underestimated; there was a sharp cracking sound as the head of the Uterus Skeleton Mutant that lunged at them suddenly snapped off and fell to one side, its bulging eyes glaring fiercely at them both.
The spotlight realigned itself as more Skeleton Mutants approached with horrific screams. In an instant, brilliant flames engulfed the remaining Uterus Skeleton Mutants, allowing Lin Yu, Wu Yi, and Xiao Qiang to finally exhale in relief.
However, when they regained their composure, they realized that the Uterus Skeleton Mutant whose head had just been severed was nowhere to be found. Logically speaking, a headless Skeleton Mutant shouldn't be able to crawl away on its own—especially one that was heavily pregnant with Little Skeleton Mutants.
While clearing the scene, Xiao Qiang specifically instructed everyone to locate that headless yet mysteriously escaped Skeleton Mutant.
Hansen and Wu Yi went to assist the madman who had his eyes gouged out by a Skeleton Mutant while the rest searched for the missing mutant. They scoured every nook and cranny but found nothing—it was eerie!
Xiao Qiang's previously calm demeanor began to unravel again due to the missing Skeleton Mutant.
Matt returned to fetch Professor R.
Professor R's injured arm seemed to have complications; he felt unwell and was showing signs of a high fever.
With no sign of the headless Skeleton Mutant and everyone feeling exhausted, Xiao Qiang felt as if her body had fallen apart—she had no strength left, like a deflated balloon.
Lin Yu was very worried about Xiao Qiang. Looking at his pale face, tears almost welled up in her eyes. "Can you hold on?" she asked, rushing forward to support him.
"I'm fine, it's all in the past now," Xiao Qiang wanted to say, "As long as you're okay," but he couldn't bring himself to say it—he felt the words were ambiguous and too direct—especially with Wu Yi watching them.
Wu Yi didn't seem to be in a much better state. Seeing them leaning on each other stirred a small feeling of emotion within him. He felt a pang of jealousy; Lin Yu had completely overlooked his feelings, not even offering a single insincere greeting.
Lin Yu suggested to Aunt Zouxia that they find a quiet place for Xiao Qiang to rest.
However, Xiao Qiang was reluctant to rest there; he felt something was off about the place. Although the Skeleton Mutants had mostly been eliminated, he still harbored psychological resistance towards the environment and other factors.
"Let's go check on Zhao Liya and then prepare to head back."
"Is that really your decision?" Lin Yu asked in surprise. She felt there were still things that needed clarification, like why the madman was afraid of Matt and why Wu Yi and Xiao Qiang had become so weak after staying there for a while.
"I have no objections."
"If we stay any longer, we might never return to the future world. Here, problems arise endlessly, and some impure-minded individuals keep causing trouble. If we continue to defy the laws of nature for too long, we'll be stuck here."
"But I have so many unanswered questions; going back would leave me uneasy," Lin Yu said, her voice almost breaking.
"What do you want to ask?"
Lin Yu looked around. "I want to see the madman..."
Xiao Qiang paused for a moment in thought before nodding. "Let's go! But we should stick together."
"Okay." Lin Yu nodded and linked arms with the sullen Wu Yi, giving him a gentle smile. "Let's go! Once we figure things out, we'll leave this place."
Xiao Qiang understood Lin Yu's intentions; without Matt and the Professor R around, it was indeed the right time to search for suspicious clues. With Wen Zhaoqi dead, only Hansen, Zou Xia, and a few other less influential interns remained.
Hansen was chatting with the madman when Xiao Qiang and the others entered, heading straight for the point, saying they wanted to speak with the madman privately. Hansen forced a smile and quickly got up to leave.
The robot Amy waved her clawed arm, trying to be friendly towards the three of them—she followed Hansen out, gliding on her wheels.
The madman remained silent, no matter how Lin Yu questioned him—
"What's wrong with you? Didn't you hint before that you wanted to tell us something?" she asked, staring intently at the madman. His eyelids blinked in a pattern: one, four, seven—after a moment of contemplation, she suddenly realized without deliberately turning to look behind her; it was clear to her. The madman's blinking meant there were cameras in the walls.
Lin Yu leaned closer to Xiao Qiang and Wu Yi, lowering his voice. "He says there are cameras above."
Zou Xia brought over some late-night snacks for them to fill their stomachs and replenish their energy. She kindly suggested that Xiao Qiang take a rest. The latter hesitated, thinking about the strange events that had occurred previously; he was unwilling to leave Lin Yu and Wu Yi even for a moment. However, he was indeed very fatigued; after holding on for so long, he felt dizzy with every step he took.
Lin Yu wanted to communicate with the madman, but he was wary of the cameras—
Xiao Qiang appeared nonchalant but suddenly agreed to rest, insisting it had to be in the monitoring room—this was against Professor R's regulations. But then he thought again; it was Professor R who set the rules and was also the first to break them.
Xiao Qiang's actions clearly indicated that he had lost trust in their group, but they indeed owed him an apology. With that thought in mind, she immediately agreed to his request without further consideration.
