At that moment, a commotion erupted from the crowd not far away.
"Tiger Brother, please, take this bag of rice away. We really have nothing left to eat," pleaded a man in his thirties, tugging at Sun Hu's sleeve with an incredibly humble tone.
"What do I care if you have food or not? Let go!" Sun Hu shouted back without any courtesy. When he saw the man still gripping his sleeve, Sun Hu grew impatient and swung his fist, striking the man's face.
The force of Sun Hu's punch was tremendous, directly knocking out one of the man's front teeth and sending him sprawling to the ground. Sun Hu cast a disdainful glance at the man, grabbed the half bag of rice he had just taken from him, and turned to leave.
However, after taking just a couple of steps, he felt someone grab his pant leg. Looking down, he realized it was the same man again.
"Tiger Brother, my mother is seriously ill. If she doesn't eat something, she won't last another two days. Please have mercy and let me keep some of that rice," the man begged.
Sun Hu furrowed his brow; he hadn't expected the man to dare continue bothering him. It seemed he would have to teach him a lesson today. He grabbed the man's collar with his left hand and raised his right fist to strike.
Just then, Wang Fugui suddenly stepped between them with a friendly smile, pulling them apart.
"Xiao Kuai, it's just half a bag of rice. If he wants it, let him take it. There's no need to fight over something so trivial," he said to the beaten man. Then turning to Sun Hu with a smile, he added, "Sun Hu, calm down. We're all from the same village; there's no need to ruin our harmony over this."
Sun Hu looked at Wang Fugui without saying a word. From Wang Fugui's earlier remarks, it seemed he wasn't planning on making Sun Hu return the bag of rice. With that in mind, Sun Hu decided it wouldn't be unreasonable to let the man off this time.
"Hmph, I'll spare you today for Director Wang's sake. But if you dare pull this again next time, I'll smash your head in." With that warning, Sun Hu released his grip on the man's collar, causing him to slump down as if all strength had drained from his body.
As Sun Hu turned to leave, Wang Fugui cheerfully approached him. "Sun Hu, come with me for a moment."
Seeing Wang Fugui beckoning him over, Sun Hu followed alongside him toward the tent where Wang Fugui lived.
"Director Wang, you’re not thinking of making me return that bag of rice, are you?" Sun Hu asked coldly while glancing sideways at Wang Fugui.
Under normal circumstances, Sun Hu would have given Wang Fugui some face.
No matter what, Wang Fugui was the Village Committee Director of Dragon Ridge Village, wielding considerable power in the village, and his family had a certain background in the area. A strong dragon does not suppress a local snake; usually, Sun Hu would never provoke Wang Fugui.
However, the situation was different now. Everyone was trapped on Dragon Ridge Mountain, and food supplies were running low. Sun Hu couldn't afford to starve to death by not seizing someone else's food. He no longer cared about the title of Village Committee Director; if Wang Fugui dared to demand that he return the food, Sun Hu would not hesitate to take action against him.
"Ha! Return it? I've always found that dog to be unpleasant. If you take his food, I’d be more than happy!" A cunning glint sparkled in Wang Fugui's eyes as a sinister smile crept across his lips.
"Hahaha!" Hearing Wang Fugui say this, Sun Hu laughed heartily.
It seemed that Wang Fugui, the Village Committee Director, was on his side. With this support, he could act even more recklessly in the village; after all, who could stop him from taking whatever he wanted?
