The city erupted in a robot riot, leaving the police chief in a state of panic. He couldn't ignore the chaos unfolding before him, yet he couldn't resort to force to suppress it either.
He was acutely aware of the cost of a single robot. If anything went wrong, his life and fortune would be insufficient to cover the immense losses incurred by Robot Company.
Pacing anxiously by the office window, he looked down at the chaotic scene below. The police cars and officers dispatched to quell the situation were being decimated by the rampaging robots, forcing people to retreat into their homes under the threat of the robotic army.
Long Lou, feeling uneasy about his new partner assigned by the chief, couldn't help but think of Zhong Xuan, who was set to retire soon.
"Chief, should we call Zhong Xuan back? He still has a few months until his official retirement, right?"
As soon as Long Lou mentioned it, the chief's furrowed brow relaxed slightly as he pondered. The robot riot had garnered worldwide attention. Kabo Robot Company fell under his jurisdiction; if anything major happened, he would be held accountable.
He recalled Zhong Xuan's earlier ramblings about a robot revolution. It seemed that old man might have known something. Rubbing his ear nervously, he feigned calmness and said to Long Lou, "Go check if he's home. Be careful and avoid unnecessary confrontations with the robots. Bring Zhong Xuan back; I need to ask him something."
Zhong Xuan's home was likely experiencing a situation similar to many others. His wife was trapped inside by the rampaging robots, and his cousin had left early that morning and hadn't returned.
Long Lou did his best to avoid any conflict with the robots, opting for a secluded alleyway before finally arriving at Zhong Xuan's house.
Unfortunately, there were robots stationed at the entrance, and he had no idea what was happening inside.
"Please present your identification," Long Lou said, following standard procedure as he flashed his ID in front of the robot. He was left with no choice; if the Riot Robot didn't comply, he would have to resort to using his weapon.
To his surprise, the robot adhered to its previous protocol and scanned his identification. "Officer Long Lou, do you require assistance?"
Long Lou tucked away his ID and thought to himself: at least you're reasonable. Out loud, he replied, "I need to enter and find someone."
"Understood." The robot stepped aside obediently, allowing him entry without hesitation. Just as he stepped inside, the door slammed shut behind him.
Long Lou was startled; was this some kind of trap? A game of letting him in but not letting him out? Inside, he saw Zhong Yan's wife sitting in the living room with tear-streaked cheeks, completely oblivious to his arrival.
"Sister-in-law? Where's Zhong Xuan?"
Zhong Yan's wife turned her head mechanically at the unexpected appearance of Long Lou. "How did you get in here?"
"Who just came in? What's going on?"
"If you can come in, does that mean you can go out?"
"I don't know yet. What about Zhong Xuan?"
"I don't know. He hasn't come back for a while. Tell me, has something happened to him?"
"Oh no!" This was too strange. Long Lou had come to find Zhong Xuan, but his wife said he hadn't been home for quite some time. What was going on? "What happened? Did you two have a fight? Or is it something else?"
"We didn't fight; that day was his birthday." As she spoke, she pouted and said, "I prepared a whole table of his favorite dishes and waited... but he never came back." As Zhong Yan's Wife said this, her eyes reddened, and she choked back tears before bursting into loud sobs.
"Don't do this. I'll... I'll think of a way." Long Lou was anxious and called his superior through the earpiece, saying, "Chief, we might have a problem; Zhong Xuan has mysteriously disappeared."
"What?" The superior's tone was frantic and angry. "That old rascal must be up to something. I'll check it out." Saying this, he activated the police programming system's smart tracking device and discovered that Zhong Xuan's presence had been detected in the northwest.
"It's useless; the entire connection system has been sabotaged by robots," Zhong Yan's Wife sobbed, speaking slowly.
"Don't worry, sister-in-law. The police department isn't connected to Robot Company's system because we are the local law enforcement agency. Regardless of how powerful Kabo Corporation is, they can't violate the law, right?"
"Yes... yes, that's best."
"I found something; guess what?" The superior said meaningfully.
Long Lou became alert. "Is there any new information?"
"That old rascal Zhong Xuan has gotten bold. He actually abducted several Old Version Robots and took them to the restricted area in the northwest, the Ocean Desert."
"How is that possible? He wouldn't need to do that!" Long Lou tried to mitigate the bad impression of Zhong Xuan in his superior's mind.
"Don't forget, I also come from a detective background. That old man has ulterior motives; he's just causing trouble and is the instigator behind sabotaging the robot system." After saying this, the superior decisively hung up the connection system. The police programming system tracked individuals based on biometric data left in police records, including skin and blood samples among other bodily data to pinpoint their whereabouts. This tracking device was accurate and had no historical failures.
Under Zhong Yan's Wife's watchful gaze, Long Lou's expression changed dramatically as cold sweat broke out all over him. "This..."
Seeing Long Lou's panicked expression, Zhong Yan's Wife couldn't help but wonder, "Is something wrong with Zhong Xuan? He..."
In a cold sweat, Long Lou realized that if Zhong Xuan was deemed a saboteur, he would undoubtedly become the number one target for extermination. Perhaps he would be shot dead in the desert, or maybe he would be lucky enough to return to the city and confess his mistakes in hopes of receiving a lighter sentence.
Regardless of the outcome, Long Lou had to seize the last chance to save his old partner. He dashed out of Zhong Xuan's door, determined to plead with his superior.
The robot was difficult to deal with; it was just as Long Lou had anticipated. It only allowed entry and not exit, blocking his attempts to escape with an unyielding demeanor that made communication impossible. After several failed attempts to break through, he had no choice but to feign retreat, slipping into the shadows.
"It seems we need to get serious; screw the robot," Long Lou said as he drew his gun and aimed at the robot's head. With a shot, the robot was hit in the head, and he grabbed the stunned Zhong Yan's Wife and ran.
"Where are we going?"
"To find him."
The two hurriedly rushed outside and spotted their neighbor's car parked nearby. Without hesitation, Long Lou approached and smashed the window with the butt of his gun before reaching inside to open the door.
The car roared to life and sped away from the scene. The neighbor's robot showed no interest in pursuing the car thieves; its mission was limited to protecting this family under the newly established human protection agreement, which had just been modified. It could not allow them to run amok until the plan was fully implemented.
