It was summer, and most people preferred to drive with the windows closed and the air conditioning on.
The taxi driver glanced at Yelai but didn't say much. If the passenger didn't want the air conditioning on, that was fine by him; it would save some fuel.
Was the young man planning a date?
When mentioning a movie theater, most people would think about watching a film with someone they liked. The taxi driver couldn't believe that someone as handsome as Yelai would go to the movies alone.
"No, just handling some business."
"What kind of business can you handle at a movie theater? Are you planning to sneak in and record a movie for piracy? You’re too good-looking for that kind of work."
"Old man, if I told you what I do, you wouldn’t believe me."
"Oh please, I've seen all sorts of things in my line of work. There’s nothing I haven’t encountered. Go ahead, tell me what you do; I won’t doubt you."
"I pay the price for Sequence."
"Huh?"
The taxi driver nearly dropped his steering wheel, looking at Yelai as if he had seen a ghost.
"You’re a Sequencer? No way! You pay the price for Sequence at a movie theater?"
Living in the Era of Sequence, even ordinary people had a basic understanding of it.
The taxi driver laughed and scolded him playfully. "You really know how to joke around! How could a Sequencer pay for anything related to movies? You can't fool me; we’re just ordinary folks, but we know a bit about Sequence."
"A Sequencer paying the price for Sequence is harmful to oneself, at least subtly harmful."
"You say you pay the price for Sequence at a movie theater? I can’t imagine how that could be harmful to anyone. Are you... doing something inappropriate?"
At a red light, he laughed and made a guess. "There are indeed some perverts who might watch characters in movies or people in theaters and engage in indecent behavior secretly. Hahaha!"
"Not to mention, it’s possible! After all, overindulgence can be harmful to one’s health. You don’t look very old; doing too much of that can be even worse for you."
The taxi driver continued chatting away.
Switching to another Sequencer, the Taxi Driver wouldn't dare to make fun of him, but he felt free to tease Yelai because he always believed Yelai was joking.
"Hey, buddy, we're done here."
"How much?"
"Just a few bucks. Remember to pick a romance film; girls love those. You can enjoy it later, haha."
Yelai paid and got out of the car. He waved goodbye to the Taxi Driver and turned back to glance at the mall. He sniffed the air from the top level of the mall and then smiled.
It was the scent of fear. Compared to those haunted places in Cthulhu Town, it was much easier to pay the price here in the Safe Zone.
He walked into the mall, heading straight for the top floor. Most of the mall's cinemas were typically located there.
Before long, Yelai found the cinema. It was evening, peak time for moviegoers, and there were many people inside.
He observed as several people queued to enter and others exited after watching their films.
"Can I help you?" a smiling attendant at the cinema counter asked.
"I'd like to buy a movie ticket. Can you help me get one? I want to watch something but I'm not sure what's playing."
"Of course! What kind of movie are you interested in? Here are the films currently showing." The attendant pointed to the screen displaying the listings.
Yelai didn't look at it; he just smiled.
"I'll take a ticket for the latest Unknown Horror film."
Unlike what the Taxi Driver suggested, Yelai chose not to buy a romance movie ticket but instead opted for a ticket to the most Unknown Horror film available.
