Gui Ye was resolute in response to Xiao Qiang's inquiry, confidently assuring them that the child was fine, putting their minds at ease.
"Take me to see."
"Well..." Gui Ye's small, murky gray-brown eyes darted around as he pondered how to address Xiao Qiang's skepticism. A sharp, cold glare shot his way, and he quickly lowered his head, awkwardly pretending to pick at some chicken remnants stuck in his teeth.
"Gui Ye, is your friend Professor R?"
Gui Ye looked confused. "Who is Professor R?" It seemed he had found an opportunity to deflect, feigning innocence as he glanced nervously at Wu Yi and Xiao Qiang. "Who is Professor R?"
Damn, could it be that he really isn't with Professor R? Xiao Qiang was taken aback. "What’s your friend's name?"
"Monet."
"Monet? Alright! You tell me how to get there." Xiao Qiang decided to team up with Wu Yi to find the child and hurry back to the future world. The affairs here didn’t seem to fall within his responsibilities or mission scope.
"If there hadn't been an outbreak of Living Dead incidents, this would be easy. But now..." Gui Ye's hesitance irritated Wu Yi, who was growing impatient.
"Come on, hurry up."
Seeing both of them anxious, Gui Ye thought to himself that since they were all likely doomed anyway, he might as well take a gamble and let these two deal with the Living Dead. If they died, it wouldn’t concern him; if they survived, then he wouldn’t have to worry about anything later.
"You'll need to cross several mountains to reach there, and these valleys are hiding many Living Dead. You must eliminate them before you can safely reach Monet's clinic."
"What the hell, are you trying to scare us?" Xiao Qiang felt like slapping Gui Ye's teeth out; it seemed like he was trying to negotiate terms with him. He grabbed Gui Ye by the collar. "What gives you the right to set conditions for me?"
"I'm not setting conditions! Do I look like I dare?" Gui Ye hurriedly protested, trying to appear calm and serious.
Xiao Qiang held back the furious Wu Yi and stepped closer. "If you try any tricks, I'll make sure to feed your heart to the dogs." He added, "Pack enough food and weapons; we’ll rest for a bit before heading out."
"Seriously? You actually believe Gui Ye’s words about there being many Living Dead in the Valley?"
Xiao Qiang sighed and nodded at Wu Yi. "Think about it; why haven’t we seen anyone along the way?"
"Right."
"That was when we were in the hospital, and many dead bodies buried underground crawled out, biting the remaining humans in the nearby mountain village. They have become part of the Living Dead, hiding in the Valley during the day, and their bloodthirsty activities begin at night."
Gui Ye was astonished by Xiao Qiang's intelligence and remarkable deductive skills, nodding repeatedly, "Wildfire's analysis is very accurate."
Wu Yi grinned, deliberately exposing his sharp teeth, and harshly scolded, "Shut up, scum." Gui Ye was so frightened that he dared not continue talking. He shifted his gaze to Xiao Qiang and voiced his doubts, "How could the dead bodies underground possibly crawl out?"
"Acid Rain," Xiao Qiang replied succinctly, leaving Wu Yi even more confused. Just as he opened his mouth to ask, he noticed Xiao Qiang's tone had softened as he looked at the suddenly silent Gui Ye and said, "Do you have anyone else? If not, gather them together; we can set off together."
"I wonder how the people in the warehouse are doing," Gui Ye said with his head drooping, filled with anticipation.
Wu Yi could no longer contain himself and exploded again, "Get lost! The people in your warehouse are all fucking dead!"
Xiao Qiang waved his hand to stop Wu Yi from causing further trouble. He solemnly patted Gui Ye on the shoulder and felt him trembling noticeably. Gui Ye anxiously glanced at him before quickly lowering his head.
"Gui Ye, let's speak plainly. Your intention in sending me to the hospital was actually to steal all data regarding Bioengineered Humans." Xiao Qiang shot Gui Ye a disdainful look, took a few steps back, then suddenly turned to stare at him and continued, "What you didn't expect was that Wu Yi's sudden appearance disrupted your plan. The result is that we are not as easily manipulated as you imagined. So you wanted us both to die without a burial place by deliberately saying that the military had already withdrawn from the hospital. You calculated that if we weren't killed by the lurking military in the hospital, we would likely be killed by the Bioengineered Humans in the basement. How do you think my analysis holds up?"
"Impossible, Wildfire! Don't spout nonsense."
"Who’s spouting nonsense?" Xiao Qiang pulled out the Blueprint and slapped it onto Gui Ye's face. "The Blueprint you gave me is all marked with wrong codes." He watched as Gui Ye hurriedly picked up the Blueprint that had fallen to the ground and continued assertively, "Aren't you curious how I discovered you hiding here?"
Gui Ye lowered his head in guilt...
Wu Yi became interested. "I want to know."
"Go away; don’t butt in," Xiao Qiang snapped before looking back at Gui Ye and said, "You really are heartless, letting Alpaca—a loyal follower—cover your escape from the Living Dead's pursuit while sacrificing him... Because of his panic and fear, there wasn't enough time to restore the debris to its original state."
Xiao Qiang's words made Gui Ye break into a cold sweat as he wiped himself repeatedly...
Wu Yi shook his head and crossed his arms to watch the show.
Xiao Qiang looked on with disdain!
Suddenly, a blinding light pierced through the surrounding silence, slanting in through a gap in the broken house before vanishing instantly. Then came the sound of startled birds taking flight. The three inside turned their attention outside and rushed toward the door.
The light was fleeting yet very real; it didn’t feel like an illusion... In broad daylight, there wouldn’t be any meteor shower resulting from a stellar explosion. It couldn’t be a meteorite either because after that flash of light, there was no sensation of tremors shaking the ground.
Xiao Qiang was the first to push open the door, a strong premonition washing over him that some otherworldly visitor, or someone like him, had arrived in this era.
"Let's go take a look. If we don't find anything unusual within ten miles, we'll regroup here," Xiao Qiang said to Gui Ye and Wu Yi.
Gui Ye hesitated, wary of the Living Dead.
"Don't be scared. The Living Dead haven't evolved to the point where they aren't afraid of light. Let's just do it!" Wu Yi exclaimed, shoving Gui Ye aside as he propelled himself forward. He headed west...
Under Xiao Qiang's watchful gaze, Gui Ye cautiously made his way south.
That left Xiao Qiang to explore the northeast alone.
The northeast was hilly and sparsely populated. The barren fields were overgrown with weeds and thorns, but through the wild grass, he could still see the winding mountain path rising ahead.
At the base of the mountain path was a Cedar Forest, the only area Xiao Qiang had yet to investigate. He trudged forward with weary steps, predicting that the outcome would not be favorable. Perhaps, as Wu Yi had said, he was being overly sensitive. His excessive concern for everything happening around him had cost him valuable time; maybe that flash of light had nothing to do with him at all...
Lost in thought, as he neared the Cedar Forest, he felt an urge to turn back... when suddenly a scream echoed from within the forest—a woman's voice. Xiao Qiang's heart raced in surprise as he hurriedly quickened his pace and dashed into the trees.
