The night was still dark, and outside, the cold wind howled, leaving no one to care about what was happening inside the dilapidated house. After the terrifying events that occurred in the Dark Forest, could this be the legendary retribution?
The area of the dough that had been scraped by a dagger had already healed itself. Xiao Qiang did not see this as a good omen; as soon as Gui Ye noticed that there were no scars on his cheek, he would quickly realize that he was a mutant. The consequences of that were easy to imagine... He cautiously scanned the small, broken house, where only he and Jianjian remained, along with a disheveled backpack.
Gui Ye was sure that Shu Bo, who was trapped by iron wire, would not escape. After tossing and turning all night, he had failed to extract any information about the whereabouts of the stone from Xiao Qiang. Cursing under his breath, he took a group of people outside to set up tents and brought out their hidden alcohol and some now-rare food. After a hearty meal, they began discussing how to deal with this ungrateful outsider.
"Ghost Brother, what’s your relationship with that kid?"
Gui Ye tossed a piece of food into his mouth, chewing loudly while making an obscene gesture with his fingers. A lewd smile crept across his scarred face as he said, "No relation at all; just a little bastard I had with a woman, but some mysterious guy snatched him away."
"Hahaha! Ghost Brother, are you serious? Can you smell what a woman is like?"
"Get lost! The kind of woman I need is one who..." Gui Ye downed the drink in his cup and wiped his mouth with a drunken grin. "Women have their ranks; don’t be fooled by their alluring looks—who knows how many men they've been with?"
"Then what does Ghost Brother's goddess look like?" The guys perked up at the mention of women, eager to lean in closer. In this chaotic world, women were like stars in the sky—rare and hard to find. It was good to fantasize about them.
"Let’s talk about making money instead. What do you think about selling that Girl to Big Face over there? She might fetch a good price." Gui Ye licked his fingers after eating meat, making slurping sounds. His alcohol-stained eyes resembled those of a wicked ghost.
Mentioning the Girl brought the topic back around. Someone suggested something crude—Gui Ye smirked wickedly and said, "Not ripe enough; not tasty." After finishing, he warned his companions: "Stay alert; don’t fall asleep like idiots. If anything goes wrong, you might lose your head."
"Hey hey! Mixing with Ghost Brother means there’s food to eat. Who doesn’t know that Ghost Brother is the Demon King around here? Only those foolish outsiders would believe you’re a kind-hearted old man who can be trusted with their children and take your ghost stories seriously."
"Shh! You little brat... That’s nothing! Back in the day, my old man was a ruthless killer. The master of Dark Forest was taken down by my father. But sadly, my dad ended up with a prostitute and gave birth to me..." Gui Ye was truly drunk; this secret buried deep within him slipped out unintentionally.
He glanced at the guy who was flattering him, let out a muffled grunt, and burped loudly. He instructed the two burly men beside him, "Shidan, you and Gou Sheng go check on that guy's situation. If anything seems off..." As he spoke, he handed them both daggers and added, "Just take him out."
The two men, accepting their orders, chuckled foolishly and said, "A dagger isn't sharp enough; just give him a few shots and it's done."
"Alright then, you two patrol while I take a break." As soon as Gui Ye finished speaking, he closed his eyes and instantly fell into a deep sleep, snoring heavily.
"Jianjian, don't sleep," Xiao Qiang whispered urgently.
Little Pick-Up struggled to open her eyes. The dark space was impenetrable; she couldn't see Xiao Qiang but could sense the bloody aura emanating from him.
"I'm scared..." she whimpered softly.
Uh... Xiao Qiang strained against the wire binding his wrists. The metal dug painfully into his skin, breaking through the dried blood crust and causing fresh blood to flow. The pain was unbearable; beads of sweat formed on his tightly furrowed brow.
His thick eyebrows, usually filled with menace, and his tightly pressed lips were clenched even harder. Even in this frozen moment of silence, his imposing presence remained undiminished.
Xiao Qiang secretly exerted himself, moving his limbs vigorously. He pulled and twisted against the wire binding, creating fresh wounds that bled like streams from each torn spot.
Jianjian sensed the increasing stench of blood; her terrified gaze swept across the dark space as she began to cry again.
In Xiao Qiang's vision, Jianjian appeared as a splash of red. Drops of blood flowed down to the ground, quickly seeping into the muddy earth below. The tightly wound wire binding was slowly loosening...
Suddenly—swish—swish, faint sounds came from the ground. Then Xiao Qiang was astonished to see an unusual object emerging from beneath his feet.
A strange object from another realm loomed like an invisible ghost, exerting a powerful magnetic effect that linked to his consciousness. The urge to resist was futile; the sensation was overwhelming—
"Ah..." A loud cry erupted from his chest as Xiao Qiang felt himself suddenly bend over like a shrimp, not only breaking free from the iron wire grip of Shu Bo but also twisting and soaring through the air.
Whispers of an eerie nature filled the air, more like murmurs recounting the unjust grievances from years past. An acid rain awakened this long-dormant spirit, who was waiting for the right moment to take revenge on those who had wronged him—
The ghost was the master of the Dark Forest, an expatriate businessman who had come here to purchase vast tracts of land to cultivate plants unseen in the strongest countries of Asia.
On a moonless night just before the outbreak of nuclear war, a group of masked men arrived, taking advantage of the chaos. He was killed and dragged several miles before being buried in this dilapidated house.
The Kabo Corporation had long been researching biochemical weapons, using a formaldehyde mixture to awaken the dead for experimentation. The toxic smoke that wafted from the chimney polluted the surrounding environment and revived many deceased individuals.
The botanical garden also suffered devastating contamination; those genetically modified plants that were once harmless had now turned carnivorous. The corpse caught in the branches was none other than Gui Ye's father, who had been missing for years.
Xiao Qiang sensed everything from this otherworldly spirit and desperately sought to unravel Shu Bo's hold over him. A loud crash interrupted the connection as something flew and smashed against the wall, breaking the link through which the foreign entity continued to impart information. Then, two figures burst through the door of the crumbling house, both wielding M4 assault rifles.
