Lu Yuan stayed behind alone to fight off the guards, covering for me and Zhou Yu. The energy weapons in the guards' hands were incredibly powerful. Despite Lu Yuan's bravery, he was gradually falling into a disadvantage.
At that critical moment, a loud explosion echoed, blowing a large hole in the base's wall. A group of people dressed in black combat uniforms rushed in. It was the Resistance Organization! They engaged in fierce combat with the base's guards, and gunfire and explosions filled the air.
In the chaos, Zhou Yu and I managed to escape, but Lu Yuan was trapped inside the base. I had to go back to save him!
As I fled, memories of my time with Lu Yuan flooded back. I suddenly realized that I might have misunderstood him all along. His silence wasn't due to indifference; it stemmed from carrying too many secrets. His sensitive reactions to words like "war" and "past" weren't because he was a Zeta Alien, but because he had experienced real warfare—the apocalyptic battle that drastically reduced Earth's population.
I recalled the deep scar on his arm, identical to the scars I had seen on members of the Resistance Organization. With the help of the Resistance Organization fighters, we navigated through the complex underground passages until we finally reached a hidden entrance.
Passing through the entrance, we entered a vast underground space filled with bright lights and soldiers in black combat uniforms. This was the secret base of the Resistance Organization.
"This is the 'Fire Seed' base, the core of the Resistance Organization," explained one of the soldiers who had assisted us. "You should rest here for a while; I'll report to 'Pioneer.'"
"Pioneer?" It was my first time hearing that title.
Zhou Yu seemed injured as well; his face was pale as he leaned against the wall, gasping for breath. I helped him sit down, my heart filled with worry.
After a while, the soldier returned, accompanied by a tall, resolute-looking middle-aged man.
"You must be Lin Mengyao? Lu Yuan mentioned you," said the middle-aged man. "I am 'Pioneer,' the leader of the Resistance Organization."
I quickly stood up and said urgently, "Lu Yuan is trapped at 'Zero Base' while covering for us! We must rescue him as soon as possible!"
"Pioneer" nodded and replied, "Lu Yuan is our best warrior and a key figure in the 'Fire Seed Project. We will certainly do everything we can to rescue him."
I finally understood. Lu Yuan was not a Zeta Alien; he was a member of the Resistance Organization! He was an undercover agent infiltrating the Reproduction Plan! He had been secretly protecting me all along; he was the one truly worthy of trust!
"What about the Fire Seed Project?" I wondered aloud. What was that?
I recounted to Pioneer my experiences at Zero Base, including the mysterious book and the Fusion Experiment. After listening, Pioneer furrowed his brow. "It seems we still know too little about the Zeta Aliens. We need to decipher that book as soon as possible to gather more information about them."
"Regarding that book..." I hesitated before speaking. "Chen Xinghe seems to know a lot about it; perhaps he can provide some assistance."
Pioneer's expression grew serious. "Chen Xinghe? Are you sure he's trustworthy? We previously suspected he might have connections with the Zeta Aliens' Fusion Faction, but we lacked evidence."
"Are you saying... Chen Xinghe is an accomplice of the Zeta Aliens?" A chill ran down my spine as I recalled Chen Xinghe's suspicious behavior and his appearance at Zero Base. I increasingly felt that Pioneer's suspicions were justified.
Just then, a soldier rushed in. "Report to Pioneer! The perimeter security system has detected intruders! Judging by their size and movement patterns... it’s likely Chen Xinghe!"
"How did he find this place?" A flicker of surprise crossed Pioneer's eyes, quickly replaced by determination. "It seems we have no choice but to face reality."
My heart was filled with shock and unease. What did Chen Xinghe's arrival truly mean?
