In the next two days, Yelai followed Zhang Yinlin's arrangements and took on a clerical job at the kindergarten. During the day, he worked at the kindergarten, playing with the children outside the classroom during breaks. In the evenings, he returned home with Zhang Yinlin and would watch a horror movie together after dinner.
Over these two days, due to his relationship with Luo Zhenxue, he was often recognized on the streets and pointed at. Yelai was unfazed by this attention; he didn't care about the opinions of those around him and even joked with the children during breaks about his identity as a "useless key."
Zhong Zhi had people keeping an eye on everything. Not only Zhong Zhi but also the kindergarten teachers, the children, and later visitors like Captain Zhao and other Sequencers all believed that Yelai had come back to life and finally recognized reality. They thought Yelai was aware of his differences from Luo Zhenxue, which is why he chose to settle down and find a job at the kindergarten.
"Students, have you all put on your tracking devices? Open your backpacks so I can check," Yelai said as he inspected each child's backpack neatly lined up at the kindergarten entrance. Today was the day Zhong Zhi had arranged with Zhang Yinlin to take the children outside the Safe Zone to see an Anomalous Entity.
He fussed over them like a mother, checking carefully and reminding each child of safety precautions. "Is that really Yelai? He looks just as handsome as they say."
"What? Are you interested?"
"I have no interest whatsoever; it's just a pity he's good-looking but is a useless key."
The two Female Sequence Holders exchanged whispers while chewing gum, eliciting teasing remarks from their male teammates nearby.
"That useless key? You could keep him as a male slave."
The teasing male teammate knew well that these two, relying on their Sequencer status, were more extravagant than most men and had kept quite a few male slaves for themselves.
"That's not a bad idea, but it would need Captain Zhong's approval."
"He definitely won't agree."
As members of Zhong Zhi, they understood that Yelai was merely a stepping stone for returning to the Numbered Protection Zone.
However, just because they couldn't capture Yelai didn't mean they had given up.
The two exchanged gazes, each understanding the other's intent. Although they couldn't capture her now, they could still kill Yelai first and then train her before finishing her off later; this was a request that Zhong Zhi would agree to.
"Let's get this done quickly; I'm eager to start."
"Me too. I've never trained someone so handsome before."
Soon, everything was arranged.
"Brother Zhong Zhi, I’ll leave the rest to you. When you return victorious, drinks are on me."
"Alright, I’m definitely going to enjoy that drink, Brother Yelai."
Zhong Zhi laughed heartily as he bid farewell to Yelai and led his group toward the southern gate of the Safe Zone.
Watching them depart, Yelai returned to the kindergarten.
Before long, he had prepared himself and easily evaded the surveillance, sneaking out of the kindergarten. Disguised, he made his way to the southern gate of the Safe Zone, using the fake identification created by Zhang Yinlin to exit the Safe Zone.
The scenery outside was starkly different from that within the Safe Zone. The towering fifty-meter walls seemed to separate not just places but entire worlds. Inside was bustling and lively, filled with people coming and going in harmony. Outside, however, was lifeless and oppressively quiet.
The road outside the southern gate of the Safe Zone was old and in disrepair, surrounded by numerous houses that had succumbed to moss and creeping vines after five years since the End of the Sequence.
Aside from the rustling sounds of wind passing through flowers and leaves and the occasional scurrying of small animals, it was eerily silent everywhere.
