Xiao Qiang returned, surprised to see Fang Shanshan crying.
Han Ming cleared his throat and said, "She's washing her eyes with tears."
"That's nonsense..." Xiao Qiang didn't believe it. He pulled out a round object from his pocket and handed it to him, but his gaze remained fixed on Fang Shanshan, filled with questions.
Han Ming took the sphere and noticed that Xiao Qiang's attention was still on his girlfriend's red eyes. He continued the topic he hadn't finished: "Tears are a weakly acidic, transparent, colorless liquid, mostly composed of water. They also contain small amounts of inorganic salts, proteins, lysozyme, immunoglobulin A, complement system components, and other substances. So crying helps to wash away dirt and impurities from the eyes..."
Under Xiao Qiang's gaze, Fang Shanshan squirmed, picked up a tissue to wipe her eyes, and pouted, "What are you staring at? I like to cry; it's none of your business!"
"This?" Xiao Qiang dared not look any longer or ask further. He pretended to scratch his nose and noticed Han Ming staring blankly at them. "What did you just say?"
"Oh, nothing," Han Ming replied casually, but inside he felt a strange pang of bitterness and unease. He thought to himself: What’s going on? No matter how I tried to comfort her earlier, it didn’t help. Now that she’s back, her mood has instantly improved.
He quickly dismissed the slip of emotion.
It didn’t escape Xiao Qiang’s notice. It seemed this guy really had a deep misunderstanding about him and Fang Shanshan.
Xiao Qiang brushed off the dust from his clothes and saw Han Ming still dazedly staring at Fang Shanshan. He pointed at the sphere in Han Ming's hand and reminded him, "Is this the Bionic Core?"
Han Ming snapped back to reality, shifting his concerned gaze from Fang Shanshan's now dry face. He smiled apologetically and asked, "How did you get your hands on it?"
"It's a long story." Xiao Qiang recounted how he chased the robot to a strange place and detailed the robot's ambush and subsequent self-destruction to both of them.
Han Ming furrowed his brow slightly; the lines on his forehead did nothing to mar his handsome face. However, there was an undeniable hint of desolation that lingered on his features, and a touch of melancholy occasionally flickered in his clear bright eyes.
"A robot committing suicide? That's an absurdly miraculous story. Robots don’t feel pain or have consciousness; how could they possibly have suicidal tendencies?" Confounded by the puzzle, Han Ming took deep drags from his cigarette—a habit he had cultivated over many years. With Fang Shanshan present, he tried to resist the urge for a smoke.
"Is there a problem?" Xiao Qiang gazed into Han Ming's bloodshot eyes and could tell that this guy was cut from the same cloth as Professor R—both were obsessed with their research and would spare no effort in pursuing it.
"There is a problem; however, this issue is somewhat illogical," Han Ming said gravely as his expression darkened further.
"Really?"
"I don't know where you've chased the robot, but it's a few hundred meters away from the Slum, at the newly built NS-3 Base of Kabo Corporation. It's said to be heavily guarded, and anyone who trespasses will be killed without mercy."
"Wow, that's true," Xiao Qiang nodded in agreement.
"Was the robot deliberately luring you there? Then attacking you?" Han Ming pondered, continuing his analysis. "The robot probably didn't want to kill you; it was just acting in self-defense. If it really wanted to kill you, why not do it somewhere else? Instead, it successfully lured you to that location before revealing itself."
"Interesting."
"So, the robot's real purpose is to tell you something but couldn't express it. Or perhaps its system is malfunctioning and can't speak."
"How is that possible? Are you talking about a robot? It feels like you're discussing a human," Fang Shanshan finally interjected after listening for a while. "Robots don't have feelings; how could they have such delicate reasoning? You two aren't losing your minds, are you?"
Han Ming sighed, "Women." He deliberately paused with a knowing look, smiling silently at Shanshan.
Fang Shanshan was not willing to let it go and pouted, "What's wrong with women?"
"Woman is meant to be cherished. My dear, can I talk with Xiao Qiang for a bit?" Han Ming said cheerfully to Fang Shanshan.
As the saying goes, one doesn't strike a smiling face. Moreover, since he was her boyfriend, Fang Shanshan shook her head in annoyance and moved aside to keep quiet.
"That's true; Shanshan has a point," Han Ming rubbed his hands together and paced back and forth as if trying to find a way to convince Xiao Qiang but couldn't come up with a better reason. "Someone must have tampered with its Third Law." He added confidently, "Yes, it must be that way."
"Are you suggesting that besides you and Kabo Corporation, there are other mechanics secretly sabotaging Kabo Corporation's products?"
"Yes."
Xiao Qiang frowned and nodded. "It seems like there's no other logical explanation for these strange occurrences. So, is the Bionic Core still useful?"
Han Ming opened his palm and stared at the spherical object. "All the secrets are in this Bionic Core. Whether it's useful or not will be clear once I install it on Karl." He walked towards Karl.
Just as they were both intently focused on the Bionic Core in Han Ming's palm.
Xiao Qiang suddenly made a surprising move that caught both Fang Shanshan and Han Ming off guard. He stepped forward and, bang! A punch landed squarely on Carl's neck, who was completely unprepared.
A flash of sparks erupted like a short circuit. Carl leaned back, stumbling a few steps before crashing into a makeshift bookshelf, which toppled over and sent him sliding down against the wall.
"You..." Han Ming fumed, rushing forward to grab Xiao Qiang by the collar, his anger palpable. "You idiot! With that punch, you could short-circuit Carl!"
Xiao Qiang remained unfazed, not even attempting to struggle. With a serious expression, he replied, "He's a robot; how could he be so easily destroyed? If we don't do this, how will we know the effect of the Bionic Core on Carl?"
Xiao Qiang's words sparked an epiphany in Han Ming. That's right! This Bionic Core was taken from a self-destructing robot's brain. Carl had an ordinary simulation chip installed instead of a brain. If they just installed it without caution, could it lead to negative effects? But if they canceled Carl's original system settings and installed the Bionic Core, they could observe his true capabilities.
Due to time constraints, Fang Shanshan couldn't stay any longer; she needed to return to her apartment. The apartment was located in the affluent area, requiring her to pass through the Slum and the robot base to get home.
Han Ming offered to escort her.
Fang Shanshan declined.
She also didn't want Xiao Qiang to accompany her. She expressed her hope that the two of them would clarify the situation with the robot driver soon so that he could pick her up tomorrow for their trip to the town.
