Witnessing a monster devour humans, how could they possibly retreat willingly? After Gui Ye and the others had evacuated, Xiao Qiang pulled a D Grenade from the backpack slung over his shoulder. He nodded slightly to Wu Yi and Lin Yu, gesturing to discuss their plan of attack against the monster.
Though terrifying, the creature's massive body made it unable to move swiftly to deal with the three small figures that remained in place.
Having finished off its last meal, it fixed its fierce gaze on the three delectable snacks before it. With a powerful claw extended, it lunged at Xiao Qiang, but its claws struck empty air, thudding against the ground with a dull sound.
The three standing on the ground felt it tremble beneath them. Their bodies swayed slightly, losing balance... Xiao Qiang waited for the right moment, warming up before launching an attack.
The monster was muscular and heavy-set; each step it took seemed to shake the earth. Xiao Qiang found it strange that when the monster had attacked Gui Ye's two companions earlier, they hadn’t sensed its presence at all. Even though they had been drowsy, Wu Yi had been alert on patrol—surely he must have heard something!
The three nimbly darted between the monster's claws and legs, making it flail about like an ant on a hot pan, frantic and disoriented...
Xiao Qiang continued to speculate that perhaps the two had been caught off guard while attending to nature's call when the monster suddenly appeared behind them. They must have fallen to the ground, allowing the creature to easily capture them without expending much effort.
Yes, that must be it. Satisfied with his deduction, Xiao Qiang didn’t stop playing hide and seek with the monster. Suddenly, a gust of wind blew in from the southeast, swirling around them. The trees rustled ominously in its wake, as if a stampede of horses were approaching.
Heaven is on my side! Xiao Qiang focused intently and smiled at Wu Yi and Lin Yu, giving them a thumbs-up. With a kick of his legs, one hand gripped a dagger while the other held the grenade tightly. He spun in sync with the wind and leaped—shoving the grenade into the folds under the exhausted monster’s armpit while simultaneously pressing his dagger against the grenade's pin.
Lin Yu raised her hand and fired a bullet that zipped through the air like lightning, striking straight at the monster—boom! A plume of pink smoke erupted around it, followed by a splatter of flesh and blood as Xiao Qiang and his companions were caught off guard and drenched in crimson.
“Ugh! It stinks!” Lin Yu exclaimed.
Xiao Qiang looked at the obliterated remains of the monster. “Gui Ye’s treasure isn’t bad,” he remarked as he scanned the remnants left by the explosion. Approaching Lin Yu, he took her hand and asked, “You mentioned that monster was an R Virus-infected mutant. What does that mean?”
Lin Yu wiped some blood splatter from her face and frowned. “I’ve heard of R Virus long ago; it was classified military information not known by many. This type of creature is created using C-6 modified viruses; its effects are exactly opposite to C-6—it enhances the skeletal structure of corpses.”
“Skeletal structure?” Xiao Qiang recalled how he couldn’t break through that crimson crystal on the monster’s exterior. “Is that blood-colored crystal on its body actually bone?”
Wu Yi interjected angrily, “It must be some bored idiot who created this to sell to the military for profit.”
Xiao Qiang continued, “But this kind of modification mechanism—I’ve heard Matt mention it before. Modified beings often have many drawbacks; their enhanced skeletons can restrict movement and even turn them into mere skeletal statues.”
Lin Yu nodded and shared his speculation, "After the outbreak of the Nuclear War, the C-6 virus began to spread. The emergence of the Living Dead caused panic across the world, while those with ulterior motives secretly reveled in it. It was as if they saw a path to creating modified humans. Then, damn it, they took the R Virus they had researched and applied it to the bodies of soldiers who died in battle, resulting in what we just saw—the R Virus Modifier, that monster."
Wu Yi agreed with Lin Yu's assessment, saying, "Using soldiers' corpses for modification means that monster probably possesses all the advantages of both the Living Dead and the R Virus, right? The Living Dead are easy to kill because they are still controlled by human brains; as long as you sever their central nervous system, they become completely dead. But once they have skeletal armor, killing them becomes incredibly difficult."
"Humans truly bring ruin upon themselves," Xiao Qiang sighed before suddenly stopping in his tracks and turning to look behind him. He questioned, "The ladder is narrow and the journey perilous; how did such a massive monster get here?"
"What are you planning to do?" Lin Yu was not in favor of Xiao Qiang continuing to investigate the source of the monster. It was already close to midnight, and the road ahead was long and treacherous. Who knew how many dangers awaited them? "Jianjian is still waiting for us to return." Saying this made him wonder if he should abandon his naive thoughts. At least he believed this was a card to restrain him.
His words jolted Xiao Qiang from his thoughts. Last time he had trusted too much and handed Xiao Wu Yi over to Gui Ye. Now Little Pick-Up must not encounter any trouble; however, if they missed the opportunity to investigate the monster, its mystery would remain unsolved forever.
Xiao Qiang hesitated for a moment but decisively stopped in his tracks.
Lin Yu felt a surge of joy but also a bittersweet pang in his heart: Jianjian truly mattered more to him.
Wu Yi followed Xiao Qiang's decision and quietly waited for instructions.
Xiao Qiang stared seriously at Lin Yu. "You hurry back to the Campsite and protect Jianjian. We'll go take a look and return immediately."
"..." Lin Yu opened his mouth as if wanting to say something more, but Xiao Qiang had already turned and swiftly ran several meters away. Helplessly, he turned around in anger and walked off.
"The wind here is strange; it's swirling around in circles," Wu Yi tried to make conversation. This was his habit; he didn't like overly quiet environments.
"It's not the wind that's strange; it's the terrain here that creates small-scale tornadoes."
"Hey hey, Qiangzi, how do you know so much? I've seen American tornadoes; they can lift cars."
"Shh!" Xiao Qiang hushed him. "Turn off your light."
"You can't be serious!" Wu Yi wasn't afraid of the dark but had another reason; after turning off the light, he feared Xiao Qiang might see something he shouldn't. After hesitating for a moment, he reluctantly extinguished his headlamp.
In the dark, moving forward was not difficult for Xiao Qiang. For Wu Yi, it was nothing at all—let's not forget what kind of physical condition he was in now.
Xiao Qiang tilted his head and suddenly noticed a pair of green, glimmering lights beside him. He quickly realized that the lights came from Wu Yi.
"You really are a beast."
"You're not much better."
"Why's that?"
"Your eyes are blood red."
Xiao Qiang was secretly startled. "What?"
"Just kidding."
"Get lost."
The wind howled and swirled around them. In front of them, a dark cave loomed like the gaping mouth of a giant beast, waiting for its prey to come willingly.
