On the way back, Yelai sat in the passenger seat, rolling down the window as usual to catch a whiff of the fear lingering in the air. Fear was one of humanity's most primal energies. In any place where humans existed, there would inevitably be fear stemming from various sources.
Though they sped past quickly, the scent of fear was still present, even if faint. After all, even the smallest mosquito was still flesh. Whether it was from being killed three years ago or spending three years outside Cthulhu Town, Yelai had come to deeply understand how helpless one could feel when weak. He did not want to remain weak; he only wished to find a way to grow stronger.
Yelai would not miss any opportunity to absorb the scent of fear. What if? What if he caught a whiff along the way and discovered a place saturated with fear? That would be a feast for him. If he could absorb more fear every day, it wouldn't be long before he could touch the threshold of Rank and advance to the next Rank.
He contemplated his evening harvest. During those three years outside Cthulhu Town, he had been in a world filled only with Anomalous Entities, devoid of humans. Advancing through Sequence there was incredibly difficult. The Anomalous Entities in that realm were all high-ranked and extremely dangerous. Each battle fought for advancement was a life-or-death struggle, bringing Yelai face-to-face with death time and again.
Aside from that, Yelai could only advance by absorbing fear. However, in the world of Anomalous Entities, finding even a hint of fear was challenging, let alone large quantities to absorb. But now things were different. The human world was exhilarating.
Yelai felt an unprecedented sense of joy. For others, reaching Rank Three or Four was an almost insurmountable challenge for Sequencers, and continuing to advance afterward would be even more difficult. Yet for Yelai, returning to the human world made him feel that the difficulty had not increased much at all; in fact, it might have decreased significantly.
Absorbing fear was no longer particularly challenging.
The greatest obstacle I face now is the harm caused by Absorb Fear. Thinking about advancing my Rank, Yelai pinched the bridge of her nose.
The reason why Sequencer advancement becomes increasingly difficult is not just because improving Rank is challenging; the main issue lies in the damage inflicted by paying the price. Whether it's fighting an Anomalous Entity to enhance my Rank or paying the price directly to improve it, both paths involve consequences. In the former, once combat begins, one must utilize Sequence Power, which inevitably incurs a cost. The latter is even more straightforward—it's all about paying the price.
Regardless of which route one takes, there are always physical or mental damages to contend with due to the costs involved. This is also the fate that most Sequencer face: either dying while paying the price or suffering multiple times from the damage caused by Sequence after having paid the cost.
For these reasons, Sequencer humans are seen as exalted beings, yet they are also tragically doomed, with endings that rarely bring peace.
"Sister Yinlin, I'm back," Yelai announced as she opened the door and stepped inside.
Zhang Yinlin immediately set down the dishes she had brought from the kitchen and approached Yelai, scrutinizing her closely. "Have you already paid the price?"
"Yes," Yelai replied with a smile and a nod.
Seeing Yelai lively and full of energy, showing no signs of harm from having paid the price, Zhang Yinlin finally relaxed her tense heart. It was astonishing that despite being labeled as a "useless key," Yelai appeared completely unscathed after all.
Zhang Yinlin clicked her tongue in wonder.
