Severe Cold stood on the platform, his eyes unblinking as he watched the once brightly lit room dim one by one, like lights being extinguished by a fierce headwind. A wave of shock and fear surged through him. He shook the iron door desperately, but it remained stubbornly unmoving.
When Severe Cold saw the lights of Light flicker on one after another, his heart skipped a beat. His hand still rested on the iron door when it silently pushed open with a gentle nudge. Cursing under his breath, he called out for Ziya as he stepped into the corridor and made his way to the Baby Room.
“Ziya, what’s wrong?” Severe Cold entered to find Ziya crouched on the floor, her face as pale as paper.
“Uh... I’m so cold.” Severe Cold grabbed Ziya's hand, which felt like ice. As he held her hand, an intense chill rushed from her fingertips into his palm, causing a shiver to run through him. It felt as if someone had tightly gripped his heart, and he winced at the pain. The distance between them was minimal, and he could feel the icy aura emanating from Ziya, making him tremble involuntarily.
He helped Ziya up and wrapped her tightly in his arms, hoping to warm her frozen body with his own heat. The child's lifeless body still lay quietly on the bed, surrounded by motionless toys.
“Tomorrow we’ll bury him in his parents' Tomb, so they can rest together,” Severe Cold said to Ziya as he looked at the child’s body. He thought this would conclude their ordeal; they had found the child and surely nothing else would go awry.
“No... it’s not that simple, really...” Ziya replied with a blank expression.
“What else is there? Isn’t it just about wanting the child? We’ve found him; what more do you want? Don’t overthink it; it’s not as complicated as you think.” Severe Cold believed that Ziya was making things more complicated than they were and that this situation had left her in a nervous state.
Ziya weakly glanced at the child before leaving the Baby Room with Severe Cold's support. They decided to spend the night in the car, where there were blankets and everything needed to keep warm. There was food too, but Ziya had no appetite. Under Severe Cold's insistence, she reluctantly swallowed a bit of meat floss bread.
Severe Cold adjusted the air conditioning to a comfortable temperature while helping Ziya into the car seat. The temperature inside gradually rose. “When did you fix the air conditioning?” Ziya leaned back against her seat.
“I only had tools at home. Just in case, I went ahead and fixed it. Are you still cold?” He pulled Ziya's hand to his face, testing if she felt any warmth returning.
At that moment, Severe Cold's heart was also tense. After a heavy rain, a thick fog was sure to follow. In his past memories, such heavy rain was uncommon in spring; whether it was coincidence or something else didn’t matter as long as Ziya was okay.
"The rain is really heavy today. I don't remember such a downpour in spring," Ziya said, a slight blush appearing on her cheeks as she adjusted the blanket covering her.
Severe Cold, who had been watching Ziya intently, looked at her with a mix of affection and concern. "Are you still cold? This rain is quite sudden," he replied, smoothing the blanket around her while his gaze drifted to the window.
Outside the car window was an impenetrable darkness, obscuring the surroundings. The only visible sight was the brightly lit villa, its lights casting a hazy glow that felt almost surreal. At that moment, the villa resembled a slumbering beast, waiting for its prey to approach. The areas not illuminated by light were shrouded in deep shadows, creating an eerie atmosphere as if a monstrous entity was ready to devour anyone daring enough to intrude.
"Perhaps it's because humanity doesn't cherish the ecological environment, disrupting the natural ecological chain. That's why we see significant changes in climate and rainfall," Ziya tried to mask her emotions stirred by Severe Cold's care, but the moisture in her eyes betrayed her.
"Look at you, such an adorable little emotional bunny with eyes that could cry," Severe Cold teased lightly, pulling out a tissue to gently dab at her damp eyes.
The endless darkness of night enveloped everything in a tranquil yet mysterious ambiance. Night Mist gradually thickened, creeping in slowly and stealthily from all directions.
In the distance, the sound of Night Bats flapping their wings echoed as they navigated through the dark. Raindrops slid off the Mao Bamboo leaves above and fell to the ground. The villa's lights flickered eerily as if dancing in response to some unseen force. Inside the parked car at the villa's entrance, Ziya maintained her elegance, clutching the blanket tightly while her long eyelashes rested against her eyelids.
Even in sleep, Severe Cold seemed to keep an eye on Ziya. His profile faced her; any slight movement from her would rouse him instantly. A gust of cold wind brought with it a veil of mist that enveloped the car, while droplets from the Mao Bamboo continued to fall, making the already damp ground even wetter.
Silence reigned around them as the Mist Veil shifted gradually. The lights of the villa mysteriously vanished behind its cover, leaving only an echo of a rooster crowing nearby that stirred barking from dogs in response.
As night began to retreat, a blanket of white Mist Veil evoked endless contemplation. This Mist Veil could be seen as an elderly figure or likened to a vigorous young man; it could even be imagined as a wizard...
Suddenly awakened, Severe Cold found himself gazing at Ziya's peaceful sleeping face. Her brows were furrowed tightly even in slumber, and a faint, inscrutable smile played at the corners of her lips. What could she be dreaming about that would make her smile like that?
In her dreams, Ziya sensed a gaze fixed upon her. Her lips moved slightly before she abruptly opened her eyes, meeting Severe Cold's gaze just as he looked at her.
"Uh... didn't you sleep?" Ziya asked, frowning.
"I just woke up. Why don't you sleep a little longer?" Severe Cold said as he picked up a thermos from the car, opened the window, and poured some hot water onto a towel before handing it to Ziya. "Just wipe your face a bit to wake yourself up."
Ziya took the towel and casually wiped her face. She lifted her head, feeling a stiffness in her neck that was quite uncomfortable. While Severe Cold turned to grab something, she instinctively pushed open the car door, stepped out, and closed the door with a bit of force.
Once outside, Ziya felt something was off. The scene before her eyes was...
