In the Post-Century world, Xiao Qiang, puzzled and confused, quickly got up and ran a few steps to chase after the large bird that had already flown away. But the bird was gone. Suddenly, he remembered the box he had been holding.
The box had fallen with him into this forest. He looked down and found it under a large tree. Fortunately, there was a thick layer of dry leaves on the ground; otherwise, the box would have been severely damaged from such a high fall.
After retrieving the box, Xiao Qiang raised his wristwatch, preparing to connect with the base. Just then, he heard the sound of a hunter's horn and commotion coming from a distance. Doubts about his location grew stronger; logically, it was impossible for primitive communication tools like horns to exist in the Post-Century era.
He hid behind a tree, wanting to see who was blowing the horn.
A group of savages appeared in Xiao Qiang's line of sight. He rubbed his eyes in disbelief, suspecting he was seeing things. Savages in the Post-Century? These were the kind of savages he had only read about in books.
They looked disheveled, dressed in animal skins, wielding large wooden clubs and carrying stone axes. Perhaps they had come to investigate something that had fallen from the sky.
Xiao Qiang dared not move, crouching behind the tree, hoping these savages would leave so he could find an open area to connect with Matt and inquire about what was happening.
However, the savages showed no intention of leaving anytime soon. They picked up their clubs and began striking trees, bushes, and wild plants one by one, as if they were hunting rabbits into a pen. It seemed they were about to strike near him.
A heavy breath came from behind him. Without thinking, Xiao Qiang turned to look. To his horror, about fifty meters away from where he crouched, a Saber-Toothed Tiger stared at him with its lantern-like eyes glowing with a menacing green light.
Seeing the curved fangs hanging at its lips, Xiao Qiang held his breath. He had no choice: either expose himself and be taken by the savages or be eaten by the Saber-Toothed Tiger lurking behind him.
The Saber-Toothed Tiger belonged to the feline family; its habits were similar to those of cats—stealthy and ambush hunters. If Xiao Qiang hadn’t turned around to look, he wouldn’t have waited for the savages to leave; he would have met his end in the jaws of the tiger.
The Saber-Toothed Tiger lay still, quietly waiting.
Xiao Qiang could no longer remain calm. Suddenly, he stepped out from his hiding spot boldly. His unexpected appearance immediately caused quite a stir among the savages. A leading savage waved his hand and shouted, "He has appeared!"
The remaining barbarians cautiously approached, raising their hands high. Xiao Qiang looked quite disheveled, and the patterns on the faces of the barbarians made it difficult to discern their true appearances. However, once he stepped forward, the search by these barbarians ceased.
In fact, this was a hunting party passing through Waji Mountain. Waji Mountain was a small village where the hunting party would teach the children of Waji Mountain how to hunt while leaving a small portion of their catch for the village.
This was a tacit exchange, akin to what modern civilization refers to as paying taxes. Xiao Qiang had been captured by the hunting party; one could say he was seized as prey and was being escorted to Waji Mountain.
"What is this place?" Xiao Qiang had lost count of how many times he had asked that question, yet no one answered him or acknowledged his embarrassment and helplessness. In this unfamiliar environment, he dared not act recklessly.
Thinking back to the gaping mouth of the Saber-Toothed Tiger, he felt a chill in his heart. That bastard Matt had gotten him into trouble again.
The Time Machine Box had been confiscated by these barbarians and was now cradled like a treasure by another barbarian.
Waji Mountain lay nestled among towering mountains, and from afar, wisps of smoke could be seen rising from a Hut. The humans that came into Xiao Qiang's view were quite peculiar; they were barefoot and wore no clothes, merely covering their waists and private parts in a rudimentary manner.
Those squatting at the village entrance held wooden sticks as weapons. Observing all this, Xiao Qiang felt as if he had stepped into Ancient Times.
Could it be? Oh heavens, I haven't done anything wrong to deserve this. Why am I being punished time and again? Xiao Qiang lamented inwardly, silently cursing the heavens. His hands were bound tightly, causing him pain from whatever material was used to restrain him. Several times he attempted to loosen them, only for them to tighten further.
It seemed that some sort of ritual was taking place in the village, as sounds of chanting emerged from a dilapidated house. The hunting party brought Xiao Qiang into this broken-down structure, and the chanting abruptly ceased.
Xiao Qiang felt curious and startled eyes sweep over him, locking onto him alone. As he stepped into the dimly lit room, he quickly adjusted to the light inside and noticed that most of the people there were women.
They were dressed similarly to the men; their chests were full and swayed with every movement. He recalled those barbarian hunters and took a closer look at these women.
This place lacked something precious—civilization. They were barbaric, unkempt, with wild and brutal expressions in their eyes. What did all this mean? Xiao Qiang felt miserable; this was not some Post-Century setting but clearly Ancient Times.
In the silence, rough hands reached out from somewhere and grasped Xiao Qiang's face. He had no time to struggle before realizing that it was an elderly woman who appeared to hold great respect among the other barbarians.
The old woman’s face was smeared with an unknown substance that looked very white, almost like lime. With her eyes half-closed as if in prayer, she muttered an ancient incantation before suddenly opening her eyes wide and staring intently at Xiao Qiang.
"He is sent by the Father of Gods to save our village of Waji Mountain. He brings us news of four-legged beasts," she shouted loudly, startling Xiao Qiang. He then saw the surrounding male and female barbarians whispering among themselves as if holding a meeting to vote on whether her words were true.
A figure emerged from a corner holding something resembling a spear. Tilting its head, it scrutinized Xiao Qiang from top to bottom before reaching out its hand—grimy beyond belief—with intentions that made Xiao Qiang feel nauseous. Unable to move due to his bound hands, he could only furrow his brow as this ugly barbarian examined his teeth and lips.
