Wang Fugui walked down the slope of South Mountain, and before long, he reached the foot of the mountain. From a distance, he could see a few cars parked below, along with a flat, straight road ahead. The terrain here at South was higher than that in the north, and the concentration of toxic gas was evidently lower than at the foot of the northern mountain. 0

If the toxic gas in the north was like an ocean, engulfing the entire village, then the gas at South resembled autumn haze, casting a light yellow veil over the scenery below. With this level of toxicity, there might still be a chance. Once they got into a car and drove south along this road, they could find a new place to live in the city. 0

After observing for a while longer, Wang Fugui turned around and made his way to the clearing at the top of the mountain. About two hours later, the forty or so villagers gradually returned to Wang Fugui's side. He counted the gas masks he had managed to gather—there were ten in total. However, many of these masks were misshapen and could not fit snugly on their faces. A few others had very little activated carbon left inside and could not function properly for filtration. 0

After discarding those unfit for use, only nine masks remained. Wang Fugui sighed and slowly addressed the villagers: "It seems we will have to stay on this mountain for a few more days. Once those newcomers throw their masks here, we should be able to gather enough—forty in total. Only when everyone has a mask can we head down." 0

A week passed, and by the evening of the nineteenth day of the month, they finally collected enough gas masks. During this time, Wang Fugui also instructed the villagers to scavenge car keys from the deceased Outsiders; they managed to gather more than ten keys in total. He planned to have everyone press their car keys once they reached the bottom of the mountain; surely many car doors would unlock. 0

They didn’t need each person to drive their own car since each vehicle could accommodate six or seven people. They only needed to unlock at least seven cars to fit everyone. After some time, they packed their belongings and decided to set off early in the morning when dawn broke. 0

Wang Fugui was ready to leave immediately; however, it was already quite dark outside, making it difficult to see the road below. He felt concerned that if they descended now, they might get lost in the toxic gas. After hearing this, the forty villagers nodded in agreement and returned to their tents to prepare for what they would take down with them in the morning. 0

Once they finished packing, they settled down early in their tents to rest. 0

At ten o'clock in the evening, the sky suddenly began to drizzle. 0

At first, the rain was light, with tiny droplets falling sporadically. 0

Soon, however, the rain intensified, and heavy drops poured down from the sky, enveloping Dragon Ridge Mountain in a curtain of rain. 0

Many of the Outsiders to the north of the open area had not set up their tents. 0

Now, they were simply lying on the ground with their clothes spread out beneath them. 0

As the rain grew heavier, these individuals quickly became drenched. 0

To their horror, they discovered that their skin felt a burning sensation from the rainwater. 0

The raindrops that seeped into their eyes caused an unbearable irritation. 0

This was bad; the rainwater was toxic! 0

A young man covered his eyes and shouted loudly to his companions nearby. 0
