The Patrol Officer of the Sun Tribe discovered the Sage lying in the stream, nearly dead and soaked through. They helped him up and carried him back to the Sun Tribe's altar. Vapsin rushed over upon hearing the news and inquired about what had happened to the Sage.
The Sage was disoriented, unable to answer any questions. His face was filled with confusion, his demeanor strange, and he spoke incoherently, often staring at others' necks.
From that day on, the Sage avoided going out during the day, isolating himself at home and refusing visitors.
Vapsin could not afford to lose the Sage's assistance. In his anxious state, he thought of the Saint trapped in Taiyin Valley. The Saint was an outsider, a spy sent by the Waji Mountain Tribe as mentioned by the Sage. He told himself not to pity this saboteur masquerading as a Saint.
Xiao Qiang arrived at the swamp and deliberately made noise by throwing objects to lure out the lurking monster. A massive tail emerged, curving high and arched, with two scythe-like appendages scraping against each other, releasing jets of venom.
The monster seemed furious at Xiao Qiang's provocation, raising its scythe-like tail as if it were glaring at a sworn enemy. The Swamp Monster he had killed yesterday must have been its offspring; otherwise, it wouldn't be so enraged.
"Come on! Come eat me!" Xiao Qiang taunted the monster, waving his hand and shouting loudly.
The silent hostility and stealthy movements were truly frightening. Yet he was unafraid; he had come prepared for this moment. As the monster suddenly halted and lunged at him, Xiao Qiang struck first.
His weapon flew out with a swift sound, and the dagger cleanly severed the monster's neck. A stream of dark liquid quickly floated in the murky swamp as he smirked in triumph.
Behind him came a couple of barks; it was that damned hyena. Xiao Qiang turned around to see the little creature mimicking him, jumping along the shore and barking wildly at other small swamp monsters, provoking them.
The Swamp Monsters posed no threat to the hyena; they were still young Mud Monsters and lacked the ability to leap onto land.
Completely focused on the hyena, Xiao Qiang remained unaware that another massive Mud Monster was slowly approaching from five meters behind him.
Previously, he had observed that there should be two large Mud Monsters here, one male and one female. If his guess was correct, then the one he had just killed was definitely male.
If it weren't for the sudden appearance of the hyena, he wouldn't have let his guard down, almost paying the price for it. In just a few seconds, he nearly became a meal for the Mud Monster.
With no time to dodge, Xiao Qiang charged forward, wielding a dagger bound with animal bones, aiming it at the Mud Monster.
The Mud Monster raised its tail, the blade-like end scraping against itself, releasing jets of venom. Xiao Qiang grimaced and cursed, "It stinks!" The creature charged at him, its hard tail swinging and striking him squarely in the face—painful!
Ducking to the right, he pulled out the sinew from the Swamp Monster at his waist and waved it in front of the Female Swamp Monster, deliberately provoking it. "Come on, you filthy thing! See what I've got?"
Seeing the sinew in Xiao Qiang's hand, the monster spat out several streams of venom in quick succession. Angered, it lunged at him, but he was quick to retreat.
The creature was fast and agile, following his steps as he backed away. It suddenly leaped onto land and slammed into him, causing him to stumble back several steps until he found himself leaning against a large rock.
The Mud Monster's weakness was its difficulty moving on land; it could only catch prey near the water's edge. So after that fierce collision, Xiao Qiang found himself safe for the moment.
The annoying hyena continued to taunt the Swamp Monster by jumping around near the muddy area. Xiao Qiang, still recovering from being knocked down, stared intently at the creature that was glaring at him from within the mud.
After that hit, Xiao Qiang had made an important discovery: this Female Swamp Monster was pregnant. He noticed its bulging belly and furrowed his brow as a plan formed in his mind.
Xiao Qiang turned and grabbed the barking hyena tightly before once again gripping the dagger bound with animal bones. He sprinted a few steps into the mud. Using the force of his knee strike, he raised the dagger high and slid it between the Mud Monster's legs, slicing open its abdomen.
He dashed past just in time to reach a stone staircase and turned back to see the wounded Mud Monster. It let out an unwilling screech as it attempted to leap forward; from its torn belly fell out a still-developing Swamp Monster fetus.
Monsters would be monsters; seeing that its prey had escaped its surrounding capture range, it could only bite down on the fetus that had just fallen from its body and swallow it piece by piece.
Disgusting! Ugh! Xiao Qiang spat as he brushed off the hyena that kept licking his hand. Resolutely, he stepped into the stone staircase nestled between the rocky cliffs.
After the stone steps, a whole new world unfolded before Xiao Qiang, something he had not anticipated. In hindsight, given the rush of that night, he should have guessed that their journey had taken them far from the Sun Tribe.
The environment here was harsh, situated in a death triangle. It was ominously designated as a danger zone, which allowed the carnivorous monsters to thrive and establish their dominance in this area.
As Xiao Qiang reached the end of the stone steps, he found himself in a vast open ground filled with grass and flowers. The hyena had transformed into a loyal companion, behaving more like a domesticated dog. It became his vigilant scout, barking loudly at the slightest rustle in the grass as a warning.
Those low-flying creatures made repeated attempts to attack Xiao Qiang but were thwarted each time by the hyena's warnings. They had become inseparable companions. Along their journey, they managed to hunt some edible animals, and Xiao Qiang fashioned a makeshift cart from wood to carry the surplus carcasses.
He was searching for a route back to the Sun Tribe, but the memories of that night’s hurried escape had become muddled in his mind. Whether it was due to lingering miasma or some other reason, it seemed that Xiao Qiang had lost his way.
As night fell, they could only take refuge in a cave to rest. Following his instincts, Xiao Qiang felt he was getting closer to the Sun Tribe village. If he had taken a wrong turn, he would have encountered either a desert or found himself on the path to Waji Mountain Tribe.
The cave also served as a habitat for unnamed creatures. Among the various species he encountered, this was the first time he saw such an unusual skull.
The skull was fresh and did not resemble that of a human. Holding it in his hands, he noticed that the hyena kept its distance, seemingly afraid, retreating with whimpers.
"Is one skull really that frightening to you?" Xiao Qiang examined it closely. The skull had a narrow face; if filled with muscle, it increasingly resembled the head shape of the legendary FUO Alien from his memories. Could this be an alien skull? Looking around the cave, there was an oddly familiar yet peculiar aura lingering within.
