That night, I dragged my exhausted body home. I fumbled for my keys and gently turned the doorknob. The room was pitch black, with only a sliver of light seeping from my parents' room. I changed my shoes and was about to step inside when suddenly, everything brightened, and my mother's sharp voice pierced the silence.
"Why are you so inconsiderate?" Mom frowned, her face filled with displeasure as she looked at me. "Can't you break up with Qin Jingyan for your sister's sake? You know her health condition; she just wants to marry Qin Jingyan. Can't you support her?"
Standing at the door, I listened to my mother's biting words, feeling as if my heart was being sliced open. I slowly walked into the living room, trying to keep my voice calm. "Mom, I have feelings too; Qin Jingyan is important to me."
Mom scoffed and interrupted me. "Important? Is he more important than your sister? Look at her condition! You're still fighting over a man with her—don't you have any conscience?"
I rolled my eyes and replied irritably, "Mom, can you be reasonable? You can't force feelings like this."
"Feelings?" Mom's voice rose an octave, dripping with sarcasm. "Can feelings put food on the table? Your sister needs real happiness right now, not your so-called feelings!"
Seeing that I remained silent only fueled her anger further. "Look at you! From childhood to now, what have you done better than your sister? And now you're trying to steal a man from her? You've really disappointed me!" Her sharp voice continued, "You're such an ungrateful child; what good is raising you all these years?"
In a fit of rage, I threw my handbag onto the floor and shouted, "Sister! Sister... All you care about is your sister! Yes, I'm the ungrateful one! What are you going to do about it?"
When Mom heard my outburst, she froze for a moment before...
"Su Yue, Mom really has no choice this time; I'm begging you..." Her voice suddenly rose several pitches as she spoke desperately. "I'm kneeling down for you, Su Yue; please have some pity for your sister..." Before she could finish her sentence, there was a dull thud as Mom dropped to her knees in front of me. I was instantly stunned, as if struck by lightning, unable to move.
"Mom, what are you doing? Get up; can we talk this through?" I rushed forward to help her up, but she refused to budge.
"If you don't agree, I'll stay like this." Mom's tone was resolute; she was determined not to get up until she achieved her goal. Seeing her like this made my heart twist in confusion—I didn't know what to do.
Just then, my usually quiet father suddenly seemed like a different person. He rushed over and yanked Mom up from the ground where she was crying.
"Look at what you've done to your mother! What have you forced her into?" Dad said angrily as he faced me.
My heart tightened. "I..."
"Don't give me that 'I' nonsense!" Dad interrupted me, his face filled with anger and disappointment. "Is it worth it for a man? Can he possibly be more important than your sister?"
"What do you mean by that?" I glared at him, my voice trembling with anger. "Why must I be the one to sacrifice? I'm also your daughter!"
Slap! Dad suddenly raised his hand and struck me hard across the face. Shocked, I covered my cheek as a burning pain spread rapidly.
"You know your sister's health condition! She just wants to spend some peaceful time with Qin Jingyan and fulfill her last wish." A flicker of disgust crossed Dad's eyes. "And what about you? For a man, you're making our whole family restless!"
"Why are you hitting me?!" My anger flared up fiercely. "Just because I'm not willing to sacrifice my love for my sister?"
Dad frowned as if he hadn't expected such a reaction from me. "What kind of attitude is that?"
"Attitude? You only consider my sister's feelings—have you ever thought about mine?" I shot back. "Since childhood, you've always favored her; no matter how well I do, you never see it!"
Mom tried to calm me down from beside us. "Su Yue, your sister..."
"Don't mention my sister!" I interrupted my mother's words. "She only thinks of herself and doesn't care about our family's feelings at all. She must get whatever she wants. She's truly selfish!"
"How can you say that about your sister? I think you're just infatuated with that man!" My father glared at me in anger. After hearing his words, I let out a cold laugh, casually picking up the handbag from the floor and slinging it over my shoulder.
"Mom, Dad, I'm really disappointed in you both." I coldly tossed this statement over my shoulder as I turned to leave the house filled with conflict and arguments. I knew that this home had changed, becoming strange and distant to me. And all of this was because of my sister's selfishness.
