As they approached their destination, everyone grew increasingly tense. "Less than forty seconds to arrival," Xiao Qiang checked his watch more frequently than he glanced at Lin Yu.
In this moment of anxiety, their facial expressions varied. Although they tried hard to appear calm, their frantic eyes betrayed them.
"Don't be nervous; this isn't our first time facing these Mimetic Organisms," Xiao Qiang reassured them, though he himself felt uncertain. If the sensors malfunctioned again, all their efforts would be in vain.
At that moment, Lin Yu was particularly anxious. Her body swayed slightly with the aircraft's movements, and her gaze never left Xiao Qiang. Just as they were about to reach their destination, a burst of sparks erupted from the bottom of the cabin. It seemed the Mimic Monster had detected their presence and was beginning a targeted attack on their aircraft.
Seated in the cabin, they suddenly felt a violent jolt as the plane was bombarded from all sides. The cabin began to shake violently. In the chaos, it dawned on them that they couldn't wait for an automated landing; they needed to initiate an emergency descent.
Wen Kai raised his pulse wave weapon and fired at the general area where they could not yet visually locate the attackers. Ground erupted in flames, illuminating the surroundings.
Just then, the plane was hit with even more ferocious attacks. The fuselage lost control and detached from its connection point, spiraling downwards. "Jump! Quickly!" Wu Yi shouted in panic as he struggled to unfasten his parachute buckle due to the automatic landing system.
Xiao Qiang yanked off his parachute buckle and shouted, "Jump!"
Lin Yu, Xiao Qiang, and Wen Kai jumped first, while Wu Yi, Li Hang, and the soldier piloting the transport aircraft plummeted down along with the cabin into the water below.
The water was still but deep. The MctcH Mech Suit increased their sinking weight after entering the water. "Take off your combat suits!" Xiao Qiang yelled.
Li Hang and Wu Yi struggled in the water to remove their suits while clinging to nearby objects. Unfortunately, the soldier who had brought them there wasn't so lucky; he sank straight to the bottom due to the weight of his MctcH Mech Suit without any chance of resurfacing.
Debris from the exploding transport aircraft continued to burn on the surface of the water, surrounded by wreckage. As Xiao Qiang and the others plunged into the water, they had no choice but to shed their cumbersome suits and clamber onto a nearby broken ship to catch their breath in its flooded hold.
After this incident, their previously devised plan had to be altered. Out of six people who had come, one was already lost, leaving five remaining.
As they jumped from the plane, they scattered—this was their most critical vulnerability. The Mimic Monsters were cunning; once they realized Xiao Qiang's group was separated, they would attack one by one.
Thus, as they spread out, each remained discreetly silent while searching for their companions.
Wu Yi cursed under his breath; he had lost his beloved shoulder cannon while scrambling up onto a wrecked ship after hitting the water. The burning debris from the explosion resembled clusters of torches flickering in stark contrast against the dark surroundings.
Plans changed faster than anticipated; some of their weapons were lost during the crash. Xiao Qiang's first priority was finding Lin Yu. In the darkness, he felt around until he found a wooden stick illuminated by flickering flames and spotted Lin Yu searching for them nearby.
Fortunately, they were all gradually moving toward shallower waters. As they approached shallower depths, they noticed not only wrecked ships but also cars and collapsed buildings in the water. Underneath the devastation wrought by the Mimic Monsters, the city had lost its former grandeur.
This was merely a corner of a fallen zone; other areas likely fared no better. Hush—hush—Xiao Qiang signaled for Lin Yu to come closer as he heard footsteps splashing through the water nearby.
"We're fifty meters from their lair; can we make it?" Wen Kai and Li Hang approached them cautiously.
Xiao Qiang nodded. "As long as you're okay, let's think of a way."
"Before we even start, we've already lost," Wu Yi said, feeling a bit defeated as he dropped his shoulder cannon.
"Damn it, without weapons, don't you still have your claws?" Wen Kai joked, gesturing with his mouth and shouting, "Claw them to death!"
"It's obvious that there's a strong fire point about ten meters from the nest. Those monsters that attacked us earlier are there. We need to get past that fire point to reach the nest and find the monster leader," Lin Yu explained.
"There should be no less than a thousand Mimetic Organisms at that fire point. We can't fight them head-on. We need to stick to the original plan and eliminate the leader," he continued.
"Right, we need to find a way to fly over," Xiao Qiang suggested confidently.
"Okay, how do you propose we fly over?" Wen Kai replied, his usual sarcasm intact even in such dire circumstances.
"No need to fly. Let's check the engine of the transport plane. We can use the engine to generate power and push forward. Once we get past that area, we should be fine," Xiao Qiang said with assurance.
"Alright then, what should we do next?"
"Wen Kai, Li Hang, and Wu Yi, you three clear a runway. Lin Yu and I will go fix the engine."
"Okay, no problem," Li Hang nodded in agreement with Xiao Qiang's suggestion. The three of them rushed into the water to clear away any obstacles blocking the plane's engine.
Xiao Qiang powered on the system successfully. Lin Yu watched the water surface nervously; if they stirred up too much commotion, the Mimetic Organisms would surely attack again.
"We need to hurry; something feels off," Wen Kai was the first to sense trouble, noticing that objects floating in the distance seemed to be moving.
"Hurry up!" Li Hang urged Xiao Qiang. "We need to get out of here!" Just as he spoke, ripples spread across the water's surface dramatically.
Under Lin Yu's anxious gaze, Xiao Qiang remained calm and methodically repaired the damaged engine wiring.
The ripples spread rapidly; Li Hang, Wen Kai, and Wu Yi found themselves in a precarious situation on the unprotected water surface.
At a critical moment, Xiao Qiang decisively dropped the wiring he was holding and shouted, "Evacuate now!" As soon as he spoke, monstrous octopus-like creatures surged forward, splashing water as their swift tentacles approached.
"Come on then, you bastard!" Wen Kai lifted his gun and fired at the approaching monsters.
With a piercing whistle followed by a thunderous explosion, one of the monsters lunging forward was blown apart, its tentacles burning and falling into the water like scattered stars.
"Awesome!" Wen Kai cheered triumphantly.
"This isn't a drill; don't let your guard down!" Li Hang shouted as he sprayed bullets in rapid succession.
Wu Yi clawed at a nearby Mimetic Organism and tore it in half. The corrosive liquid sprayed onto his face. "Damn that hurts!" He quickly dipped his head into the water to cool off. When he raised his head again, his face was smeared with blood—quite a frightening sight.
"You and Wu Yi retreat to the engine area," Wen Kai instructed Li Hang to join Wu Yi so they could all slide over together using the engine's front section.
