As the old lady approached, A Zhi was terrified and quickly tried to sneak away. To his shock, the old lady suddenly appeared right in front of him.
A sharp kitchen knife hovered threateningly against A Zhi's neck, yet the old lady hesitated to strike. It seemed she had no intention of killing him; rather, she wanted him to assist her with something.
Reluctantly, A Zhi was led to a dry well. Following the old lady's instructions, he lifted an axe and chopped through the wooden cover sealing the well. Then, he descended to the bottom of the well using a rope.
In the dirt, he unearthed a bundle covered in symbols. After successfully bringing it back up, the old lady commanded him to open the package, and A Zhi obediently complied.
However, as soon as he unwrapped it, he was horrified to find a severed head inside, causing him to stumble backward in shock.
Thus began the revelation of a long-buried past.
The old lady had three children: a beloved son and two daughters. Shen Xin and De Xin were twins, but their mother favored her eldest son above all else.
Deprived of their mother's affection, the sisters shared a close bond. However, they were quite different; the elder sister Shen Xin was filled with jealousy and sought attention, while the younger sister De Xin was gentle and timid.
One day, Shen Xin accidentally dropped her shoe into the river. In an attempt to help her retrieve it, their brother tragically drowned.
Fearing their mother's wrath, Shen Xin deceived her sister into swapping shoes and falsely accused De Xin of causing their brother's death. From that moment on, their mother harbored even greater resentment towards De Xin.
Confined at home day after day, De Xin gradually developed a troubled mind and began seeing things that weren't there.
The old lady sought the help of the Mage for an exorcism, but the Mage used this as a pretext to take turns violating De Xin, both physically and psychologically, leaving her deeply scarred.
Eventually, overwhelmed by the burden of her suffering, De Xin chose to end her life by throwing herself into a well.
Fearing retribution, the master and apprentice deceived the old lady, claiming that De Xin had harbored too much resentment in life and could only have her head severed and sealed in the dry well. They then burned her body and suppressed it beneath the altar, finally sealing her belongings in the ancient house above.
Upon learning all this, Shen Xin was furious and questioned whether their mother had driven her sister to death.
During a fierce confrontation between them, Shen Xin slipped and fell into the well, dying instantly, leaving behind her newborn daughter, Xiao Qi.
However, as a ghost, Shen Xin believed she had not truly died. She remained by her daughter's side, watching her grow up little by little. Thus, during their previous visits to the grave and searches for Xiao Qi, it was only the old lady who was present in the car.
A Zhi could see Shen Xin simply because she was Xiao Qi's mother; in that moment of carelessness, she overlooked her own spiritual abilities.
In this cycle of cause and effect, the Mage ultimately faced retribution. Meanwhile, De Xin's spirit clung to her mother’s body, filled with hatred for her mother for pushing her into an endless abyss.
She placed her own head before her and compelled her mother’s body to repeatedly bow and apologize, seeking to quell years of grievances and resentment.
Just as it seemed the old lady would bow herself to death, granddaughter Xiao Qi rushed over: "Dad, isn't she here? Open your eyes! You are that perverted Taoist! He’s already dead; let go of Grandma! Grandma is gone. What will happen to Xiao Qi?"
Through A Zhi's persuasion, De Xin's initial kindness was finally awakened.
Gradually, she stopped. "Do you have any wishes? I can help you."
At these words, De Xin was moved to tears. She had never intended to harm anyone; she only wondered why fate had been so unfair to her.
In the end, she completely let go, hoping to be together with her sister forever, "Put me next to my sister."
After the truth was revealed, the old lady was taken away by the police, and she developed a severe mental illness.
At this point, one might think everything had come to an end. However, there was a shocking twist; behind all of this lay an even more powerful evil force.
In the police station, the dazed old lady recounted a chilling past.
The old lady's husband, A Qiang, had been a wealthy young master. One day, he had an affair with a maid in their household, and the old lady happened to discover this scene.
To vent her inner dissatisfaction, the old lady pushed the maid into a well and killed her.
From that moment on, their family was cursed.
Late at night, A Qiang heard the call of the Vengeful Spirit and inexplicably walked into the yard, then picked up a gun and pulled the trigger against his temple.
Moreover, the accidental fall of Shen Xin, the unfortunate drowning of the old lady's son, and De Xin's leap into the well were all due to that maid coming to claim her vengeance.
In the end, the maid returned to the old house, and the film concluded on a tragic note.
What is truly terrifying is not the tales of ghosts and spirits but rather the naked evil of human nature; in the end, good and evil are bound by the cycle of cause and effect.
