At this moment, Yelai felt his Sequence Power becoming unprecedentedly strong, leaping from Rank Seven to Rank Eight. This was the effect of the Sequence Potion, Black Fairy Tale. It temporarily enhanced the user's Sequence Power.
At that very moment, the shadow that had been trying to catch up to Yelai no longer closed the distance between them; they maintained a certain gap.
"Black Fairy Tale?" A voice emerged from the shadow. Perhaps realizing that a surprise attack had failed and that it couldn't catch up to Yelai in such a short time, the rapidly moving shadow burst out of the villa. Under the moonlight, a pitch-black figure emerged from the darkness.
He was entirely shrouded in black, faceless except for a pair of eerie eyes that were exposed. Rather than being human, he resembled a shadow.
What a sinister fellow. Upon recognizing that Yelai had consumed Black Fairy Tale, the Shadow Person's eyes widened in surprise. As a Sequencer, it was nearly impossible not to know about the effects of this Sequence Potion. While it did enhance one's Sequence, it was akin to a slow death; once the potion's effects wore off, death was almost guaranteed.
The Shadow Person couldn't help but wonder if he should just back off since Yelai would die soon anyway. After some thought, he decided to continue pursuing him. Better safe than sorry; what if Yelai didn't die from Black Fairy Tale? He would lose his assassination reward.
While the Shadow Person contemplated this, Yelai was also on the move, bursting out of the villa. The space inside was too cramped; his opponent had taken full advantage of the peculiar Sequence Power and occupied the terrain. Yelai couldn't afford to confront him within the villa.
Thus, with one chasing and the other fleeing, Yelai dashed out of the villa and ran at full speed. During this time...
Yelai contemplated whether to head to the Outpost to seek help from Leisha and the others, but he quickly dismissed the idea. The most formidable Sequencer in the Numbered Protection Zone was Rank Seven. Seeking their assistance would only lead to more casualties.
As for relying on the effects of Black Fairy Tale to enhance his strength and kill him, Yelai had already attempted that. He abruptly halted mid-run, catching his opponent off guard as he launched a counterattack.
The Shadow Person seemed to anticipate this, immediately slipping into the shadows. Yelai's attack missed, and he realized that the Shadow Person was aware of his movements, choosing to hide in the shadows rather than engage him directly. It was clear that the Shadow Person intended to buy time, waiting for the effects of Black Fairy Tale to wear off until Yelai succumbed to its side effects before revealing himself.
Yelai discerned the Shadow Person's intentions and opted to continue running, trying to create distance while experimenting with various methods to deal with him. He headed toward an open mountainous area, reasoning that without cover, there would be no shadows for the Shadow Person to use.
Unfortunately, as a Rank Eight Sequencer, the Shadow Person was well aware of his own limitations. He pulled out a handful of glowing orbs the size of glass balls and tossed them into the forest. Under their shimmering light, the open area became filled with mottled shadows cast by the orbs, allowing the Shadow Person to blend in effortlessly.
What should have been an advantageous position for Yelai quickly turned into a disadvantage. Shadows danced everywhere from the glowing orbs, and the Shadow Person moved among them, poised to strike Yelai with a lethal blow at any moment. Before Yelai could react, he felt the tension in the air shift as danger loomed closer.
