"Are you heading back now?" Leisha asked.
"Yes, I want to return as soon as possible," Yelai replied casually. He was eager to finish the mission and collect his reward.
Leisha nodded. "I'll drive you back to the Safe Zone. I'll call them when we get there to have them activate the Transmission Altar."
Soon after, Yelai was driven back to the Numbered Protection Zone at the fastest speed possible. Although the Numbered Protection Zone was the Li Family Stronghold and they had sent someone to assassinate him, it wasn't solely under their control. With so many people around, the Li Family wouldn't be able to kill him easily in broad daylight.
A Light Vortex appeared.
Without hesitation, Yelai stepped into it.
At the Numbered Protection Zone, at the Sequence Defender Base, there was a Transmission Altar specifically for Sequencers.
Hmm? Why are there still people teleporting at this hour?
The Transmission Altar emitted a Light Vortex, which was quickly noticed by two Sequencers on patrol for Security.
Upon recognizing the newcomer, one of them exclaimed, "Hey, isn't he Luo Zhenxue's boyfriend? Back so soon?"
News about the male Sequencer joining the Eighth Squad had already spread throughout the Numbered Protection Zone, and they were both aware that Yelai had taken on a task involving Bloody Mary's blood as Sequence material.
As they recognized Yelai, they instinctively thought he had returned in a hurry. After all, he had only been gone for less than half a day; returning at such an odd hour raised suspicions, especially since Bloody Mary was notoriously difficult to deal with. It made one wonder if Yelai had been hunting her or if he was simply afraid and ran back overnight.
Just as that thought crossed their minds, something caught their attention.
Wait, what is that in his hands?
The older of the two Sequencers caught a glimpse of Yelai rushing past him, holding a bucket filled to the brim with red liquid.
The other Sequencer spoke up as well. As Yelai walked by, he caught a whiff of something in the air that made his nose twitch.
The smell of blood was thick in the air.
Both of them suddenly shuddered, exchanging a glance that revealed their mutual shock. Could it be that the larger Sequencer was in danger?
Though the thought remained unspoken, the Sequencer beside her understood what was on her mind. Before she could finish her sentence, he interjected, "No way."
In that moment, they couldn't help but look at each other, both comprehending the meaning in each other's eyes. This was happening too fast! And there were so many of them?!
Ding ding ding.
Xianya's phone rang.
Who is calling at this hour? Can't anyone let people sleep?
Yezi, who shared a room with Xianya, was jolted awake and grumpy. Xianya also stirred from her sleep. She grabbed her phone from the bedside and took a look.
In an instant, she shot up in shock: It’s Yelai!
As she hurriedly answered the call, Yezi, who had been grumpy just moments ago, was now wide awake upon realizing it was Yelai calling.
Just like the two previous Sequencers, it was hard for them to think of anything good when Yelai called at this hour.
"Xianya, what's wrong with Ye Lai? Why is she calling at this time?" Yezi asked anxiously.
She noticed Xianya's expressions changing as she spoke with Yelai—sometimes her brow relaxed, other times her gaze turned sharp, and occasionally her forehead furrowed as if she could crush a fly.
Before long, Xianya concluded the call. "Okay, I'm coming over right now. Wait for me at the Sequence Association."
