I suddenly remembered that the dashcam in my husband's car was something I had bought, and I had downloaded an app on my phone that allowed me to check the driving records at any time.
After returning home, I pulled out the app and spent the entire night going through the driving records. Finally, I discovered that a strange man had tampered with my husband's car. Coincidentally, this man bore an uncanny resemblance to my husband's son.
Oh, this was going to be interesting. It seemed that the Secretary had conspired with this man to harm my husband. But without evidence, the police would surely not believe my baseless speculation.
I recalled that during a public relations campaign at work, I had collaborated with several reporters. If anyone could investigate the truth besides the police, it would be them. I found a reporter's WeChat in my contacts and reached out to him, asking for his help in uncovering the truth.
Initially reluctant, he was eventually persuaded by a combination of hefty payment and sensational intrigue.
The following days were eerily calm, like the stillness before a storm. Just as I anxiously awaited evidence, the Secretary took the initiative to arrange a meeting with me:
"If you want to know your husband's secret, meet me at North City Happiness Hotel."
Eager to find evidence, I readily agreed: "Alright, tomorrow at 3 PM. Don't be late."
The next day, I arrived punctually at North City Happiness Hotel, where the Secretary was waiting for me in the lobby.
Upon seeing me, she waved her hand. I walked over and sat down across from her.
"Go ahead, what secret do you want to tell me?"
The Secretary looked at me with unmasked hatred in her eyes and said fiercely, "You've got some nerve coming here alone. Aren't you afraid I might harm you or even kidnap you for ransom?"
I smiled faintly and replied, "Unless you no longer care about saving your son, I’m probably the only one who can help him now."
Just this morning, someone from Usury told me they had approached my mother-in-law and the Secretary. Not only did they deny that the loan document was signed by my worthless husband, but they also called the police and had those debt collectors arrested. Wasn't that slapping their boss in the face?
That afternoon, those people kidnapped the Secretary's son, threatening her to withdraw her report and pay money.
When I mentioned her son, the Secretary's eyes widened in shock. "How do you know? Did you do it?"
I rolled my eyes in silence. How could she have put her own son in such a predicament without realizing it? When she saw me getting up to leave, she immediately grabbed my hand.
"Don't go! I... I will tell you everything! Just give me the money to get my son back!" She bit her lip, conflicted for a moment, then finally made up her mind. "Come with me to my room; there are too many people here to talk."
I slowly pulled my hand away, neither agreeing nor refusing, planning to hear her explanation first. But once we entered the room, she eagerly locked the door and grinned maliciously.
"I didn't expect you to be so easy to fool. No wonder you can be played around by a man like Su Nan."
"You probably don't know this, but that child isn't even his. The paternity test you received is fake. That fool Su Nan flaunts his wealth everywhere, and we've had our eyes on him for a long time. Who knew he was just a fake rich kid? The money he spent on me was all borrowed from Usury; what bad luck!"
It seemed Usury had driven her into a corner. I discreetly dialed the police with my hand hidden in my pocket, maintaining a calm expression as I asked, "What about the child's father? Why isn't he coming out to see him?"
The Secretary was stunned into silence, her mouth agape.
A man walked out from the inner room and scolded the Secretary, "Idiot! Can't you tell she's fishing for information?"
The Secretary looked at him with a hurt expression but didn't dare to retort. He stepped closer to me, sizing me up several times before whistling and grinning lewdly.
"You're truly the daughter of a wealthy family—fair-skinned and beautiful; you look different."
Upon hearing him compliment me, the Secretary immediately pushed him away in annoyance, prompting him to sneer coldly.
"Call your parents right now and tell them to prepare ten million, or else just wait for your body to be collected!"
I couldn't tell if these two had watched too many Hong Kong movies. It was 2023, and they were still trying to imitate kidnappings. I rolled my eyes in disbelief and kindly advised them, "Even if you get the ransom, you won't be able to escape. Stop dreaming; you might as well turn yourselves in. I can sign a letter of understanding and drop the charges."
The Secretary shot me a glare and cursed, "What do you think you are? Even a man like Su Nan looks down on you. He keeps telling me how boring and arrogant you are, acting like a princess. If it weren't for your family's money, he wouldn't even bother with you."
"With your temper and inability to please a man, any guy who marries you would be incredibly unlucky!"
I glanced at the phone that was still connected to the police and pretended to be so angry that I slapped her across the face. The Secretary wasn't about to back down either; she fought back against me.
