Chapter Ninety-Eight: The Arrival of the Destroyer
At the same time, in Old Bridge Town, New Mexico.
It was already bright outside. Agent Phil Coulson had indeed found Jane's father, who was unconscious, and received a piece of news: "A person suspected to be Bai Luo knocked them out along with a homeless man, and even kidnapped Jane Foster and that homeless man."
Coulson had anticipated this, but he couldn't help feeling a surge of frustration.
Although Bai Luo had joined S.H.I.E.L.D. quite early and did so with remarkable ease—almost comparable to Captain America, the embodiment of American capitalism—there was a rather inappropriate way to describe it: the two had vastly different levels of moral awareness.
Captain America was a paragon of virtue; he did whatever the organization asked of him and independently tracked Hydra in his spare time to eliminate threats to the people. In stark contrast, Bai Luo seemed to do the opposite, constantly leading S.H.I.E.L.D. agents on wild goose chases.
The loud noise from last night and Aurora were no secret; it had already spread throughout Old Bridge Town. Coulson's security personnel and research team quickly took their positions, and they speculated that some sort of spatial teleportation phenomenon had occurred here last night, with something being transported from an Alternate Dimension. However, it had now vanished...
Coulson was certain that those things had been taken away by Bai Luo.
He was determined to bring Bai Luo back.
Just as Coulson was fuming about retrieving Bai Luo, the latter was leisurely walking into a fast-food restaurant commonly found in Old Bridge Town.
As luck would have it, just as he entered, he spotted an old acquaintance standing at the counter.
The man was burly and strong, with hair resembling that of a beast... who else could it be but Wolverine, Logan?
Bai Luo was slightly surprised. After thinking for a moment, he called out directly, "Logan?"
Logan turned his head and saw Bai Luo also displaying a look of surprise.
Soon, the two settled down in a corner of the place. Bai Luo ordered a milk bread, while Logan opted for a beef burger and a beer.
Such a way of eating could probably only be seen with Logan.
Logan and Bai Luo were old friends, and he quickly confessed the reason for his presence here.
Phoenix Girl Jean Grey was missing.
After the last Strike Incident, Jean had disappeared in the flood, and many were unwilling to believe that she was truly dead. Logan was one of them. Recently, he felt as if he often heard Jean's voice—a dreamlike sensation, as if someone was whispering in his ear.
If it were anyone else giving Logan this feeling, he would never believe it. But Jean was a top-tier psychic mutant, and the possibility of her seeking help in this manner was quite high.
Thus, he ignored Charles's advice and began his search for Qin Grey.
The reason he came here was simple: it was evident that some kind of unconventional physical phenomenon had occurred, and he mistakenly thought it might be something Qin Grey had caused. In a rush, he came over to clarify the situation.
However, after asking many people along the way, the folks in Old Bridge Town seemed unclear about the specifics.
Fortunately, when he encountered Bai Luo, he found the right person.
Bai Luo poured cold water on Logan's hopes and accurately informed him that this was some sort of extraterrestrial teleportation phenomenon to Earth, with no connection to Qin Grey whatsoever.
Upon hearing Bai Luo's words, disappointment flickered across Logan's face. Clearly, he still held great hope that Jean might be here.
Logan let out a breath and said, "So, your appearance here means..."
Bai Luo replied, "Oh, I'm with S.H.I.E.L.D., just here to investigate."
His nonchalant attitude would surely infuriate Fury Agent if he heard it; that good-natured agent would probably jump up in anger.
But before Bai Luo could continue boasting, the door of the fast-food restaurant swung open, and several men in black suits and sunglasses strode in without a word, heading straight for the table where Bai Luo and Logan were seated. One of them spoke up directly, "Agent Bai, we have an urgent situation that requires your assistance. Please come with us immediately."
Logan asked, "S.H.I.E.L.D.?"
Bai Luo nodded.
Logan, being straightforward as always and having a good relationship with Bai Luo, said, "Is there anything I can help with?"
Hearing this, Bai Luo couldn't help but feel a mix of amusement and exasperation; he knew Coulson was just trying to lure him into going along.
However, before Bai Luo could say anything further, a loud explosion erupted from the direction of Old Bridge Town, accompanied by chaos and a series of thunderous sounds.
The S.H.I.E.L.D. agents immediately turned pale. Noticing their expressions, Bai Luo realized they were clearly unaware of what was happening outside. In a flash of insight, he suspected this might be Asgard's response to his "extortion." Without hesitation, he stood up and shamelessly echoed Logan's words, "Then I guess I should thank Wolverine."
With that, he headed outside.
Seeing Bai Luo's expression, Logan set down his empty bottle and followed closely behind him as they both made their way outside.
Indeed, something serious had happened out there.
A towering figure, over two meters tall, known as the Iron Giant, was striding toward the edge of the town. Its faceplate was lowered, and it spewed forth an intense, scorching flame that swept across the ground, igniting everything in its path. The residents of Old Bridge Town were caught completely off guard by this calamity, screaming and scattering in all directions.
Notably, despite its fiery breath, this creature seemed to target buildings rather than people.
At the feet of the massive fire-breathing Iron Giant stood a group clad in ancient European battle armor—three men and one woman—dressed in outfits that could only be described as bizarre for this era. They wielded various primitive weapons, and the leader, a man with a full beard, shouted at the top of his lungs, "Who has kidnapped our Prince Thor? Bring him forth voluntarily, and we will no longer pursue this matter. Otherwise, we will bring destruction and disaster."
These individuals were clearly loyal companions of Thor from Asgard, and they were precisely who Loki had sought out first—they were determined to retrieve their future king at any cost.
However, being self-proclaimed deities from Asgard, they would not casually engage in slaughter on Earth. Of course, Loki did not care how many Earthlings perished; he needed to leverage this group's strength without resorting to indiscriminate killing.
Meanwhile, Bai Luo immediately recognized what that massive iron figure was.
It was the destroyer of Asgard.
