In scientific terms, a mirage is a natural phenomenon caused by the refraction and total internal reflection of light. It has an unusual nickname, also called a mirage, which refers to the optical illusion created by the reflection of light from objects on Earth as it passes through the atmosphere. Essentially, a mirage is an optical illusion.
There are many theories about the Mirage Tower. Geographers explain that the 'mirage' occurring in deserts is due to sunlight encountering air of different densities, resulting in a refractive phenomenon that forms the Mirage Tower, attributed to the bending of light.
In the desert, during the day, the sand and stones are scorched by the sun, causing rapid increases in surface temperature. Due to poor thermal conductivity of air, when there is no wind, the vertical temperature above the desert drops, allowing them to avoid the hot air close to the ground and thus overcome the allure of the mirage.
As they walked through the desert, fatigue slowly seeped into their bodies, making them feel drowsy.
The more they felt this way, the more cautious they needed to be. Xiao Qiang had once heard Wapu mention the changing weather patterns in the desert, especially during abnormal conditions when the legendary Mirage Tower might appear.
According to scientific theory, the appearance of the Mirage Tower should be insubstantial, like mist formed from water vapor—visible yet intangible.
However, what Lin Yu witnessed as the Mirage Tower did not align with this scientific description; instead, it appeared as a tangible illusion. At that moment, the open space felt stiflingly hot, with no wind and an unrealistically blue sky, giving rise to an odd sensation in her mind.
Feeling an impending situation, Xiao Qiang suddenly grasped her hand tightly and whispered, "No matter what happens, don't let go."
Lin Yu was extremely nervous; her heart raced wildly as she felt vibrations beneath her feet that suggested an earthquake was imminent. Up close, it seemed as if grains of sand were being shaken through a sieve. The ground beneath them felt like it might collapse at any moment.
Then a bizarre scene unfolded before them. The sky began to change dramatically—dust swirled around them as darkness fell. From about fifty meters away came a tremendous sound of shifting earth. Lin Yu felt an urge to run; she wondered if there was indeed an earthquake and feared they might fall into a fissure in the ground.
The ground did crack open, but instead of revealing emptiness, it unveiled a grand and magnificent Ancient Building rising from the desert sands. The structure featured doors and windows along with pure stone steps and intricately carved beams…
"Should we go inside?" Lin Yu's palms were sweating as she felt herself slipping from Xiao Qiang's grip. Nervously swallowing hard, her throat felt parched and fiery.
Xiao Qiang's resolute gaze was fixed on the slowly rising building as he stated firmly, "Let's go." Before Lin Yu could respond, he pulled her toward the dark entrance of the building.
They stepped into the Ancient Building, and the light instantly dimmed. After a few seconds, they felt a violent tremor as the structure began to sink.
“Oh my God…”
“Don’t be afraid.”
The pregnant woman became sensitive, questioning everything around her. Panic made her restless; if it weren't for Xiao Qiang's company, Lin Yu would have been terrified beyond measure.
The building stopped moving, and an extended passage appeared before them. Strangely, although they were inside this Ancient Building, they did not feel darkness. It was as if the light had merely refracted when they first entered, causing a brief dimness; now it was as bright as day, though the environment had changed.
Xiao Qiang noticed that the surrounding brightness was not due to light but rather a strange substance reflecting a crystalline glow that distorted their visual perception.
“What is this?” Lin Yu had experienced life and death countless times while battling Mimic Monsters. Yet she was deeply afraid of lingering in such an eerily quiet space devoid of life. Her voice echoed back to her as if there were a sound wall nearby: What is this?
“Shh!” Xiao Qiang leaned closer to sniff the crystal on the stone wall; it was colorless and odorless. Just as they focused on the crystal wall, a voice echoed back to them, startling them both as if a third person had suddenly shouted in their ears. They exchanged tense glances. Xiao Qiang was prepared; he pulled out a Glow Stick from his backpack and tossed it inside. The Glow Stick illuminated the crystal wall, causing it to shimmer with countless sparkling points of light.
Lin Yu reached out to poke the crystal, feeling a slight pressure. She stared intently at the crystal wall as her mind raced: “Silver Nitrate?”
“Yes, how did I not think of that? Silver Nitrate is a heavy metal salt and cannot be used as a food additive, so it’s generally absent from edible items. Silver Nitrate is also a colorless crystal, just like this.”
“Hmm, we’ve reached a certain level of chemistry knowledge; I didn’t expect it to come in handy here.”
They slowly entered the passageway, but when they reached the end and were about to enter a large opening, Lin Yu suddenly stopped in her tracks, staring ahead with intense nervousness.
Xiao Qiang protected her, stepping closer to take a better look. At the entrance gate, a Werewolf stood with its mouth wide open, revealing sharp teeth that glinted menacingly, glaring down at them.
"Werewolf?" This was Lin Yu's first encounter with a Werewolf, and he couldn't help but feel a chill run down his spine. The Werewolf had a fierce appearance, a Bloodthirsty Creature that would make anyone uneasy just by looking at it.
"Is this thing even real?" Xiao Qiang exclaimed, swiftly tossing out a Glow Stick. The bright light illuminated the Werewolf's snarling face, yet it did not lunge at them.
Lin Yu shook his head, wiping the cold sweat from his forehead. "It looks so lifelike, just like the real thing."
"Wait, it shouldn't be a statue." Xiao Qiang had already stepped up to the Werewolf and reached out to touch its head. It felt furry and resilient, but as soon as his fingers brushed against the Werewolf's fur, he instinctively pulled back.
"What’s wrong?"
"O(∩_∩)O Haha~ A Werewolf should revert to human form once it's dead." Xiao Qiang found it strange; this Werewolf looked as if it had just died. But that couldn't be right! This Ancient Building came from Stratum, formed by tectonic movements and unique geographical conditions that caused it to rise from the desert. Wapu had mentioned that there was a mysterious city beneath Mirage Tower in the desert of Stratum, claiming that treasures lay within and an undead creature guarded them! "We need to get out of here quickly."
Lin Yu was puzzled. "What's wrong with you?"
"Run!" Xiao Qiang grabbed Lin Yu's hand and squeezed past under the fierce gaze of the Werewolf.
