Dark clouds covered the sky, the heavens as black as ink, with stars hidden from view. On this desolate night, a light drizzle fell, shrouding the surroundings in a veil of white mist. A faint, sour odor lingered in the air. Glancing at the time, early morning was approaching. Logically, the night rain should have washed away the dust left by the day, revealing emerald greens and stunning landscapes.
Unfortunately, at that moment, Xiao Qiang and his companions caught a whiff of the unusual sour smell, causing their moods to shift dramatically. A sense of unease crept into their hearts; this sour odor felt all too familiar...
Wu Yi looked up, pausing in place as he gazed at the droplets falling from the night sky.
Seeing his dazed expression, Xiao Qiang shook his head in disbelief. "Earlier, Gui Ye mentioned Acid Rain. It seems he was right. We can't waste any more time; let's hurry."
Wu Yi lowered his head and let his tongue taste a drop of rain that had finally landed in his mouth, savoring it carefully—internally exclaiming: Damn! It really is sour? What’s going on? Is it Acid Rain falling from the sky?
The two of them moved closer to the hospital along the same path, intending to check out the basement one by one. As the saying goes, there’s no smoke without fire; according to what the child had said, the basement surely held more secrets than Gui Ye had mentioned.
Thinking of Gui Ye brought forth a wave of suspicion. How could a down-and-out vagabond possibly have cigars? And what did his flickering gaze conceal? In this day and age, was it truly just a coincidence to encounter Gui Ye?
Xiao Qiang couldn't make sense of it—he turned to Wu Yi and asked, "How do you know Gui Ye?"
Wu Yi grinned and replied, "I got knocked down in a fight and when I got back up, I saw a house not far away. I wanted to ask about things. Unexpectedly, that guy shot at me; luckily I dodged quickly or I wouldn't be here talking to you."
"Enough with the nonsense; get to the point," Xiao Qiang frowned while continuing to walk briskly.
"Those were all Gui Ye's lackeys. When they saw me, they looked like they’d seen a ghost—scared stiff and hiding in their holes. I had no choice but to bang on the door... but still couldn’t get in. Just as I was preparing for a second attempt, I spotted a sneaky figure on my way back—it turned out to be Gui Ye."
"And then he brought you to find me?"
"Not exactly; it seems Gui Ye has some loyalty. He repeatedly denied knowing someone like you unless I..."
"What about me?"
“It's nothing.” Wu Yi abruptly stopped speaking, not wanting Xiao Qiang to know too much about him. The genetic mutation that turned him into a half-beast was not the outcome he desired. He hated it, especially that bastard, Professor R, who had injected who-knows-what into his body at the DBL6 research facility, leading to this further evolution and mutation of his genes.
For now, Wu Yi could still control this mutation, but he was terrified. What if one day he couldn't suppress that bloodthirsty instinct? What would he do then?
This was also one of the reasons Wu Yi wanted to get close to Xiao Qiang; in his predictions, there would indeed come a day when only Xiao Qiang could control him...
“Is Lin Yu really okay?” Xiao Qiang asked with difficulty. The unparalleled pain in his heart tormented him again as he mentioned her name.
“You know Matt's abilities; she won't be harmed,” Wu Yi explained, though he felt uncertain inside.
“We should go to the hospital. Gui Ye is returning to meet up with his people...” Xiao Qiang said, suddenly stopping in his tracks. His dark eyes burned intensely in the night as he stared at Wu Yi and asked, “Did you kill Gui Ye's people?”
“Yeah, they deserved it—ungrateful fools,” Wu Yi replied.
“Can't you just lay low for a while? Is making enemies here beneficial for either of us?” Xiao Qiang snapped back angrily. Reflecting on Gui Ye's erratic behavior only heightened his unease.
He mentally retraced the events leading up to this moment, increasingly questioning Gui Ye's true identity.
Noticing Xiao Qiang's heavy thoughts, Wu Yi assumed he was still worried about Lin Yu and chose not to say much more. He discreetly quickened his pace, creating distance between them.
At that moment, the air seemed to freeze. The night remained still; the rain appeared to have stopped, and everything in the world stood motionless. Only two restless beings were running down an endless road.
The hospital entrance loomed ahead, its lights bright yet eerily quiet. The bodies sprawled on the ground had vanished, presumably removed by military personnel.
A red warning tape blocked the entrance, surprisingly without anyone on guard. To be cautious, Xiao Qiang and Wu Yi moved along the wall, trying their best not to leave their shadows in front of the cameras.
Despite the removal of the Living Dead, a strong Blood Stench still mingled with the scent of gunpowder in the air. Inside, the scene was much like that outside—a profound silence enveloped everything.
Wu Yi thought Xiao Qiang was being overly sensitive; in an environment without barriers, there was no need to be so cautious. They could charge straight in, seize the moment, and get the job done.
With this thought in mind, he boldly exposed himself under the bright lights and made a beeline for the basement.
Xiao Qiang wanted to stop him, but it was too late. He could only watch helplessly as Wu Yi's figure darted into the passageway—just then, an alarm suddenly blared, followed by the sound of hurried footsteps and the click of triggers from hidden positions.
"Damn!" Xiao Qiang exclaimed in shock, crouching down and quickly climbing through a window like a monkey.
Wu Yi, however, was not so fortunate. He never expected that in this seemingly empty hospital, there would be so many soldiers in camouflage uniforms lying in wait. He ran frantically, squeezing through any gaps he could find. His muscles were tense as he sprinted for his life… behind him were armed and trained soldiers; if he hesitated for even a moment, he would meet a grim fate.
With Wu Yi's reckless move came both advantages and disadvantages. At least Xiao Qiang felt his suspicions were correct—the basement of the hospital undoubtedly held undisclosed secrets; otherwise, there wouldn't be so many soldiers lying in ambush.
These soldiers in camouflage were beyond his ability to identify at that moment. In chaotic times, having wealth and power did not equate to dominance; one also needed strength (and advanced weaponry). Just like Gui Ye, a local thug who could dominate his territory—though Xiao Qiang didn't know who was backing him, he sensed a direct connection between them.
Was it Gui Ye who tipped off these soldiers about their trip to the hospital? Or did the soldiers come specifically to protect some secret?
