How did a pack of wolves end up here? Gui Ye was puzzled. Xiao Qiang was asking him if the departing Head Wolf meant that they would not pose a threat to humans.
To be honest, he had seen plenty of wolfdogs, but real wolves, and so many of them appearing together, was a first for him. He didn’t understand much but forced himself to act knowledgeable. Seizing the opportunity to ask Xiao Qiang for an explanation, he steeled himself to sound impressive.
“The Head Wolf must be going to get reinforcements.”
That statement was enough to send chills down their spines. With so many wolves already present, it was terrifying to think they might be bringing more. Wouldn’t that mean they would be devoured down to the last bone?
While Xiao Qiang and Gui Ye whispered to each other, the wolves let out their loudest howls, baring their sharp white teeth in a menacing display at the humans who dared not fear them.
Lin Yu had never seen wolves in such a coordinated attack stance before; it made him uneasy, and he could feel sweat forming on his palms as he held Jianjian's hand.
With weapons in hand, Gui Ye and his companions aimed at the closest gray wolf, ready to pull the trigger…
Gui Ye was supposed to be a local who understood the habits of these wolves well. To his surprise, aside from violence, he seemed to know little about these wild creatures.
Xiao Qiang and Wu Yi spoke in unison to stop him: “Wait.” Their voices were a bit loud, startling Little Pick-Up, who trembled in fear and hid behind Lin Yu.
Wu Yi stared intently at the wolf pack and caught sight of the departing Head Wolf suddenly turning back. It wasn’t going for reinforcements; it had returned with something in its mouth.
“Don’t be afraid; I’ll give it a try.”
“Don’t be impulsive. If we’re going to act, we should do it together,” Xiao Qiang disagreed with Wu Yi’s idea, mistakenly thinking he wanted to confront the wolves.
Wu Yi smiled nonchalantly and patted Xiao Qiang on the shoulder. “It’s fine; just watch me.”
Gui Ye observed coldly, his finger never leaving the trigger, ready to shoot at any moment. Seeing Wu Yi approach, he felt a slight stir in his heart and thought to himself: In this world, there are all kinds of strange things—some fear death, some do not, but who would voluntarily seek death?
Under the watchful eyes of Xiao Qiang, filled with concern, Wu Yi walked steadily and calmly toward the pack of wolves.
In Gui Ye and the others' imaginations, Wu Yi would soon be torn apart by the hungry wolves, and they would witness a heart-stopping scene.
However, they never anticipated that as Wu Yi approached the wolf pack, the atmosphere was eerily calm. The low murmurs among the wolves fell silent as he drew near; it could be said that every Head Wolf looked up at him with eyes full of reverence.
Strange indeed. This world is filled with oddities every day, so many that they become hard to comprehend, eventually leading to a sense of familiarity with the bizarre. Xiao Qiang was also taken aback by this unexpected phenomenon; he remembered encountering a wolf pack in that city devoid of humans, but such a situation had never occurred.
This is uncanny, he whispered to himself. Glancing over at Lin Yu, who was quietly approaching him, he reached out and squeezed her hand gently as a silent comfort.
Little Pick-Up looked at Lin Yu and then at Xiao Qiang. Making a peculiar gesture, she stepped between them, temporarily blocking their desire to get closer.
Lin Yu was naturally displeased; in front of so many people, she could only suppress her frustration.
When Wu Yi left the wolf pack, he held something in his hand.
Xiao Qiang took the item he handed over and asked curiously, "What is this?"
Wu Yi squinted and said, "You'll understand when you take a look." He then leaned close to Xiao Qiang's ear and whispered a few words.
"You... how is that possible?"
"I have a feeling that in the days to come, this Wolf Pack will lend you a helping hand."
"You just keep talking!"
"I'm serious, I beg the future king to take me along for the ride."
Under the sly gaze of Gui Ye, Xiao Qiang slowly and methodically opened the package. He couldn't help but mutter at Wu Yi, "Just don't make things worse..."
"Hey, look at this!" someone exclaimed.
Xiao Qiang merely glanced at the piece in his hand, a black stone wrapped in yellow-brown cloth, before hurriedly raising his eyes to see what they were looking at.
The wolf pack was retreating. They couldn't understand what kind of dark magic Wu Yi had used to tame and drive away these bloodthirsty and ferocious wolves.
Xiao Qiang didn't find anything particularly special about the seemingly ugly stone in his hand, which was about the size of a fist and unremarkable. However, it was peculiar that it had been brought by the Head Wolf, so he cautiously followed Wu Yi's instructions and carefully put the stone away in his backpack.
Everyone stared in confusion at the wolves that had disappeared over the ridge. Each person secretly relaxed their tense emotions, relieved after a false alarm, all wondering how Wu Yi had managed to do all that.
Wu Yi shrugged nonchalantly and said, "I didn't do anything; I just accepted their gift."
"Gift?" Gui Ye interjected, casting a sharp glance at Xiao Qiang's bulging backpack.
Later on, Wu Yi quietly told Xiao Qiang that the Wolf Pack had actually come to fetch him.
It was his scent that had attracted the Wolf Pack's presence.
Xiao Qiang found Wu Yi's words hard to believe. It reminded him of something ridiculous he had said just as they were retreating from the wolf pack, which almost made him burst out laughing.
Wu Yi seriously stated that one day, Xiao Qiang would become the demon king ruling the universe of the spirit realm.
However, upon further reflection, he recalled that Wind's Sister had mentioned this before. Was it a coincidence or something else? He had no time to speculate or draw conclusions now.
Their next destination was the Dark Forest. He had a premonition that Gui Ye was deliberately leading them into the Dark Forest for some ulterior motive.
Time was of the essence; Xiao Qiang wanted to pass through the Dark Forest before nightfall.
According to Gui Ye, crossing the Dark Forest would shorten their journey to his friend's clinic. So, after traversing the Dark Forest, would climbing over the Gorge lead them to the clinic?
Gui Ye mischievously blinked and nodded noncommittally, appearing distracted as he said, "Yes."
Xiao Qiang questioned Gui Ye's words and actions, even suspecting that Gui Ye was using Wu Yi to blackmail him. The mention of a friend's clinic seemed like a lie. Perhaps this plan had been concocted before they arrived in this era, waiting for him and Wu Yi to take the bait. Speculation and imagination wouldn't solve their problems; he needed to protect Gui Ye carefully along the way. If anything went wrong, they would truly lose their lead in finding Xiao Wu Yi.
Gui Ye claimed that the Dark Forest was very strange; it was called the Dark Forest because once inside, one could inexplicably lose their sense of direction. They had heard rumors that there were things in the Dark Forest even more terrifying than those bloodthirsty Living Dead.
When Xiao Qiang and the others pressed for more information, Gui Ye fell silent on the topic of the Dark Forest.
