Sensing the scent of fear emanating from Gaze, Yelai grabbed the Small Orange Cat possessed by Gaze and couldn't help but lean in closer to smell it. It had been a long time since he had encountered the fear scent of an Anomalous Entity. Now, smelling it again brought back a sense of nostalgia.
The Small Orange Cat struggled in Gaze's possession, feeling Yelai's eerie and perverse smile as he drew closer to sniff. Instinctively, it was afraid.
"Don't struggle; you can't escape," Yelai said, his voice dripping with a chilling calmness. "Even if you manage to run away, it doesn't matter. No matter where you go, I will chase you to the ends of the earth."
As those words hung in the air, Gaze felt a shiver run down its spine at the sight of Yelai's twisted smile, his lips curling in a way that sent a jolt of panic through it. The cat struggled even more fiercely.
Yelai paid no mind to its thrashing; instead, he greedily inhaled the scent of fear that clung to it. He wasn't worried about Gaze escaping. Even though Gaze was radiating fear at that moment, he knew that even if Gaze tried to blend in with other creatures to hide, he would still find it.
Fear has a distinct scent. Different beings emit different scents of fear. Even among various Anomalous Entities, the fear they exude is unique.
No matter how much Gaze tried to disguise itself, it still emitted the unmistakable scent of an Anomalous Entity's fear, which was different from that of a human.
Yelai leaned in closer to take in Gaze's fear scent, memorizing it like a fingerprint. Just like fingerprints are unique to each individual, for Yelai, the scent of fear served as a distinguishing mark that allowed him to identify and differentiate between entities.
It smelled so good, reminiscent of the aroma of savory pancakes, making him feel hungry. Yelai took another deep breath.
His expression resembled that of a devoted pet owner; rather than dealing with an Anomalous Entity, it looked more like he was simply enjoying petting and sniffing a cat.
"Why is Yelai so quiet?" wondered the Fifth Squad Captain, scratching his head in curiosity.
Yelai chased the Small Orange Cat, keeping a distance from them so they couldn't hear what he was saying.
"Is something wrong with Yelai?" he worriedly asked.
"It should be fine," Uncle Zhou replied. "If something were wrong, we wouldn't still be standing here."
Just as they were curious, Yelai's reprimanding voice echoed again, faint but audible from afar.
Yelai placed the Small Orange Cat, possessed by Gaze, on the ground and commanded once more, "Sit down! Can't you understand? I said sit down!"
He stepped towards Gaze, ready to teach it a lesson before issuing the command again. "Sit down."
After several attempts at taming it, the Fifth Squad Captain called out from a distance, cupping his hands around his mouth to amplify his voice. "Yelai, are you trying to tame Gaze?"
"Yeah," Yelai replied.
"It's really taming," the Fifth Squad Captain said with a wry smile and a shake of his head. "Maybe you should stop trying to tame it. That's an Incorporeal type Anomalous Entity; it's not easy to tame."
Uncle Zhou chimed in at that moment. "He's right, Yelai. Incorporeal Anomalous Entities are hard to tame. In fact, no one has ever successfully tamed one; it's extremely difficult."
Facing their discouragement, Yelai smiled and responded, "Uncle Zhou, Wu Team, that's exactly why I want to tame it—because it's difficult."
"But Gaze lacks intelligence and is filled with a murderous instinct. It's not something you can tame easily. At least find an Anomalous Entity that can be tamed," they urged.
The Fifth Squad Captain had no intention of giving up on persuasion. Indeed, there was no need to hang oneself on a single tree when a vast forest awaited exploration.
Uncle Zhou chimed in, not wanting to see Yelai waste time on something impossible. Yelai smiled and continued to gesture for Gaze to sit down, saying, "Uncle Zhou, Wu Team, taming Gaze is not out of the question. Our human ancestors once tamed wolves, cats, and horses, all of which were filled with primal wildness and lacked intelligence. Yet our ancestors ultimately succeeded in their taming efforts."
Once again, Yelai gestured towards Gaze, commanding with hand signals, "Sit!"
Uncle Zhou and the Wu Team observed that Gaze lacked intelligence and only possessed the instincts of a primitive creature. It could mimic human speech and behavior, which indicated that its instincts included the ability to disguise itself. Therefore, Yelai believed that if it could imitate human actions and speech, there was a chance for him to tame it.
As Yelai spoke, he struck Gaze again and added slowly, "As long as it can execute the commands I give it to mimic various human behaviors."
Not far from Yelai, Xiao Jun tilted his head with a look that suggested he understood only partially. He was still quite young.
