"Wind can't be in trouble; I still need to fight alongside her," Xiao Qiang muttered to himself and then said to Yun, "Let me go quickly. The Serpent Woman shouldn't have gone far; there's nothing but wasteland outside, and she has nowhere to hide."
Yun rarely spoke, silently walking away. Before long, they really let Xiao Qiang go. It was exactly 3 AM, and a few stars were drunkenly sprawled across the vast sky. It was deep autumn, and the cold wind outside howled like ice, stinging the skin.
Xiao Qiang wore wide-brimmed sunglasses, his entire figure leaning against a Harley Davidson C205 motorcycle. He slammed down on the throttle, and the motorcycle let out a deep roar, shooting off like an arrow released from a bow.
He kept accelerating, the speed climbing from 80 to 240 miles per hour. A light shadow raced from north to south, dashing past and leaving behind a cloud of dust that gradually faded in the cold wind.
No matter how fast the Serpent Woman escaped, could she really outrun a motorcycle going 240 miles per hour? Things seemed truly strange. When Xiao Qiang spent half an hour chasing them to the riverbank leading to Area A5, he still didn't see any sign of the Serpent Woman.
Could Plum Blossom Rain fly through the sky? Or did she have some external tool assisting her in evading capture? Not finding the Serpent Woman meant Xiao Qiang had to return and inform Yun that it was no longer safe here.
Perhaps the Serpent Woman had some sinister plot involving Area A5, deliberately getting close to him to find Human Blood resources!
Things weren't that simple; not capturing the Serpent Woman couldn't clear his suspicion. The wind couldn't speak for Xiao Qiang either. Before he could get out of the car to explain, he was once again caught by Yun's people. The situation developed even worse than before; they actually began searching his vehicle and his personal belongings.
Weapons, leftover food, spare clothes. Finally, they found a compact pen. Xiao Qiang shook his arm nervously and said urgently, "Don't—don't press anything."
The more he said that, the more curious the guy with the pen became. He didn't believe him and pressed each tiny button that looked as small as a grain of rice one by one...
Xiao Qiang secretly smiled; this was his usual tactic of provocation. Matt should soon receive the positioning signal from the laser tracker; he would send someone to pick him up.
However, before Matt arrived, he still needed to find a way to gain their trust and obtain information about Area A5.
"This place isn't safe. Wind and I will stay behind; you all need to move to a secure location. There’s food and plenty of water there—trust me..."
The kid who still didn't realize he was in trouble casually played with the seemingly intricate but not very fun laser tracker pen in his hand, rolling his eyes at Xiao Qiang and saying, "Why should we trust you?"
"Because I am a warrior."
"Hmph!"
"What he said is true," Yun suddenly spoke after a long silence. "Actually, when you came here, you sensed that evil was approaching. At that time, you were distracted comforting your sister and overlooked the Serpent Woman..."
“Pah! Don't mention the Serpent Woman…” Xiao Qiang felt uncomfortable just thinking about the Serpent Woman's forked tongue, which had once had an intimate encounter with him. “Yun, think about it. If I really had ill intentions, would I need to come back here and present myself for punishment?”
“Sister, look?”
Feng's facial injuries were severe, swollen to a great extent. In just one night, she had become haggard and aged. She glanced at Xiao Qiang and nodded, saying, “I promise you, he is a good person.”
Yun maneuvered her wheelchair ahead, followed by Xiao Qiang and Feng.
They stopped in front of the Mountain Deity, where the Stone-Piled Human-Shaped Three Gods stood. The faith emanated from deep within their hearts. Xiao Qiang observed closely the pure and resolute gaze that Yun displayed; this was the power of belief. Compared to the restless and mundane society outside, he felt that spiritual fulfillment was more important than material wealth.
Yun asked Xiao Qiang, “Will you marry my sister?”
The latter was taken aback. What kind of time was this to discuss such matters? However, having just gained his freedom, he did not want to be bound again in a rough manner. Yet he could not betray his conscience by telling a deceitful lie.
“I can't.”
Feng's face was covered with a thick layer of some medicinal powder. Xiao Qiang could only catch a glimpse of the dried and cracked powder shaking; he could not see her true facial changes at that moment.
“Why can't you?” Yun knew this would be the outcome. By asking Xiao Qiang directly, she hoped to dissuade her infatuated sister from her feelings. Although this approach was cruel, it might at least help her realize the truth sooner.
“She is someone I like, but she is already taken.” Feng felt satisfied with Xiao Qiang's words; after all, he had liked her before, and that was enough for her. She gave him a grateful smile, but the medicinal powder fell away in flakes—perhaps because her smile looked quite painful.
Yun understood her sister's suffering but lacked the ability to free her from such torment.
“Did you come to learn about Area A5?” Finally returning to the main topic, this was exactly what Xiao Qiang had been hoping to discuss.
“Yes.”
Yun looked at Feng with deep affection and gently said, “Sister, you tell him.”
“Okay.” Feng nodded and began recounting: “You already know how it started; my sister said she wasn't feeling well and wanted to stay home, but Ronnie and his friends kept calling to urge us. So I insisted on taking her to sing at Pirate Ship…” This was a painful memory that had to be revisited. Tears shimmered in Feng's eyes as she recounted everything that had happened—
Ronnie's friends were playing outdoors when they saw a giant fight descending from the sky. They brought this heavy fight home and delivered it to the police station in Area Five that night. Then something unknown happened afterward; the next day, scenes of humans turning against each other emerged.
The eyes of those people turned terrifying, blood-red, and they lunged at anyone they saw, driven by a bloodthirsty instinct. At that time, we were unaware of the danger. Someone invited us to hang out, hoping to cheer Yun up, so we took her along—
As a result, we were attacked by a group of individuals who looked no different from humans. We were so frightened that we lost our senses and ran in all directions. When we finally realized Yun was missing and returned, we found her pinned to the ground, her legs bitten and bleeding profusely.
Without a second thought, Ronnie and I rushed over, along with Uncle Li—Windswept was in tears—
“Take your time,” Xiao Qiang said as he pulled out a clean disposable tissue from his pocket and handed it to her to wipe her tears away.
“A burly man with blood-red eyes helped us escape from those monsters,” she continued.
“Okay, go on.”
“She had a high fever, with no medicine, nothing at all. The people who managed to escape were terrified that Yun would turn into one of those monsters, so they…” Windswept’s voice suddenly grew frantic as he looked at Yun with pleading eyes and said, “Dear sister, regardless of what happens, I will always love you.”
Xiao Qiang seemed to grasp that Windswept had not finished his story: the people who escaped wanted to execute the half-conscious Yun! Indeed, what Windswept said next stunned both Yun and him.
“They threw Yun into the river… to let her fend for herself…”
