Chapter Seventy-Nine: A Love for Learning
Since Tony left, more people began to visit Bai Luo.
First came Hill Agent, the most straightforward of them all, simply coming to check on Bai Luo. Then there was Nick Fury, who appeared hurried and anxious, clearly still affected by the aftermath of the battle in New York City involving the Reincarnator.
He didn’t say much, just briefly updated Bai Luo on the situation, stating, “We suspect these individuals are from a distant planet in the far reaches of space, extreme terrorists.”
Bai Luo opened his mouth to speak; he wanted to ask how it was possible for humanity to exist everywhere in the universe. But then he remembered that this was the Marvel Comics universe, where the distinction between aliens and Earthlings was minimal—mostly just differences in skin color: green, yellow, or blue... Well, fine then.
Chen Han obediently closed his mouth and stared intently at Nick.
Nick Fury cleared his throat before continuing, “Also, you should be cautious. The electronic devices from twenty years ago were nowhere near as advanced as those today. Although it was dark that night, your face was still clear enough to be captured in a photo. In other words, you should be careful when you go out.”
Bai Luo nodded.
Fury still seemed uneasy. “You’re not going to be like Iron Man and boldly declare yourself as Iron Man, are you?”
“No way, don’t worry,” Bai Luo replied. “That would be too reckless. Besides, look at my hand.”
Fury said, “Even though your identity has been exposed, I…”
“Relax, relax. By the way, I need to request two days off.”
"You're going," Fury said.
Bai Luo smiled and replied, "First, I want to go back to China. This year, my country is hosting the Olympics, and I want to go back and cheer; second, I want to borrow Steve to take a trip to Kansas."
Fury looked at him with some suspicion. "Since when did you start asking me for leave?"
"Isn't it to show that I'm firmly following S.H.I.E.L.D. and will definitely obey the Director's orders?" Bai Luo said with a sincere smile.
Fury sized up Bai Luo from head to toe but ultimately said nothing more. "Because of the incident where you were attacked by Hydra, the Captain left last night to investigate. He probably won't be back for a while."
"There's no rush; my hand injury will take some time to heal anyway."
Nick glanced at him and said, "By the way, among those involved in the battle in New York, there was a sword..."
"Oh right, where did that guy's sword go? I have one that's exactly like it," Bai Luo said. "What a coincidence."
To be honest, Nick wanted to punch someone.
Bai Luo wore an innocent smile. He had anticipated this moment when he put away the Daoist's Flying Sword—after all, these Reincarnators stored their items in wristwatches, and he had only taken one trophy Flying Sword, which he would never hand over.
With books, there is length; without books, there is brevity.
Fury soon left, and Bai Luo found himself in a long recovery phase. Lorna stayed by his side, finding Bai Luo incredibly annoying, while he found her quite pleasant to look at. Fury clearly had reservations about Magneto's daughter, so he simply tossed her over to Bai Luo, leaving him to handle any unexpected situations.
Bai Luo was more than happy with this arrangement; as a patient, waking up to see a beauty like Polaris Sister was certainly beneficial for his recovery.
However, Bai Luo was not idle either. With twenty-five thousand points in hand and nothing else to do, he decided to explore how to spend these points.
With twenty-five thousand System points, he could even exchange for the most powerful Talisman in the System, but that would be a one-time use.
Exchanging twenty thousand points for a single-use Talisman, although the Talisman was of extremely high level, it would still be unwise to trade for something like an Iron Body Talisman, which was a durable status-type Talisman.
Moreover, after the battle in New York, Bai Luo noticed that both his Swift Movement Talisman and Iron Body Talisman had suffered significant wear and tear. The Swift Movement Talisman had endured over twenty years of use and had developed cracks in the talisman paper after the battle in New York, making it unreliable at any moment. The new Iron Body Talisman was in slightly better condition, but its runes were somewhat dimmed, and there was a deep mark running through the center of the Talisman that nearly severed the connection of the runes.
Bai Luo realized that the lifespan of these items was closely related to their frequency and intensity of use, as well as his own level of injury.
For example, if Bai Luo's wrist were forcefully twisted, the protective Iron Body Talisman would undoubtedly be greatly affected.
Furthermore, Bai Luo was acutely aware of his shortcomings. Although he could draw several types of Talismans now, they were merely imitations; he didn't truly understand what he was creating.
What was Bai Luo's greatest reliance on in this world?
Was it the Talismans or a rudimentary System?
The Talismans came from the System, yet Bai Luo's reliance lay with the Talismans.
What he needed was not just one or a few disposable Talismans but to learn this system and how to draw Talismans.
In the past, when Bai Luo had no points at all, he often had to settle for second best. But now things were different. Having teamed up with The Ancient One to kill a B-Class Reincarnator, he held twenty-five thousand points. While this amount couldn't be exchanged for anything high-end, low-tier items of this first level...
Bai Luo planned to exchange his twenty-five thousand points for two specific items.
One book was a beginner's guide to talismans, which included only a limited number of talismans, specifically over twenty basic Five Elements Talismans. These were simple effects like creating earthen walls or conjuring water and fire out of thin air. However, the book provided an analysis of simple runes.
Bai Luo wanted to learn not just how to draw talismans, but also how they were created. While this might seem useless at present, in the future, as Bai Luo mastered more talismans, the advanced ones would become exceedingly complex. They couldn't simply be replicated by copying others' work.
Moreover, Bai Luo harbored a bit of aspiration—if he could thoroughly learn the art of talismans, perhaps he wouldn't need a system at all; he could draw talismans on his own and even create new ones.
However, achieving that goal would likely take a long time.
After all, the world he had crossed into was the Marvel universe. If he had ended up in a primordial world, he might have made quicker progress—though, of course, in such a world focused on cultivation, he would also be at greater risk of dying quickly.
Bai Luo once again realized the importance of learning; whether one had crossed over or not, everything required effort and study!
And there was no need to rush. A towering building cannot rise from the ground in an instant. Bai Luo would take steady steps and eventually carve out his own path.
