One morning, I was buried in a pile of tedious work when the phone on my desk suddenly rang, the screen flashing "Mom" repeatedly.
"Hello, Mom?" I answered the call, a hint of impatience in my voice.
"Su Yue, you need to come to the hospital right away!" Mom's tone was urgent. "Your sister is not doing well."
"Oh, got it." I scoffed internally, thinking, 'What kind of trick is this now?' I hung up and returned to my work.
However, the phone rang again shortly after; it was Mom once more. I frowned and picked up the phone again. "Mom, I know. I'll come as soon as I'm done."
"Su Yue, your sister is in danger right now! You have to come immediately!" Mom's voice was now tinged with tears.
"I'm on my way." After saying that, I slowly stood up, grabbed my handbag, and walked toward the hospital. When I pretended to be out of breath and pushed open the ward door, I saw my parents gathered around my sister's bed. They looked up at me simultaneously with reproachful eyes as they heard the door open.
Dad's voice cut through the air like a cold blade, piercing my heart. "Su Yue, you should know what your sister wants most right now. She has always had a crush on Qin Jingyan; she liked him long before you two even met. You know how she is now; we hope you can step aside and fulfill her wish so she can be happy for whatever time she has left."
I stared at him in disbelief, unable to comprehend his logic. Anger flared within me: "Step aside? You make it sound so easy! Qin Jingyan is not an object; he is someone I love deeply! How can you say such a thing?"
Mom interjected with a blank expression, "Su Yue, you already have so much. You're young, educated, and capable; you have a long road ahead of you. But your sister doesn't have much time left. Can't you sacrifice a little for her?"
"Sacrifice?" I laughed bitterly, "You speak so lightly of it! You want me to sacrifice my own happiness to satisfy her wishes? I can't do that!"
Dad's face turned ashen in an instant; he suddenly slapped me hard across the face. The blow was fierce enough to make my vision blur and my ears ring; my cheek burned with pain.
Dad raised his voice a notch: "This isn't sacrifice; it's responsibility! We raised you and provided for you all this time; now it's your turn to give back to the family. As a member of this family, you have a duty to think about us. You must comply with our decisions."
Suddenly, the door burst open with a loud bang as Qin Jingyan rushed in, his face filled with concern.
"Su Yue!" he exclaimed urgently, locking his gaze onto me. "What happened? What did they do to you?"
I stood there stunned, unable to respond before Dad stormed over in anger.
"What are you doing here? This is none of your business!" Dad shouted at Qin Jingyan.
Unfazed, Qin Jingyan glared at my father and said firmly, "Her matters are my matters! How can you treat her like this?"
"I can discipline my own daughter; what does it have to do with you?" Dad retorted harshly.
Qin Jingyan was furious; he grabbed Dad by the collar and said fiercely, "She’s not just your daughter; she’s the one I love! If you lay a finger on her again, I will not let this go!"
As everyone's attention turned to Qin Jingyan, his sharp gaze shot toward Su Yi lying on the hospital bed, a cold smirk forming on his lips.
"Su Yi, you're quite something," Qin Jingyan began slowly, each word dripping with icy sarcasm. "Emotional blackmail? Breaking up? You're playing these tricks quite well. Do you think that by pretending to be pitiful, I'll soften and marry you? Don't dream!"
My sister lay pale on the bed, tears shimmering in her eyes as she turned her head away in feigned grievance and trembled as she spoke: "Jingyan, how can you say that? I just... I just love you too much."
"Love?" Qin Jingyan scoffed, interrupting her. "Your so-called 'love' is nothing but disgusting. Do you think pretending to be weak will earn you sympathy? It's utterly laughable!"
Tears welled up in my sister's eyes as she tried to sit up, only to be met with a fierce glare from Qin Jingyan that forced her back down. Helplessly, she lay on the bed, continuing her charade. "Jingyan, how can you be so heartless? I... I just want you to stay by my side."
"Enough!" Qin Jingyan shouted, his patience worn thin. "Su Yi, your pretentiousness and hypocrisy are nauseating. Do you really think your little tricks can fool me? Let me tell you, all I feel for you is disgust and hatred! Someone like you deserves to get cancer; it's the heavens punishing you. When you die, make sure to let me know—I’ll set off fireworks to celebrate your departure."
At those words, my sister's face turned as pale as a ghost, her lips trembling as she struggled to say anything. The air in the room felt frozen by Qin Jingyan's words, suffocating everyone present.
As I thought to myself, "Can this 'farce' come to an end? My sister must be exhausted from acting..." an unbelievable scene unfolded before me, prompting me to involuntarily exclaim, "What a performance!"
