Chapter 189: Soul Exchange
I opened my eyes and exclaimed, "Alright," only to realize that I had indeed become fat. I occupied the body of the overweight person—where did he go?
"Ma Qi, you need to handle these troublesome matters quickly. The fat one isn’t as lucky as you; if he’s not careful, he could be caught by the Underworld's Ghostly Enforcer and sent to the Underworld as a Lonely Ghost."
"Is this really okay? The fat one can’t get into trouble."
"Don't worry, he's having a lot of fun right now. Why don’t you use your Demon Eyes to take a look?"
I activated my Demon Eyes and stepped outside. At the entrance of Ma Wu Funeral Home, many Shadows were coming and going—some male, some female. There were as many Shadows as there were Baymax figures. The Ming Ghost Gate was already open. And our fat friend was chasing after a female ghost, who was indeed quite beautiful.
"Sister, hey, don’t walk so fast! Wait for me! Tell me your Name so I can remember it!" The fat one ultimately couldn't catch up with the female ghost and turned back to the entrance, standing beside me. Right now, he was just a wisp of soul, unaware that I had pushed out his spirit to occupy his body.
The fat one looked at his identical self in surprise and reached out to touch him. His fingers passed right through the skin, causing him to panic and shout, "Am I dead? What’s going on here?"
"Fat one, I’m your Brother Qi. There are some things that are hard to explain; we could talk for three nights and still not finish. Right now, you must stay quietly at home while I go take care of some matters."
"You... you are Brother Qi? Ghost Grandpa believes in you! Where did this Ghostly Thing come from? Do you know who my grandpa is?" The fat one was furious and anxious, pointing at the house and yelling at me.
"Your grandpa is Ma Wu; he’s been dead for almost two years. Fat one, you are Zhu Dachang. The magazine you were looking at is hidden under the mat; I pulled it out to remind you. There are many things that can prove I am Ma Qi, but there’s no time for that now—I need to save Chi Xinrong."
"Are you really Brother Qi?" The fat one cried mournfully as he reached out to touch his own face, tears welling up in his eyes. He looked pitiful as he said, "Brother Qi, I know you have abilities, but I don’t understand what’s happening. You must promise not to mess me up; I don’t want to die young."
"Yes, I promise to take care of your body as if it were my own."
I felt uneasy leaving the fat one behind and took a few steps to check on him again. Finally stopping, I turned to Stone: "Stone, why don’t you stay behind to protect the fat one?"
"I can’t do that; I have to be with you. This isn’t a joke—if I’m too far from you, your energy will weaken."
"What should we do then?"
"Hang the Bagua Mirror."
Stone was right; without hesitation, I hung the Bagua Mirror back up. The fat one seemed to understand something as he muttered to himself: "So that’s why you took down the Bagua Mirror! I was wondering how it could be taken down at a critical moment; turns out that person wasn’t you."
"Yeah." After ensuring the Bagua Mirror was properly hung, I clapped my hands and said to the fat one: "It’s safer for you to stay inside than outside. I won’t be gone long."
"Brother Qi, can you tell me who is impersonating you?"
Fat was afraid of Li Gui. I couldn't show myself, so I just smiled faintly and said, "It's nothing, just a bold and reckless ghost. I'll take care of him right away."
Without looking back, I strode confidently outside. Stone reminded me from the side, "Buddy, you can't walk like that. Fat walks with his head down; where's the momentum in that? You might get exposed before you even get close to Li Gui."
Stone truly is my lucky star. With his reminder, I could avoid a lot of trouble. Immediately, I pretended to walk like Fat, glancing around nervously and hunching my shoulders—it felt incredibly awkward.
I used Fat's phone to contact the imposter Li Gui. He told me over the phone that he was embarrassed by something that happened last night and was now lying in the hospital.
Li Gui is hospitalized? A terrifying demon is actually in a human hospital. Is he getting too immersed in playing the role of Ma Qi, or is there another reason? I wanted to know immediately.
On the surface, I feigned concern with a wooden expression and told him I would come to the hospital to see him. Inside, however, I was overjoyed, wanting to laugh but holding it back. I rushed to catch a ride and tried to contact Qin Jian while on the way.
Before I could even introduce myself, an anxious Qin Jian blurted out, "Chi Xinrong is now a director at City Hospital. She took over Chi Ruiqiang's shares after her uncle committed suicide; his body is still in the hospital mortuary. I heard Ma Qi got hurt in the eye; you should go check on him." I remained silent, my gaze drifting to the remnants of burnt joss paper along the roadside when Qin Jian asked again, "Hey, Fat, how did you get this number?" Damn it, Qin Jian is still someone from the station—meticulous and cautious with a level of vigilance most people lack.
Mimicking Fat's voice wasn't difficult.
I spoke in a deep voice, "Brother Qi gave it to me."
"Oh," Qin Jian replied and then added, "What's Ma Qi up to? He hasn't contacted me in days."
Only I knew why the imposter Li Gui hadn't reached out to Qin Jian. One reason was that he didn't know what kind of relationship Qin Jian and I had. The other reason was that as a police officer with righteous integrity, Qin Jian represented everything Li Gui feared as an Evil Sorcerer.
After hanging up, I thought of contacting Stone and asked, "Stone, are you still there?"
"I'm here all along, Master."
Talking to a stone felt surreal; it was hard to believe this was reality. Everything seemed like it was happening in a dream. If it weren't for an elderly woman appearing before me, I might have felt completely disoriented.
The old lady had no seat; she had just boarded the bus with her frail fingers gripping the armrest tightly. Every time the bus jolted, she swayed along with it. So many people seemed not to notice her; only I stood up to offer my seat.
"Grandma, please sit here." As I stood up, her cloudy old eyes fixed on me; her lips moved slightly as she said, "Thank you."
The elderly woman sat down.
The bus jolted again, and I accidentally bumped into a woman sitting in front of me. She turned her head and shot me a fierce glare that clearly said: "Pervert." Feeling guilty, I quickly looked away but found myself unable to move; Fat was too large for comfort as more people crowded into the bus—fat ones, thin ones, short ones, tall ones.
The car shook again, and the woman yelled angrily, "Get away from me, Fatty!"
Damn!
If Fatty ate less pork, he wouldn't be so fat. Yet he loved eating pork, especially the greasy kind.
"Buddy, you need to turn off Demon Eyes. Don't let Demon Eyes cause any trouble," Stone reminded me, and I quickly disabled Demon Eyes.
With Demon Eyes off, I could see inside the car clearly. Damn, there were hardly any people inside, and many seats were empty. The spot I had just given up for the old lady was also vacant.
What the hell! Is the old lady not a person? It had seemed so crowded earlier; it was all an illusion. The real situation was like a Ghost Festival, with ghosts everywhere—on the bus and on the road. It's best for ordinary people to stay indoors during Ghost Festival.
Sigh! No wonder that woman cursed at me. With so many empty seats available, I didn't sit down and instead pretended to lean against her. When the car swayed, I naturally bumped into her. So she felt confused by my actions and was angry about my casual touch.
