Soon, the command from Rosa was relayed down, and the military tents began to be packed away as civilians started to move. From above, it would look like ants relocating their nest.
Rosa suppressed her emotions and began assisting the civilians in their evacuation, while the sounds of artillery fire from the left made her face pale.
The person responsible for the left flank defense was named Wei Qi. He was middle-aged, with a mature and resolute appearance. Originally a regular captain in the People's Liberation Army of China, he had risen to prominence during this crisis due to his bravery and fearlessness in the face of death, making his mission all the more critical.
The left flank was near the Tao Tie Legion's Wolf Star Fleet, which was quite formidable. The group known as Hounds had a keen sense of smell and were elusive; many officers had fallen victim to their assassinations. On the front lines, besides the Mechanical Glutton, there was also the Hound Assault Team, which posed a significant headache.
The defensive fortifications on the left flank had nearly collapsed under several rounds of enemy bombardment, and the casualties among the left flank guard were severe.
When the Messenger returned with orders, Wei Qi paused for a moment before resolutely choosing to carry them out. He understood Rosa's reasoning; this approach was indeed the most correct under the circumstances. Soldiers who entered battle were always prepared for sacrifice; otherwise, what was the point of going to war? It would be better to be a coward and die randomly in this chaotic world.
After counting the remaining personnel, Wei Qi gathered the surviving company and platoon officers and said solemnly, "Now our task is to cover the evacuation of civilians on the left flank. Even if we have to fight to the last man, we cannot let them pass through during this critical time!"
The officers exchanged glances before nodding in unison. The determination evident on their faces showed just how resolute they were, which only made Wei Qi feel guiltier. If possible, he did not wish for so many loyal and brave soldiers to accompany him to death.
But this was war; no one could change its course!
Ahead lay soldiers battling against Hounds, while behind them were evacuating civilians. Wei Qi tightened his grip on his automatic rifle, took a deep breath, and aimed through his scope at the charging Hounds.
Bang!
A shot pierced through one Hound's skull, splattering green blood everywhere. These wolf-like creatures possessed an incredibly strong sense of smell and could cloak themselves; ordinary ammunition could hardly hit them because they could detect gunpowder's scent and anticipate where bullets would come from. Only armor-piercing rounds could evade their senses.
Another shot exploded another Hound's head. Finally, Wei Qi drew the attention of the Hound Squad.
He saw a commander from a Hound assassination unit using binoculars to look over at him and whispering to his aide beside him, "Send in the vanguard to take this guy out!"
The officer, upon hearing the command, quietly instructed through the intercom. Soon, dozens of aircraft from the Wolf Fleet Group rushed toward the left-wing battlefield, while the assassination team on-site vanished from Wei Qi's sight.
"Strange, why did they suddenly retreat?"
Just as he was puzzled, dozens of aircraft collectively opened fire in his direction!
Wei Qi's pupils constricted as he shouted and dropped to the ground, instantly taking cover behind the defensive fortifications. Several officers beside him were caught off guard and fell dead immediately, leaving the entire command system of the left wing in chaos.
When Wei Qi peeked out to see what was happening, his expression was filled with deep sorrow. A man may shed tears but does not weep easily; it was just that he had not reached that point of heartbreak yet. The number of people standing on the left-wing position had dwindled to almost none; the Left Wing Forces were practically nonexistent.
As he watched the Tao Tie Legion advancing toward the position, Wei Qi's anger became difficult to conceal. He grabbed a heavy machine gun from a fallen soldier and charged straight at the enemy.
"You bastards! Come and kill me if you dare!"
The bullets struck the Mechanical Glutton troops, only slowing their advance without any other effect. However, with tears in his eyes, Wei Qi could hardly care about that anymore. The grief and rage within him were overwhelming; what was death to him? As long as he could die alongside his brothers, what was there to fear?
When the last soldier fell into a pool of blood, it seemed that Wei Qi was deliberately left until the end. The position had already been taken by the Mechanical Gluttons; above, their vanguard hovered while the assassination team reappeared on the ground, surrounding him layer by layer.
With one final bullet fired, Wei Qi tossed aside the heavy machine gun and reached for a grenade at his waist, his eyes filled with madness.
However, just as he prepared for martyrdom, he did not expect that those heartless aliens would suddenly shift their attention elsewhere.
In front of the Wolf Fleet Group stood a figure cloaked in tattered robes. He stood there on the horizon as if he were the only person in this world. An inexplicable aura of dread emanated from him, causing the Tao Tie Legion to feel as if they were facing a formidable enemy.
The Wolf Commander was taken aback, "Where did this guy come from?"
The lieutenant shook his head in confusion while commanding his subordinates to eliminate the intruder. To them, it was just a single person—what could he possibly do? It was merely a matter of a bullet.
As he surveyed the new type of warship before him, Shasha narrowed his eyes. It seemed that after Tao Tie, a new invading force had emerged. But what difference did it make? They were all just dogs raised by that Death God Karl.
Suddenly, a gray-skinned werewolf appeared before him, muscles rippling and wielding two alloy daggers, a savage grin on its face. In an instant, it vanished into thin air.
Shasha remained unfazed, his gaze unwavering. Suddenly, he felt a rush of wind behind him. He seemed to make no movement at all as the Hound flew backward, transforming into a splash of green blood mid-flight.
"Even weaker than the Mechanical Glutton," he muttered, shaking his head. He tore off his tattered cloak, his feet sinking slightly as he launched himself like an arrow toward the direction of the Wolf Fleet.
