"Xiao Qiang!" A shout rang out, and the nanny was indeed caught off guard. She turned to look back, and seizing the opportunity, Xiao Qiang stepped forward. The nanny felt a sudden numbness in her wrist as the dagger was snatched from her hand. With a quick pull, the girl slipped free from the other hand.
Realizing the danger, the nanny felt vulnerable without her shield. Panic surged within her as she attempted to flee. Just as she pulled open the door and looked up, she saw a familiar face with a hint of a flattering smile. Slightly bowing, she lowered her posture and said with a forced smile, "Miss Mei has arrived." After that, she reined in her smile and cast a sly glance at Xiao Qiang and Shagu Nianzhuzhu, saying, "They are all here." With that, she humbly stepped back.
Once Plum Blossom Rain entered, she tore off the skin that clung tightly to her body right in front of Xiao Qiang. The skin was as thin and flexible as a cicada's wing; once it was pulled away, it fell limply to the ground.
Revealing her true self, Plum Blossom Rain smirked as if admiring a living wax figure. She gazed down at Xiao Qiang and said, "Do you think our meeting again is a case of fate or just misfortune?"
"Hmph," Xiao Qiang scoffed at Plum Blossom Rain's words with disdain. "We are on different paths; there's no talk of fate here. It's time to settle old scores along with new ones."
"Oh?" Plum Blossom Rain, relying on her numbers, couldn't hide the flicker of resentment in her eyes as she stared at Xiao Qiang. With a shift in demeanor, she raised her chin in a provocative manner and said dismissively, "You think you can settle scores with me in your current situation?"
"What’s wrong with my situation? The cool breeze outside is perfect for stretching my limbs," Xiao Qiang replied cryptically while casting a contemptuous glance at the troublemaker known as Serpent Woman.
"Interesting. How about we play a little game?" Plum Blossom Rain suggested as her gaze shifted to Nian Zhu, who was cowering behind Xiao Qiang. "She’s your burden. How about you hand her over to me?"
Xiao Qiang looked at her with utter disdain. "Hand her over? That would be like sending a sheep into a tiger's den."
She raised an index finger and said repeatedly, "N-n-n! Don't think of me as so evil. I'm just kindly reminding you that she's the heir of the Shagu Family. Someone entrusted me to protect her well." The cunning Plum Blossom Rain moved closer while speaking and reached out to grab.
Xiao Qiang swiftly wrapped his legs around Nian Zhu's waist and flicked his wrist to deflect Plum Blossom Rain's claw with his dagger. A powerful aura surged toward her face, forcing her to retreat. Seizing the moment, he darted away like a flash of white light before everyone's eyes.
Seeing Xiao Qiang slip away from under her nose once again made Plum Blossom Rain's face turn green with rage. She barked orders at those already chasing after him, "Catch him alive!"
"Miss Mei... my reward," the nanny called out urgently as she stepped out from behind the door.
"Reward? Here, let me give it to you," Plum Blossom Rain said with a sinister smile, pretending to reach for money. As the nanny approached, she extended her claws and snapped the woman's neck with a cold laugh. "Though I may be wicked, I can't stand traitorous Dog Servants."
Xiao Qiang was concerned about Nian Zhu being too young; he didn't want his momentary pride to cause her any harm. He took off running with her on his back, moving like lightning. The thugs commanded by Plum Blossom Rain were no match for him; in an instant, he had vanished from sight.
At eleven years old, Nian Zhu still didn’t know that her parents were dead. However, she shared a secret with Xiao Qiang: she had seen what her father placed in her grandfather's Medical Room.
"Your grandfather has an allergy."
"Yes! That's why he rarely goes out; he prefers staying indoors and doesn't like my father. Only I have always kept him company."
This is it. In Xiao Qiang's memory, this behind-the-scenes boss had never shown his face. It turned out he had health issues. It seems Shagu Huo Nan wanted his father to pass away early so that he could inherit the family legacy and become the legal heir of the Shagu Family.
However, another question arose in Xiao Qiang's mind: Shagu Huo Nan was originally Mr. Shagu's biological son. He should have inherited the Shagu Family's wealth, so why did he feel the need to resort to patricide to obtain what was rightfully his?
Nian Zhu said, "Grandpa made a will before he fell seriously ill. Father suspects that Grandpa left the estate to that private doctor."
"Plum Blossom Rain."
"Yes," Nian Zhu continued, "this woman has ulterior motives. Her relationship with Grandpa seems to be more than just doctor and patient; they have had an ambiguous relationship for many years."
Xiao Qiang nodded. "Plum Blossom Rain's identity is special, and her background is complicated because of this." He roughly reached out and patted Nian Zhu's head, saying, "It's really hard for you to be exposed to such deceitful ways at such a young age, seeing the ugliness of the world so clearly."
Nian Zhu remained silent, looking at the dark night sky with a conflicted expression. She leaned against Xiao Qiang's back, feeling warm and comfortable, a bit tired and wanting to sleep.
"I'm getting sleepy," Xiao Qiang said as he lifted her slightly. "Miss, don't sleep yet. I'm not familiar with this area; you need to guide me." Not far away, there were flickering lights and the sound of car horns.
"There’s a car ahead; we can go to the outskirts. Grandpa has a house there," Nian Zhu said, her voice growing softer as if she were falling asleep.
The little girl dozed off sweetly on Xiao Qiang's back. He had no choice but to stop a passing car and randomly pointed in a direction, hoping to find a safe place to sleep for the night.
The car took them to a motel and sped away. The motel looked decent. Xiao Qiang checked his pockets but found no money. Just as he was about to leave, the attendant at the front desk noticed Nian Zhu sleeping on his back.
"Nian Zhu!"
"You know her?"
"Of course! This motel belongs to their Shagu Family," the attendant said warmly as he took Nian Zhu from Xiao Qiang's back and cheerfully led them both to the best room.
Nian Zhu mumbled in her sleep, saying all sorts of things.
"Grandpa isn't dead..."
"Hmm?" Xiao Qiang asked suspiciously, testing the waters. "If Grandpa isn't dead, where is he?"
"In a tall tower... There are giants inside."
"What does the giant look like?"
"He can turn into grandpa and also dance with a sword."
"Nian Zhu."
"Uh-huh."
"Are you dreaming?"
When Xiao Qiang asked this question, Nian Zhu turned over and stopped mumbling in her sleep.
Strangely, what was this child talking about with the tower? The giant? Grandpa is not dead? This series of questions left Xiao Qiang feeling perplexed.
After pondering for a moment, the wide-awake Xiao Qiang focused again on the sleeping Nian Zhu. If it weren't for her, he could have easily dealt with Plum Blossom Rain. Just thinking about her countless misdeeds made his teeth itch with hatred.
