I don't know how long it had been when a heavy panting sound jolted me awake. Opening my eyes, I thought I had arrived in the underworld as people say. Everything around me looked the same, with two men fighting fiercely up close.
As I focused my gaze, I recognized them. One was Yang Gang, and the other was Ye Liu Yun, who had almost choked me to death.
My head throbbed, and I couldn't remember when Yang Gang had appeared. In any case, Ye Liu Yun was mercilessly pinning him down, his hands tightly gripping Yang Gang's neck, and it looked like Yang Gang's life was hanging by a thread.
I could only cry out desperately, "Ye Liu Yun, let him go..."
Seeing me plead for Yang Gang, Ye Liu Yun's expression turned terrifying. He cursed at me viciously, "You shameless woman! No wonder you ignore me; turns out you're here stealing men."
"You... shameless..." I stumbled to my feet, trying to push Ye Liu Yun away and pull out the pinned Yang Gang beneath him, but my efforts were futile. Ye Liu Yun grabbed my collar and yanked me back, causing me to nearly crash into the wall. "Let him go! We need to settle our own matters," I screamed almost hysterically, but it was of no use.
Ye Liu Yun still wanted Yang Gang's life...
Just as I was about to rush in again to save Yang Gang, a shadow darted past from behind Ye Liu Yun. Suddenly, he started foaming at the mouth, his eyelids rolling back to reveal only the whites of his eyes; he looked truly terrifying. He struggled futilely before collapsing onto Yang Gang and becoming motionless.
After a long while, Yang Gang finally caught his breath and pushed Ye Liu Yun off him. He looked at me with concern and asked, "Ding Li, are you okay?"
"I'm fine..." At that moment, he disregarded his own safety and still thought of me. I felt genuinely moved and silently blamed myself for having been so rash in my doubts; it turned out everything had been a misunderstanding.
"That's good to hear." He spoke as he struggled to get up from the ground and leaned against me as we sat against the wall. "I know Gu Xiaofang; we were once in love."
"Then why did you tell me you didn't know her?"
"I was looking for her and suspected she might have been harmed by Yilan Shan. I lacked evidence. Plus, I didn't know you well enough at the time, so I had to lie." Yang Gang sighed deeply. "Xiaofang loved me too, but Yilan Shan obstructed us at every turn. Eventually, she decided to quit her job as a nanny and come help me on the farm. After that, there was no news of her. I've tried multiple times to find Yilan Shan, but she always claimed not to know where Xiaofang was."
"Alright! She's right there in that crevice; what do you plan to do?"
"Yilan Shan's family has thrived on raising evil spirits for generations and has harmed many innocent people. In the end, their family faced destruction; this is the consequence of their wicked deeds."
"Are you really a butcher?"
"Do you believe it?"
"I believe..." As I watched Ye Liu Yun struggle to stand up, I decisively dialed 110. As expected, Zhu Zhu was accidentally killed by Ye Liu Yun, but he would face the consequences of the law.
I asked Yang Gang why he came to find me at that moment.
He said that his intention to save me was actually a coincidence; my spying had angered him, and he originally wanted to use that opportunity to vent his frustrations. However, when he saw me being choked by Ye Liu Yun and losing consciousness, how could he just stand by? So he rushed in to save me without a second thought.
Ye Liu Yun and he wrestled for a while, and fortunately, I woke up in time; otherwise, Yang Gang would have been choked to death as well.
Yang Gang and I had no ongoing story; we owed each other nothing.
Yang Gang was not a butcher but a wealthy bachelor who made his fortune through farming. What he buried that day was not a corpse but his beloved dog.
It was said that this dog had been with him for several years. He had many ground squirrels on his land that caused destruction by gnawing at the seeds he planted. So he used rat poison to try to kill the ground squirrels, but unfortunately, the dog bit into one of the poisoned squirrels while playing and died from the poison.
Leaving Yilan Shan's home, I looked back at the dark door from a distance, as if I could see Gu Xiaofang and Yilan Shan's brother waving goodbye to me from the doorway.
In my heart, I thought: It's best not to meet again.
A bouquet of white chrysanthemums was my gift to Zhu Zhu. I silently wished her well; if there is indeed an afterlife, she must take care of herself.
This is a short story, not very long, written impulsively during my illness in my spare time.
During Ghost Month, there are many taboos. The reason I attracted vengeful spirits was because I whistled in the kitchen unintentionally. Whistling at night, as Yilan Shan once told me, can attract unclean things.
Also, previously, I heard someone calling my name. Yet when I didn't see anyone, I answered; this too is a matter of life and death. A lesson learned!!! From now on, I must be more careful.
Returning home from Zhu Zhu's grave, my mother asked where I had been lately and then insisted on taking me to find someone. This person was a peculiar guest from Aunt Chen's house, known for her strange practices. They all referred to her as Huang Xianpo. She seemed quite popular, with many neighbors coming to seek her fortune-telling services.
After the incident at Yilan Shan's house, I couldn't shake off the lingering shadow it left on me. In the past, I would have scoffed at my mother's actions, but now I just turned a blind eye, although I couldn't stand the way this person operated.
When my mother brought me before Huang Xianpo, she began to mumble something. Suddenly, her gaze fixed on me, and she glared fiercely, saying, "You little beast, why don't you reveal your true form?" I was startled by her sudden outburst and dared not speak, just waiting to see what she would say next.
She told my mother that there was something unclean following me...
Hearing this made me uneasy. Indeed! The events at Yilan Shan's house, Gu Xiaofang, and Yilan Shan's brother... Could it be that Yilan Shan had followed me?
Huang Xianpo acted seriously as she waved a peach wood sword, which she used to pick up a talisman. Lighting it on fire, she waved it over my head while chanting: "Heavenly spirits, earthly spirits, Grand Supreme Elder Lord, hurry forth as commanded..." Afterward, a piece of red cloth turned to ashes, and an image appeared in the nearly burnt remnants.
Huang Xianpo claimed that these were the dirty things following me. Whether it was true or not left me feeling perplexed; regardless, for peace of mind, my mother spent a considerable amount of money to settle the matter.
To this day, I still feel a sense of dread and regret for wearing that outfit. It truly became a source of anxiety that I couldn't shake off. Much later, while rummaging through my bag, I unexpectedly found the long-lost Guanyin Bodhisattva chain.
In any case, whether it's gods or ghosts, if you haven't done anything wrong, you shouldn't fear a ghost knocking at your door in the middle of the night!
(THE END)
