In the impression of women, as long as S.H.I.E.L.D. extends an invitation, almost no one would refuse.
With the identity of a S.H.I.E.L.D. agent, regardless of what one's previous identity was or whether they had committed crimes, all past offenses would be wiped clean. This was nothing short of a blessing for those burdened with debts and criminal records.
And Shasha was a killer; if her identity were to be exposed, she would undoubtedly be arrested.
Moreover, she had previously investigated and found that Shasha seemed to be a wanted criminal.
So, for someone like her to actually refuse? It was simply unbelievable.
After the shock wore off, the woman's expression turned cold. "Do you know what you are refusing?"
Shasha certainly knew what she was refusing. If it weren't for the System issuing a mission, she might have accepted; after all, this was a shortcut to clearing her name. But now it seemed that such a shortcut had been denied.
Though she felt bitter inside, she maintained a calm demeanor on the surface. "I understand your point, but I still refuse. After all, I need to carve out my own path in life."
"Your own path?" The woman mulled over this phrase for a moment before inexplicably smiling and then leaving without another word.
Watching the woman's retreating figure, Shasha couldn't help but ask, "You still haven't told me who you really are."
"In any case, I am not Kanna Malhos. As for who I am, you will find out later," she replied, leaving behind this cryptic statement before disappearing, taking with her that feeling of being watched.
Shasha knew that S.H.I.E.L.D. had given up on monitoring her. While she felt relieved, she couldn't help but recall the mutants; she still didn't know when the Warriors had started keeping an eye on her.
In the following days, everything was calm. Erika recovered from her injuries and began taking on new jobs again. Li Qianhuan also found a stable stage for his magic performances.
It seemed that life was peaceful and serene at the moment; however, it proved true that there is always calm before the storm.
When Shasha returned home from work and pulled out her keys to unlock the door, she sensed something unusual.
The door should have been locked three times before she left, but when she opened it, it was only locked twice.
In an instant, Shasha halted her movements. Her gaze fixed as she began to ponder whether someone had entered while she was away.
Stealing? Breaking and entering? It seemed possible. However, his intuition told him it wouldn't be that simple.
As he pushed the door open and entered the room, everything appeared normal at first glance, but there were signs everywhere that it had been searched. No one could restore a ransacked room to its original state, especially in the eyes of someone like Shasha, who had an exceptionally strong ability to read environments.
"It’s not theft since nothing valuable is missing. They were looking for something, but what could be hidden here?"
He quickly ruled out the possibility of being targeted himself; the only one who might be in trouble seemed to be his roommate, Erika.
Meanwhile, Erika was finishing a task when a shadowy figure in black suddenly appeared.
Glancing at the emblem on the figure's chest, Erika's gaze tightened as she discreetly gripped her Mitsubishi Steel Spike.
"Stick Sage wants to see you," the newcomer said in an oddly emphasized English.
Erika froze for a moment, then her tense muscles began to relax slowly. She took a deep breath and focused. "Lead the way."
The figure silently gestured and then leaped into the air, stepping onto the building and disappearing onto the rooftop.
After a brief pause, Erika followed closely behind.
Stick Sage, the leader of the American ninja group Purity Society, was also Erika's and Daredevil's mentor.
Like Daredevil, he was blind but possessed extraordinary senses and skills, evident from the way he trained someone like Daredevil.
Originally, Erika was part of Purity Society too, but for various reasons, she had distanced herself from them and vanished from Stick Sage's and Daredevil's sight, living as a solitary assassin.
She had thought it would always be this way until Shasha's arrival made her no longer alone. In fact, she had begun to entertain thoughts of completely letting go of her past. But just then, Stick Sage reappeared.
Erika couldn't ignore her master's request.
Thus, at the headquarters of Purity Society, Erika met her long-lost mentor.
Stick Sage was an elderly man who looked ordinary—old and short—but no one dared to underestimate him. Those who did ended up as stepping stones that helped him achieve his current status.
With his hands tucked into his sleeves, Stick Sage silently regarded one of his most prized disciples for a long time before speaking in his slow and aged voice. "My disciple, Erika, I need your help."
Erika was taken aback by the words. In her impression, her master was someone who never sought help from others. This was the first time she had heard a request for assistance from him, causing her expression to grow serious. "Is it the Hand-to-Hand Meeting?"
The Stick Sage nodded silently. "They have returned once again, and this time they intend to eliminate us in one fell swoop."
At this point, he suddenly coughed, a thin line of blood appearing in his palm.
Seeing this, Erika was alarmed and hurriedly wanted to step forward, but was stopped by the Stick Sage. "It's nothing serious. I encountered a few assassins from the Hand-to-Hand Meeting and have already crossed paths with them."
Erika remained in shock; in her memory, her master had never been injured. Could it be that the Hand-to-Hand Meeting had deployed their ace assassins this time?
"This time, besides you, I have also summoned Matt back. I hope you both can help the Purity Society through this crisis."
Upon hearing the Stick Sage mention this name, Erika's expression gradually became complex.
