Descending into the basement, Xiao Qiang was struck by the sight before him. It was like a small arms factory, filled with high-end weaponry of all kinds. There were AK49 rifles and various unfamiliar individual firearms, an array of daggers, and compact portable rifles. D Golden Grenades, inflatable lighters, and more dazzled his eyes as he touched this and examined that, unable to resist their allure.
"Hey! Soldier, do you have faith?"
"Maybe!"
"What for?"
"To fight for peace." Xiao Qiang toyed with a small, exquisite dagger that resembled the one gifted to the wind. "Can it cut through iron like mud?"
Gui Ye didn't even lift his eyelids, casually replying, "Of course."
"What do you believe in?" Xiao Qiang sheathed the dagger into his boot and got straight to the point.
"Faith won't fill your belly or put money in your pocket. Money is a good thing; you need it to enjoy women and to eat..."
"Can you stop with this garbage talk?" At the mention of women, Xiao Qiang felt a wave of discomfort wash over him as he deeply missed Lin Yu. However, the situation demanded his full attention; Gui Ye seemed no easy opponent. With so many fine weapons around, it was clear that he couldn't have acquired them all by himself. He must have other accomplices.
The two awkward individuals found themselves at a loss for words until Xiao Qiang unexpectedly brought up Gui Ye's face. "Here, you can tell me what happened to your face."
At the mention of his face, half of Gui Ye's scarred visage twitched violently. "If I said it was cut open by a knife, would you believe me?"
Xiao Qiang silently nodded, "I believe you."
"But you probably wouldn't be interested in my background; let's skip that part." Gui Ye scratched his head, his murky old eyes showing signs of fatigue as he blinked thoughtfully. He began to recount the terrifying story of his past.
Gui Ye had once been a man of passion and righteousness; he had been idealistic and cynical. However, after being repeatedly toyed with by fate, he was ultimately abandoned by society and himself, becoming a hopeless vagrant with a tarnished character.
He dared to eat anything and do anything. He could sleep alone in a waiting room until dawn or curl up in the bushes along the roadside; if worse came to worst, a bridge underpass served as his most luxurious sleeping arrangement.
Gui Ye also sought out women—those who came looking for him at low prices, discarded by everyone else. Yet he had his principles; he would rather part with the few crumpled bills he had managed to save than entertain those contemptible women who sold themselves. Instead, he would cross his legs and drift into sweet dreams filled with beautiful faces and women he adored.
When the war broke out, he was terrified, running through a sea of fleeing people. Eventually, he was overwhelmed by the crowd, becoming a stepping stone underfoot, struggling to rise. Afterward, someone wearing a protective mask dragged him and tossed him into a pile of corpses, all stacked together in that room.
He lost track of how many days passed or who brought him into a cold room filled with medical equipment. He was placed on an operating table, perhaps thought to be dead, so no precautions were taken during the experiments conducted on him.
When someone picked up a chainsaw and began to saw open Gui Ye's left cheek, he was suddenly jolted awake by the pain—
The person using the chainsaw was startled when this corpse suddenly opened its eyes and screamed in agony, causing them to stumble back in terror. They knocked over other medical instruments behind them. Gui Ye gritted his teeth against the pain and climbed off the operating table, desperate to escape.
Little did he know that the operating room was under surveillance; as soon as Gui Ye woke up, someone had already seen him. They promptly informed the relevant authorities, and someone immediately ordered strong measures to eliminate this corpse that had suddenly come back to life.
A struggle was inevitable. Bloodied and battered, Gui Ye resembled a terrifying specter at that moment. Half of his face hung with flesh that had not completely been severed, revealing exposed bone beneath the blood-red skin.
His appearance frightened everyone else in the laboratory. Coupled with his innate brute strength, he wielded the chainsaw used to cut open his cheek and swiftly dealt with the screaming female doctors and male physicians.
As Gui Ye approached the door, pounding on that damned iron door with all his might, a stream of pale yellow smoke erupted from above. The smoke was acrid and pungent, reminiscent of sulfur... Then his legs buckled, his vision blurred, and he collapsed onto the ground.
When he awoke again, he found himself lying among many decaying corpses. It was a deep trench where numerous discarded bodies had been thrown away.
"You... really are lucky," Xiao Qiang exclaimed in surprise, giving a thumbs-up in admiration before questioning further: "At that time, there was nuclear radiation; it didn't pose a threat to you?"
Gui Ye forced a bitter smile and shook his head in confusion. "The nuclear radiation in this area didn't cause significant harm. However, I've heard that in other places, it wasn't so fortunate. Some people died from nuclear radiation while others lived worse than death, developing cancer or tumors. I've even heard of girls giving birth at very young ages."
What Gui Ye described was already known to Xiao Qiang. "Those are all aftereffects caused by nuclear radiation. Some people who stayed too long in the nuclear radiation zone developed antibodies and immunity. But such lucky individuals are extremely rare; you can count yourself among them!"
"Yeah, I don't know if it's heaven's mercy or just fate making me suffer for a few more years!" Gui Ye said as his gaze fixated on the dagger Xiao Qiang was playing with.
It was strange that there were so many weapons in the basement yet he only seemed interested in that dagger. "Are there no suitable weapons for you here?" Gui Ye couldn't help but scan the room filled with Pride weapons, wondering why this guy hadn't found anything appealing among them.
"I don't need any," Xiao Qiang replied seriously as he looked at Gui Ye. "How many companions do you have?"
Gui Ye paused for a moment, as if deep in thought. "Aren't you my partner?"
Xiao Qiang stepped forward swiftly, pressing a dagger against Gui Ye's throat. "They say a dagger must taste blood before it can be drawn..." Gui Ye smirked, his hand deftly flicking to the side, evading the dagger. Suddenly, he felt something cold and hard pressing against his waist.
"Same to you."
"Gui Ye, tell me the truth. How many partners do you have?" Xiao Qiang resumed his serious demeanor, glancing at his watch. The hour hand and other functions seemed to have stopped moving since they emerged from the pond.
"Alright! Let's go meet them." Gui Ye's probing gaze lingered on Xiao Qiang's face for a few seconds. He thought to himself: This kid seems to be no ordinary person.
They exited the basement, and outside it was still dark.
Gui Ye instructed Xiao Qiang to wait in the previous thicket while he went to inform the other partners about tonight's plan.
Retracing his steps, memories of Xiao Wu Yi's smiling face flooded his mind. Deep guilt tormented this iron-willed seven-foot man. With his speed, he quickly returned to the hospital thicket, reaching the designated spot in no time.
The entrance of the hospital was quiet; aside from the areas illuminated by lights, everything else was shrouded in darkness. Xiao Qiang had grown accustomed to this darkness, but when two unusually bright beams of light swept through the shadows accompanied by a thunderous roar, it caught his attention.
